Are pros using MAC or PC continued...

Like driving cars. I just adjust. I feel the Mac/PC thing is a little over rated. I truly use both and both have their bad and good points. I've seen many Mac only users get lost with Pcs. That shoudn't happen at all. PC users seem to just stay away from Macs like it's just not for them and for no other reason either. Isn't there a difference between OS10 and OS9? Little things like built in Print window; gone (some like me print directories all the time). There are softwares that work faster on PC some faster on Mac. If you've never used both you can't tell the difference, but you get the same job done anyway. Mac come with built in stuff but a PC with the same features installed by owner can still be cheaper and sometimes faster.

I think people need to just feel right on both because soon or late there is a need for that.

What about monitors? As a photographer, I would put more money on a good monitor than a fancy machine that look impressive. Both Mac or PC will do the job today, a bad monitor just won't.

For photography and graphic work, Mac is superior I believe, but a user that does not do much work with Fonts and postscript code can make both work for him. Most likely, a professionnal will need a PC for all his paperwork and a Mac for his images......

... it's just a tool and both sometimes suck and sometimes shine.

If I had started out with a Mac 18 years ago I might still use one. It was an ATARI though ... ;-)

The most ludicrous thing one could say is to say that mac users out
number pc users...in any forum...

Check the numbers of pc sales to mac...check out who is using mac
or pc on this very forum...

Heck...lets do an informal survey right now...

Who is using mac compared to pc...

Anyone who responds to this post put PC or MAC at the begining of
you subject line...

Not scientific but telling...

I was one of those people who used to say Mac's suck, then I went to school for Graphic Design/Photography and started using them. After using them and getting used to them I saw why there are MacAddicts. I have used them for 5 years now and will never go back. Being in the profession I am in I laugh when I hear the question which platform do pro's use. Pro's use what best fits their needs. PC is used for Web a bit more from what I have seen because that is what the majority of your target audience is going to be viewing your work on but the Mac is dominant in the Design/Photo buisiness as a whole. I am talking about Pro Design not "I do design work where I work so my company can save money". I am NOT saying there is anything wrong with people who do that.

Go to this site and get the free CD if they have any left and see what the majority or maybe all of the pro on the CD are using.

P.S. I will get a PC in the future for web work because of testing for browsers and the Gamma difference.

Initially, Mac spawned the GUI interface.
Not strictly true. While the Mac certainly popularized the concept of the GUI, it didn't invent it. The GUI of the Macintosh has its roots in the work done by the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) on the "Star" system.

Apple initially adopted these GUI ideas into the "Lisa" computer, which came out a year before the Mac, but which never really caught on because of it's astronomical pricing ($10k).

It's worth noting that Microsoft was making visits to Xerox PARC at roughly the same time as Apple. In fact, if it had made the orginal ship date, the first version of MS Windows would have come out at about the same time as the release of the Macintosh.

Now, I think most people would agree that the early Macintosh was a far more elegant implementation than the early versions of Windows, but the basic underlying GUI concepts were pretty similar, and in general they had their origin on the Xerox Star.
As a consequence, apps
such as Photoshop and Illustrator were written to compliment the
Mac system.
While the elegent GUI of the Mac was certainly a factor, this really has far more to do with the fact that Apple was Adobe's #1 customer and partner for many years.

John Warnock worked at the aforementioned Xerox PARC, where they created a page description language to control Xerox laser printers. He and his boss Chuck Geschke tried for quite awhile to convince Xerox to make a commercial product out of the idea, but never succeeded. Ultimately they decided to quit and form a company of their own to do such a project.

This company, of course, was Adobe. While the Macintosh was still in infancy, Apple decided to create the LaserWriter laser printer and incorporate Adobe's new "PostScript" language into it. They invested a few million $$$ in Adobe to make it happen. That project turned Adobe from a struggling startup into a successful company. As a result, there was a very close partnership between Apple and Adobe for many, many years.

Illustrator was spawned out of the partnership between Apple and Adobe. Illustrator was created to be, in effect, a Postscript drawing program. It was realistically more tied to the LaserWriter for output than it was the Mac for the GUI. The capabilities of the program closely mirrored what could be done efficiently with Postscript's vector graphics and Bezier curves. Illustrator artwork printed quickly and at high quality on Postscript printers, as compared with MacPaint bitmaps, which printed exactly like you'd expect out of a 72dpi bitmap.

And as regards Photoshop, this program did not even originate at Adobe. The first early versions of the program had actually been self-published by Thomas Knoll and his brother, and was included as the software bundled with the "BarneyScan" slide scanner. Then it came to Adobe's attention. They licensed it from the Knolls, gave it a significant overhaul, and released "Photoshop 1.0" about a year later.

The Jenoptik eyelike Precision MF backs are Mac only also. For those of you who don't know it these are $8,000 to $20,000 pieces of equipment, not amature stuff. If more Pro's used PC then why would this Pro equipment dealer and the other discussed in the message below not support them? All of the MF back Pro equipment dealers support Mac but not all of them support Windows.
Talking about backs, Leaf still doesn't have PC support....although
they say it's coming.

You might wanna check the numbers yourself Rob. Apple sells more computers than any other company. While Apple leads almost all media fields, they are especially dominant when it comes to professional photography. Although, I'm sure there are many times more Windows users taking pictures of their rug and backyard.

IMO most Mac-niacs own these ( perfectly honest computers) only because they have been instructed to do so (a trend). Sorta Microcosm phenomenon where everybody has to dress the same. PC do a great job as well period.

I have no beef with PC's they can work fine if thats what you want to use. I started with Windows and started using Macs when I went to school for Graphic Design/Photography. When I started college I was 27 so I had plenty of time with PCs. I actually had my doubts when I started using Macs because I WAS one of those people who said Macs suck out of ignorance. After using Macs long enough to get used to them I loved them. I have heard this idea before that people in these industries just use Macs because they think they have to or are brainwashed in school or something and was even told in a post that I liked Macs because thats what I started on in school. The truth as I said is that I had plenty of experience with PCs before school. The reason that people in these professions like Macs is we really love using them. We are not three year olds, if we didn't want to use them we wouldn't. I have used both PCs and Macs and have made the informed decision to use Macs. And I am a MacAddict because the user experience is great. In fact using Macs has made me into a computer geek. It is kind of condisending to say the least, to say I use a computer because I was instructed to do so. Have you used a Mac for any period of time? The truth is we Love using them, its not a punishment.

I've got and use both as well.

However, I don't agree that users get lost in a PC. For photoshop, both Mac and PC share the same menu system, options, layout etc. It's almost identical.

In my experience, Mac is significantly slower than PC. I see so much of the rotating beach ball while executing many of the actions in Photoshop. On a PC, it's almost instantaneous. There's no contest when it comes to speed. This applies to the G4 and dual G4 series.

The G5 is supposed to be faster. However, my photoshop isn't optimised for a G5 cpu. It's not gonna be any faster than a G4 unless I splash out more for new software.

Where the Mac does win is stability. I've not rebooted my Mac for over 2 months now. It's on 24/7. MacOS X is just simply wonderful. PCs can never beat that. :)
