Favourite walkaround prime on Sony apsc?

Hi everybody,

I just thinking about my walkaround prime and what could be possible replacement. I started on Sony apsc with old Sigma 30f2.8, then switched to Sony 28f2 for faster aperture and finaly got to Sony Zeiss 24f1.8 for wider view, slightly faster aperture and better magnification. I use it for family and travel photography, close-up shots and some occasional landcapes. So far I see no better lens for me in current E-mount lens selection.

What about your favourite prime lens? I mean no specialised one, but the lens which would you bring with you as the only one if you have to. And why this lens?

Thanks for your responces!
I’ll take the Touit anywhere for architecture and landscapes. Superb with the IBIS of A6500.

For environmental portraits I’ll bring the Zeiss 24/1.8.

cheers,

Jose

I'd day I take 90% of my pictures with the 16mm Sigma. I have the 30mm too along with the 18-135 Sony but I love the wide angle and speed of the 16mm.

Lots of love for the 30mm on here though. I might have to mount it up and just go out with that and get some images with it.

The Sigma 16/1.4 certainly has 'something' to it when I pick it up. It is just a bit big to my taste for everyday use.

I've also tried a Chinese 7.5 mm fish eye but that is really limiting as a general purpose option (but it is easy to make selfies of my left hand for some reason).

I own the Sony 50 1.8, the Sony 35 1.8, the Sigma 16 1.4 and the Sigma 56 1.4.

The Sigma 56 is my clear favourite for quality.

But being dissapointed with the kit lense and later buying the Sony 18-135: if it had to be only one and the lightning conditions aren't extremely bad, I would use the 18-135 with OSS.

But the Sigma 56 1.4 is my best lense. I wish Sigma would make a 24 or 28 lense for the same price and with the same IQ as their other primes.

Why not a triad of new premium compact f/2.8 primes for APS-C?

I would be really interested about new apsc Sigma 24mm, my hopes are still alive 😁😁

Why f2.8? On apsc I would like at least f2. Still can be pretty compact.

Yes, something like the Sony 20mm f/2.8 but with better optics. Maybe Sony will update that lens eventually.

I love the Sigma f/1.4 lenses, but I don't always need that much speed. I would gladly purchase a small-form f/2.8 or even f/4 in the 21-24mm range for landscapes while hiking. It wouldn't replace my larger Viltrox 23mm f/1.4, but it would be for a different purpose.

I'm tempted by the Voigtlander Color-Skopar 21mm f/3.5. If it were autofocus I'd probably already own it. Still trying to convince myself that I don't need AF for a landscape lens... which is probably true.

I still have my old 19 and 30 f2.8 Sigmas. There's really no reason they couldn't upgrade them with newer firmware and AF. They're still optically quite good, especially the 30.

+1, but... in pancake or similar format => small and light, fewer groups/elements, less electronics (i could live w/o OSS in 16-24mm primes, iff smaller)

I also still have the Sigma 30/2.8, however, I have not used it at all in the last 2 or 3 years. I much prefer the SZ 24/1.8 or the Sony 35/2.8. But perhaps in the next couple of months I may get the new Sigma 35/2.0 DG-DN. Sounds like a great walk-around lens.

It seems like the Sony FE 28mm f/2 Lens is a very good to excellent lens in the same FOV & aperture that many in this thread has been wishing for, why does it get no love?

BTW, I still own and like my Sigma 30/2.8 and like it very much, I think it is a fantastic lens. Everyone talks about wanting faster AF across the entire field. It has never hindered me from taking very nice, sharp pictures. I took it out last weekend for a few shots, I don't take fast action shots with it, so it works perfectly for my style of shooting.

I also like the colors it gives me on my a6300. All taken handheld, and it is nice to have a built-in flash on my camera. ;)

It was pretty dark, but I did my best.

All taken at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens last weekend.

The last picture was taken with my FE 70-300G lens.

I used FE28 about a year before Zony 24. It's a good lens, just Zony and also close Sigma 30f1.4 are simply better acc. my opinion. But for somebody can be the best from the gang because can be used also on FF.

Sigma 56 1.4

Sharp, compact and it can do all I need it to do for a walkaround lens.

They are pretty similar. At what distance?

I am on my third copy of the 20mm pancake. It is a bit sharper than #2. I am on my fourth copy of the Samyang 24mm--sharper than the previous three.

My Tamron 20mm is sharper than both.
If the Tamron only had AF & Stabalization, it could be something to consider, at that price and size.

BTW, why have you owned three 20mm pancakes, and four Samyang 23mm lenses? Do you buy them, then test them and keep the sharpest one, and continue the process until your are satisfied? Just curious.
I had the same reaction...on his fourth copy of a lens? He certainly has an understanding dealer who lets him audition lenses ad nauseam. Perhaps he is like me, buying a lens, selling it, then deciding I want it again. But I have only done that twice..once for 24-105 and once for A7rII. Crazy.
I think that I figured it out. There are some people who takes pictures of life experiences, and others that take pictures of brick walls and test charts. Then, there are others that collect 116 cameras and lenses (?!), I would call them collectors. There are others who take pictures of life experiences that have galleries to show off their work, because they are proud of it and happy to share them. Those are the people I respect the most, because it shows how well they can shoot with their gear, no matter what kind of gear they have.

Long story short, there are all kinds of people on this forum, and it is interesting to hear their points of views and opinions, no matter where they are coming from, or why they take pictures.

BTW, I've never returned any lens, maybe I've been very lucky since all of my lenses have zero issues, and I like every single one of them. :-)

Why does it have to be a prime? The Sony 16-55G works very well. The Sony Z16-70 also works well. Your results may vary. I say this because I was stuck on the SZ24 1.8 for an everyday lens for about 3 years. I now like zooms, especially very good zooms.

I asked for a prime, because choose of the most favourite focal length is interesting for me. I had some development over the time, so I was curious about others :-)

But your point is valid - why prime? I like smaller lenses and faster lenses, so primes are the best in this, but I would surely try some short fast zoom, like 16-35 f2.8 if somebody will ever make it...

while sharp, at 10oz/300gr. (ditto Sel18-135) the Sigma 56/1.4 remains a classic Sigma: lovely IQ and price, in a larger/heavier package.

But walkaround it ain't mounted on modern a6k body, not for 1/2 day on your feet under the sun, IMHO (unless one's very young/strong/big...)

An a6600 with any f/1.4 lens today is pushing towards 2lb... Would you climb/hike/ski a full day with such a somewhat compact (though arguably heavy) hanging from your neck...?

Compact walkaround prime would be e.g., and a5100 (or nex 5N!) with a 20/2.8, or perhaps even an a6000 w/ kit zoom... iff any of these would be updated for AD2021.

I have been hiking many, many miles with my D7500 and 17-50 on a PD shoulder attachment, and 70-300 on the other strap for accessibility and backpack balance. Aluminum tripod aswell on the back, no carbon :-)

It's true that the lockdowns etc. have made us somewhat weaker, but if I couldn't handle one or two more kilos at age 41 I'd be seriously worried about my overall fitness.

I can understand this issue for an elderly person though, specially these days.

Maybe you just need a better rig to hang you gear, using the included strap on any camera is suicide :-D
