My Experience with Neo and power lines

Similarly to others, I find that removal of power lines is not so great. A before and after is below. A close look at the 'after' shows lots of lines in front of very light backgrounds - you would think that even a stupid AI would be able to recognize the continuation of a power line against that kind of background.

Basically Neo does some of the work but a lot of cleanup afterwards is needed.

Have you tried running the after version through Neo?

I downloaded your jpeg from the gallery and ran it through Luminar Neo 1.0.2 and it did a pretty good job. Not sure why. M1 iMac. What machine are you using?

The image was not retouched in any way. This is a one-button Remove Powerlines and export to jpeg,

That's very interesting. I ran the 'after' through one more time and it got about as good as your first try -- but there are still lots of power lines in front of the yellow building in both of ours. And there are a lot of twiggy bits and small errors that need to be cleaned up.

I just downloaded Neo yesterday and am not used to the interface. Can't figure how to tell what version I have. My machine is a Windows 10 that is not up to any of the Topaz AI programs but they usually fail, and Neo did finish the job.

Looking at the Task Manager I see Neo has eaten up all the RAM and other programs are stuck. Not good.

Yes, in front of buildings is a challenge. Hopefully, the Ai will improve over time.

Maybe it works best on M1 because of higher processing power, possibly use of the neural engine. Anyway if this was 1-click it's a lot easier than my cellphone app, Touch Retouch.

I am fond of Luminar products. As they are based in Ukraine they have larger priorities at the moment than power line removal.

In my experience Neo does a good job with power lines against the sky or other large uniform backgrounds, but those are easy to do manually. As the first example shows it is unreliable/unusable in more complex situations and I have tried dozens of images. As such, and again I like and use Luminar products almost daily, this is a feature that was not ready for release, but Neo itself is kind of still a beta.

In my experience, and it has zilch to do with M1 or AI routines in CPUs, running a few images a second time through Neo may lead to some improvement but for images that Neo could not handle the first time it does nothing of great value on the second pass. If using Neo as a plugin that requires a second call out from the master program, eg Photoshop. The power line removal button greys out once it is clicked.

In my example using the same photo as OP I ran it once and posted the result. I have no idea why it worked for me and not OP. I assume OP was using 1.0.2.

At the same time, I have tried on other similar images and did not get good results. It is hard to know because I have no clue as to what the software is doing.

I tried your image on the new beta Remove Distractions feature. No additional edits, just one click:

Photoshop Beta 25.13 using mac Studo with M2 Max.
Photoshop Beta 25.13 using mac Studo with M2 Max.

It really messed-up the tower on left. Luminar Neo did a better job 2 years ago. No doubt Adobe will improve this before it moves to release in the regular PS.

For some tips on how to make this work better:

The photo was taken in St Petersburg0 and Neo’s customers probably used it many times to remove the wires. So may be using memory to remove the wires. I have the same photo which I took in 2001, and my Lightroom mobile on iPad m2 2024 was struggling to remove using their AI removal tool. There were fewer wires going across the dome, In the end I left as it was because the fewer wires were less distracting than your original photo.

I too took that same photo as well as many more in St Petersburg. Although I have no problem with people who want to clean up the occasional wire, and have done it myself, taking the wires out of a picture like this is beyond "cleaning up". It creates a completely unreal photo. It's what the chamber of commerce would do.

You want to experience the real St Petersburg, you gotta live with the wires.

ChuckB, I was commenting on your March 2022 post where you were testing Luminar Neo's new (at the time) powerline removal tool. I found at the time I got a better result than you did.

Now two years later I was comparing the 2022 Luminar Neo result with the BETA Distraction removal tool in PS Beta 25.13.

That is all. Not commenting on the aesthetic quality of line removal in general, jut how effective, or not, the tools are.

The video shows a quick way to exclude the tower. Nice tool..

Sorry if I gave the impression I was criticizing. Not at all. In fact I forgot I was the OP (it's been two years). But it is possible to both be interested in the tech of wire removal, and realize that sometimes tech is not the answer for me. So I went 'off topic'.

And thanks for the demo. I have not yet opened the beta but you've intrigued me.

yes, the video is very helpful; however, in this case I was testing the ONE-click result from the Beta PS tool compared to the ONE-click result I got back in 2022 with Neo 1.0.2.

Given Adobe's resources and talent I have no doubt the tool will improve for general release and beyond.
