How to condense ~90 Kodak carousel tray boxes

I've collected approximately 90 boxes of Kodak carousel trays from a deceased. They take up quite a bit of physical space...I don't even have a projector or plan on projecting them currently.

As I scan the slides, I'd like to transfer them to alternate storage. Assuming each box is full I need space for ~13,000 slides. I've come across some boxes, largest being a bit over 2000 slides but seemingly astronomical pricing at ~$50 a box.

Has anyone used or come across good solutions that aren't as costly?

Wow. I have a few older Logan ones. Can't believe how expensive all that is now.

I'm sure some good ideas will appear.

I've moved my framed slides from trays to binders similar to the ones Overrank linked to, but I dont have 13000 slides. Those are very convenient, but expensive and not that compact compared to storing the slides in boxes. I dont have any recommendation for boxes, but unless you consider the slides extremely valuable I wouldn't be too concerned about the quality. It's probably more important how you store the boxes than exactly which boxes you use.

As you scan (particularly if you're new to it) you'll most likely get better at scanning the difficult ones with practice. When you're done you might be interested in rescanning some of the interesting ones so make a system where you'll easily be able to find a slide again in your boxes.

Probably worth adding that they trays themselves seem to make around £5 on eBay, so that would be around £450 ($600) is you have 90 and sold them all separately, which would offset some of the cost of storage.

Thats an interesting point, I had not considered the trays having value.

But bulky to ship.
They seem to be £5 + £3 shipping, so I suspect in the UK they can go as the smallest parcel size.

Piecing out 90 trays is a job in itself mind, but a pack of the slide envelopes would hold 3 1/2 trays worth (assuming 13000/90 = 144 per tray) and cost slightly less than you could sell three trays for. Plus you’d get a bulk discount on the envelopes, but you would need some binders too. So it could be self financing

When I checked ebay for prices. Yes the prices asked are as you claim. But also none of the listings had any bids on them. Just because you ask for a price doesn't mean anyone will buy them.

By the way, I have quite a few Leitz and Agfa German style slide trays that I would like to get rid of. So far no one is interested in them. Haven't even been able to give them away.

A good way to condense is to do what I have done. Throw out most of the slides that are not worth saving. That will save you quite a bit of space.

I'll bet that there are no more than 2,000 of those slides that are worth saving. Throw the ones that are not worth keeping. That will allow you to condense quite a bit.

………...
I tried to give away some Kodak trays on a Norwegian photo group. Nobody was interested, but Kodak projectors where never that popular in Norway so it could be easier in the US and other countries.

Those were sold prices, I only ever use sold prices for that reason.

There we’re 60 Kodak Carousel slide trays sold on UK eBay in the last 3 months. I believe slide projectors are having a bit of a renaissance

Selling them individually is a lot of work but it’s the only way to get a decent return off them

So about $300-$350 for the whole thing.

26 packages of these would cost less:

30-40% price reduction right now, snagged enough sheets to put this collection into binders. When I'd last looked at sheets the cost was higher than boxes.

You also have to be careful with sheets that the plastic doesn't contact the film emulsion. No easy solution, they all seem pretty expensive.
