COOLPIX P1000 Firmware v1.6 released 2022/04/26

Thanks for the heads up. I've upgraded to v1.6 & also upgraded NX Studio. Both seem to be functioning well. This scissor-tailed flycatcher photo was taken after revising both.

Good. I haven't updated P1000 firmware. Can you tell any difference the new version makes?

Camera operates the same as before; no real difference that I can tell.

I've never have any problem in updating firmware of every camera, EVER! P1000 from the first version to this one, the same.

Now when I put the prepared card (SanDisk Extreme Pro 16G) in the camera, nothing happens. Of course I tried different cards, repeated the entire upgrading process several times, the same problem.

I gave up, I think I'll wait for the next firmware version :(

If you have any ideas, thank you very much for sharing them here,

All the best,

Augustin

To help you, my friend, I just upgraded my P1000's firmware to v1.6. Succeeded.

I hesitate to do firmware upgrades for all electronics because I had a firmware upgrade accident for an old laptop that bricked it.

But to help you, I just upgraded and below are my steps. But I strongly recommend that you search YouTube for [ p1000 firmware ] and use a video tutorial which will be much more intuitive. The first video result looks good enough.
  1. Run the downloaded "F-P1000-V16W.exe" on my hard drive. It should produce a "P1000Update" folder in the same folder as the just executed "F-P1000-V16W.exe".
  2. In the "P1000Update" folder, there is a "firmware" folder. Copy this "firmware" folder to the root directory of your SD card. Remember not to copy the "P1000Update" folder!
  3. Insert the SD card into your P1000 and start your P1000. Press the MENU button and choose the Wrench menu icon (the last icon on the left side), and then choose "Firmware version" on the right side. You should see a question asking if you want to upgrade from the current version to v1.6. Choose Yes.
  4. Wait until the upgrade is completed and turn off the camera.
  5. Restart the camera. Go to "Firmware version" again to confirm the current firmware version is indeed 1.6 now. Then, delete the "firmware" folder on the SD card using your computer; or, if you want to delete all photos on the SD card too, just format the SD card in your camera.

Thank you very much, my friend, for your quick answer and help!

That's EXACTLY the problem: at point 3, when I'm inserting the prepared card (formatted, with the "firmware.bin" file copied at the root level), nothing happens, just saying "Version 1.5" and nothing else, like it wasn't a card for upgrading!

I repeat, I've made quite a lot of firmware upgrades and NEVER got this :(

All the best and happy shooting,

Augustin

Make sure "firmware" is a folder, not a file. There is a single file "firmware.bin" in it.

According to 7-Zip (a free compression/decompression tool which also shows a file's checksums):
  • firmware.bin's SHA-256 checksum is 91F5976E137D7F78AFEB525D16B28555EFE1BD2A964C5BAD0898299C38CDB44B;
  • The firmware folder's "data" SHA-256 checksum is 91F5976E137D7F78AFEB525D16B28555EFE1BD2A964C5BAD0898299C38CDB44B (same as firmware.bin's SHA-256 checksum);
  • The firmware folder's "data and filename" SHA-256 checksum is 1059254220E2F44AC823165401021380B6A60E1C90663E505D39037EB554BF5A.

Also, make sure you formatted the SD card with a filesystem format recognizable by the P1000. The best way is to format it in the P1000.

At least you have a working firmware version: 1.5. Did you use the same SD card for previous firmware upgrades?
All the best and happy shooting,

While there indeed are Google search results showing a "16GB" version of the SanDisk Extreme Pro, it's quite old a card and I do recommend a new card. "8GB" and "16GB" usually belong to entry-level, slow cards like the SanDisk Ultra. The SanDisk Extreme Pro should start at 64GB.

I'm using a 128GB Kingston Canvas Go! Plus 170MB/s (blue) card. In China it's way cheaper than a SanDisk Extreme Pro card at the same reading speed (170MB/s) and memory capacity.

If 7-Zip shows the same SHA-256 checksum for firmware.bin on your SD card as I said (91F5976E137D7F78AFEB525D16B28555EFE1BD2A964C5BAD0898299C38CDB44B), and you did put firmware.bin in a "firmware" folder (all lowercase) in the SD card's root directory, I don't know where the problem is.
All the best,

Augustin

I've formatted the card into the camera; I'm always making like that when upgrading.

Yes, there isn't a hurry to upgrade, just the incident is pestering me.

All the best,

Augustin

You're quite right, my friend, but I've tried the upgrade with a brand new Lexar card also.

All the best,

Augustin
Then make sure:
  1. You have the right folder/file structure on your SD card: In the root directory there should be a "firmware" folder, and in the "firmware" folder there should be a single file "firmware.bin".
  2. firmware.bin's SHA-256 checksum should be 91F5976E137D7F78AFEB525D16B28555EFE1BD2A964C5BAD0898299C38CDB44B. You can view a file's SHA-256 checksum by installing 7-Zip and then right-clicking that file in Windows Explorer and choosing "CRC SHA" and then choosing "SHA-256".

Maybe that's the problem?

The instructions say:
"Note: Be sure to copy the “firmware” folder to the root (top-most) directory of the memory card. The camera will not recognize the new firmware if it is placed in a folder under the root directory.

Yes, that must be the case. Initially he said "with the 'firmware' file copied at the root level" and then changed it to "with the 'firmware.bin' file copied at the root level", as evidenced by quotes in my two replies here and here.
The instructions say:
"Note: Be sure to copy the “firmware” folder to the root (top-most) directory of the memory card. The camera will not recognize the new firmware if it is placed in a folder under the root directory.

Yes, that was the problem!

I was a complete idiot, copying the file and not the folder!

Sorry for making so much trouble to you all!

Thank you very much and all the best!
