Anyone bought the Canon R5 from Panamoz yet

My big concern is the vat issue and bringing it back into the country when returning from a vacation. I have never seen any reports regarding poor service though.
Have you ever been asked before? I've never been asked in 30 years of regular air travel. I suppose that if the camera or lens was in the manufacturers box then that might be a different matter, however I don't tend to travel with them packed in their boxes!

I spoke to my local Canon authorised repair centre about Panamoz before I bought a 5DIV, they said that they deal with Panamoz every now and again and have had no problems.

Absolutely agree - as long as you aren't bringing them through new in the box this will never happen, surely?

That is the question, I have only taken my camera once and it was obviously not new so I don't have extensive experience. But I have seen this being used as a reason not to buy grey import cameras and lenses so I am keen to understand if there is an validity in this statement.

I have just sent for a R5 and 24-105 RF.

I do have qualms about the VAT, but as long as you can provide the receipt, then you will only have to pay the VAT if demanded. On my purchase the VAT at 20% would be £800, so I would still be ahead.

They do say that the VAT is paid. As long as the delivery company don't ask for payment.

If they do I might refuse delivery

Its quite simple, if you really want/need a proper VAT receipt then pay the RRP and buy from a regular UK based supplier.

I use Panamoz, but I did my homework first, no issues and about to buy another RF lens (just because its not in stock in the UK).

Not as simple, I really do not mind paying the VAT, it is just excessive price charged, before VAT in The EU and the UK. This is a market bigger than the US, yet Europeans are dreadfully gouged. In this instant Panamoz assure me that all necessary taxes are paid, I have like you, to take then on trust.

The US price at BH Photo is US 3900. which is UKP 2844 and with 20% VAT is about UKP 3420. This is about UKP 780 more than the UKP 4200 charged in the UK. It is the same product, but for some reason is more expensive in the UK than the US.

Just like everything we buy in the UK, no point comparing our prices to the US, I gave up doing that a few years ago as it just depressed me, whether it be camera kit, top end guitars or guns, we pay over the odds and nothing much we can do about it if we insist on buying the kit from UK sellers.

That is why this is my first major purchase in 6 years. At my time of life, it might be the last I make.

So I am at the point of ordering the R5 with the 24-105lL lens from panamoz. Can anyone tell me whether you need or can register the camera with canon UK to get the firmware updates.

Many thanks

You do not need to register it with canon to get firmware updates just download it from canon website

Prompted by your post, I have just downloaded V 1.3 from Canon UK

Firmware updates shouldn't be an issue.

But can I register the camera to egt the CPS advantages? And the points for the CPS status?

You can register the camera and get the points to build up your levels. However it says

"This is a non-EMEA product and may not be eligible for some services." So I'm not sure what that means.

I have some grey RF lenses too which don't have that message.

Have a look at the documentation that came with the lenses. Do they have a 1 year world wide warranty? Where as I think that camera warranties are according to marketing sector.

Don't know how it is in other countries, but in Germany I get a free cleaning (incl. sensor cleaning) by Canon once a year (incl. micro af adjustment for the lens attached to the body - which they did very well, much better than I could do by myself - but this no longer of relevance obviously). Since I can pass at their facility when going to work I used this. (Otherwise I would have to pay for the shipping and insurance if I want any.)

So I might loose some advantages with a grey product, but with a price difference of 1,000 Euros it's a long way for benefits to sum up to this amount.

Haven't used Panamoz for years but bought my 5D mkIV from HDEW. they were great.

Am considering an R5, am I right in thinking that If I buy from somewhere like HDEW who provide a VAT receipt, then my business is allowed to reclaim the VAT?

I have never heard anything good about Panamoz. However if you are in the UK and happy to buy grey market (as I am), try HDEW. They are 100% reliable, real people you can speak to, and give their own warranty. Prices are usually pretty much unbeatable for a real shop. They have had R5's in stock.

Really? I've not come across any horror stories yet, been using them for a few years now, as have friends, all good so far....
