R5 has had a freezing problem that Canon hasn't been able to fix

Do you use the AF-On button to focus or the shutter button?
I have multiple back buttons set up for different focus modes, I never use the shutter to focus.

Me too. I use the * button in C1-3 modes for pre focus before I use the AF-On for Face/Eye AF - if needed. One is set for Single Point, the other for Expansion AF and Zone AF.

I had a freeze/lock-up about once a month since getting the R5 (Aug 2020). Manageable. Not too bad. Then upgraded the firmware to v.1.5.0 when it was released. Immediately experienced many more freezes/lock-ups.

Reverted to v1.4.0 after a few weeks of using v1.5.0 (couldn't take it any more), and have had ZERO freezes/lock-ups for several tens of thousands of shots since.

Decided to give v1.5.1 a try today (first warm sunny day for birding here! :-D ). Had a lock-up within the very first hour of shooting (had to pull batt). Dang!

Going to try my other CFe card (both are Sony Tough). All batts are LP-E6NH. Using primarily the100-500 w/1.4x and back button AF.

We'll see what happens. Wish me luck!

I don't think it has anything to do with cards. It is an AI-Servo, back button focus problem. Or that is what the Canon CPS tech guy told me today when I was chatting with him about another problem on my R5. I happened to mention that I had been having the freeze-ups with FW 1.5.0 and reverted to 1.4 and they went away. My experience was that I got freeze-ups with R5 + BBAF + Animal Eye Focus + AI Servo + RF 100-500 + FW 1.5.0 with multiple cards (both CFExpress and SD) and not at all with the R6 and all the same other factors.

the same here. Btw. I have new mainboard, RF 100-500, bbf. I am quite quick in "remove battery and return" Canon challenge.

I've had my R5 now since December of 2020. I use a Sigma 14-24 f2.8 Art and Sigma 105 f1.4 Art along with RF 24-70 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8 and 100-500 as well as a 24-240. Not once have I had a freeze up. I've used electronic shutter a number of times, mechanical shutter at speed as well as single shots doing wedding and such. I use the Sony Pro 128gb card and most often 2 Neewer batteries in my grip as well. Not once was there ever a burp or freeze at all.

Not saying to rub it in, but I never used BBF. My back focus button is assigned to set to the 1.6x crop mode, my * button to turn Servo on and off and I left the other alone. My eye autofocus took over the depth of field button in front. All is good on my end. I updated ALL firmware from the original day they came out. Never a glitch. Guess my camera was made on a Wednesday;-)

It is an AI-Servo, back button focus problem.
I beg to differ. I use neither, and I have lockups.
Sorry to hear that. Perhaps you ought to inform Canon.
I believe he has, at least I hope so. I have not had any problems with Freeze ups in the year that I have owned a R5. I have only tried BBF once and found I prefer using the shutter button. Old habits die hard.

From what I have found CWaterston seems to be the only person who is having lockup issues using the shutter button. If others are having R5 freeze issues when using the shutter button for AF I hope they will report the issue in the freeze threads and on the Canon site.

This was nearly exactly my setup when I had the most issues, just replace the 100-500 with the EF 500 f/4ii and the firmware with 1.5.1. I guess I'll have to try weaning myself off of BBF for a while until they fix it.

Well I went out again this afternoon (with a different CFe card) and experienced another freeze (15 second black-out, then restored).

Not looking good. AF is working well though.

When I updated to 1.5 my camera would freeze up quite regularly. When I updated I had the 100-500 lens on and in M mode. After going back to 1.4 no more freeze ups. I decided I would update to 1.5 again this time I left the lens off and used P mode. I then updated the 100-500 I have been using for 3 weeks thousands of photos and not one freeze. I use BBF and no problem now. I am so impressed with the autofocus now I will not be updating anymore firmware. Just my experience.

Thx. I just now reloaded firmware v1.5.1 over the existing v1.5.1 (this time I used an SDXC card for the load). I follow the instructions to the letter each time. My 100-500 (and 1.4x) have been up to date (not an issue).

One of my theories (from anecdotal evidence) is that a reload of the firmware might help. So I'll see how this goes (won't be able to get out shooting again for a few days tho).

Best of luck with your own cam! Sounds like you hit the jackpot! :-)

Wow, is the new AF firmware out?!

Your link doesn't work for me, but I'll have to check it out! Thanks! :-)

Try this one:

Yes, I am new to the R5, firmware 1.5.2 and I experienced several freezes.

I use AF-ON, adapter and sigma sport most of the time. The freeze happens after an auto focus, take the shot, try to refocus and it freezes. Turning the power off won't help, I need to disconnect/remove the battery for the camera to work again.

A very annoying problem...

I've had my R5 now for a year and a half. Never had a freeze ever. So it must be sporadic indeed. Sorry you picked the wrong one.
