I recall reading in "News" that a new MFT sensor was announced a couple of months back..... but so far there appears to have been no other related news, such as a new camera body that uses this sensor. Does anyone have any indications as to whether or not Olympus and/or Panasonic are actually planning on using the new sensor? Seems strange that so much has been spent on R&D, manufacturing etc without any sign of a product that uses the new sensor

Well there's hints but we don't know for sure until the cameras come out.

Panasonic and OMD should each indicate more about their plans for the next mFTs cameras this month at CP+.

A new sensor (particularly one with some serious improvements) would be a major new feature. Definitely something they want to keep under wraps for the actual announcement. They are boldly calling this a "WOW" camera. So if the wow factor is based on some crazy new capability enabled by the new sensor they wouldn't want to spoil the announcement by revealing that info early.

The new m43 Olympus camera will pretty much have to have the new sensor, and I'm ready for it.

I have had a full frame camera for the first time for a few weeks now and so far the biggest effect it has had on me is to increase my appreciation of the weight, size, image quality, IS, and feel of my Olympus m43 bodies and lenses.

Your gear list certainly plays to the strengths of MFT. Hope you don't mind me asking, but which FF body and what did you expect it to add to your shooting envelope?

I am in the same position - bought a Z5 and a couple of lenses. They are SO HEAVY (yet on the Nikon forum they think they are light).

Andrew--Sony A1 and Tamron 35-150f2-2.8, primarily for great autofocus and for indoor low light sports and kids, plus extensive video features. I've also been shooting some sunrises with crops. It is a great combination, just large and heavy. I'm 73 and healthy, but apparently I'm spoiled by the m43 gear.

I'll probably still have a m43 WOW body in my hands if I make it to 80, but not a FF pro body/lens. I may need the WOW.ii camera body with the "read mind" button instead of a shutter button by then.

Yes, I watched a bunch of videos of folks using the large bodies and lenses and not making a big deal about the size or weight, especially of the lenses. But, since I rented first, I knew what I was getting in to, and my new FF gear will have its uses, but it won't displace the m43 gear, that's all. I won't be traveling or hiking with the Sony/Tamron.

I'm looking forward to the new Panasonic as well, not ignoring it at all. It's all good for m43, regardless of which manufacturer introduces the new bodies.

OM Systems is still pretty mum about the subject.

Meanwhile, Panasonic have already announced the next camera will be the GH6 with a new sensor. No details yet (expected shortly though):

I have an A7R4 but that lens would be too heavy for me. Great kit but pricey.

My wife used to have a Sony P&S with a read-mind i.Auto mode. When it broke, the update required more input, so now she uses her phone.

I'm really interested in the Wow camera. Will determine my tele lens choices.

why is everyone ignoring the fact that Panasonic will be releasing the GH6 within the next month or two, and it will have a new sensor in it?
You need to post a poll to get a spread of answers.

My personal reasons are to do with preferring Olympus bodies and hoping for Dual IS with Olympus lenses, stills focus with PDAF hybrid CDAF using rapid sensor readout.

I'll look at the GH6 if its less than 600g and reviews well for full electronic shutter. Bit worried about a diffent UI.

I was already impatient in December but I became disappointed by the lack of news and technical specifications. I don't think we are ignoring anything, it is just the lack of information by Panasonic about the GH6. It was delayed, yes, but that is all they can say ? Maybe I am alone in this but I think Panasonic should appreciate their customers a bit more and open up some information. It is almost like Panasonic is ignoring the fact that the GH6 should come out...

Whilst I am sure that the camera will have an incredible feature set . Given { and it is a given :-) } Sony makes the best sensors in every format looking around all the latest and greatest cameras from the various makers. There has been no real jump in image quality at all . I expect the camera will advance on the already comprehensive use of multi image tech etc

Perhaps because we have no idea just what sensor it would use? The 5.7k video doesn’t really map to any known sensor, so it’s difficult to really get a good froth at the mouth going. Is it some upscale from IMX472? Downscale from a IMX492 derivative? Something other? Postponed to when?

The new OMDS camera is both more open for speculation since no performance info has been released, and a bit easier to speculate about since we can riff off known new sensor options.

that Sony A1+ Tamron 35-150f2-2.8 setup is pretty extreme though.

I think it will easily outperform even a very expensive complete Oly PRO prime kit (17f1.2, 25f1.2, 45f1.2, 75f1.8)
So theres quite some room to downscale body + lens to save money, size and weight.

Look at Joe’s gear list!

The 16mp sensor was fine.
