I shoot on a tripod exclusively. It is a heavy duty Gitzo with an Arca Swiss ballhead.

I was using my mkIV and my 5DsR and bracketing indoors for interior shots. Never a problem.

When I got the R I found that I was getting the occasional blurry frame. It was only occurring at 1/5 of a second. No other shutter speed.

At first I thought it was because IBIS was active so I disabled it. No change. Manual focus with the AF switch off and still I get a blurry image that is unusable.

I suspect it is an IBIS issue as the image is offset compared to the sharp images.

Anybody else see this issue? The camera is not usable for me as a lot of my interiors are shot at this speed.

All input appreciated.

That is strange but I blew them up on my monitor and had trouble seeing the issue ckearly. However the others seemed better with better grain in the marble. Based on that perhaps the other shutter speeds would be worthy of use?

Nevertheless, rent an r5 and see if problem repeats with rented R5.

If it does not repeat, you have your answer on the next step of return and repair or just replace.

But if it does, well, answer not clear. Does the 1/5 shutter speed cause some sort of harmonic vibration or other electronic issues that are unavoidable at this speed. Is there something inside not properly torqued in place on a number of R5. That is a tough issue.

Are you using mechanical shutter or EFCS?

sometime ago i quit using tripods and monpod.

But with r5 I have had my best results with each of my old lenses and the Rf 28-70mm and 24-240mm.

All shot hand held.

What about others around here. Any troubles?

Camera (red) menu, screen 6 > Shutter Mode > Elec. 1st-curtain.

Also timer delay 2 sec.

It would be nice to get an answer to the original poster's question before expanding the thread by asking unrelated questions. Have you considered starting a new thread to ask your question? BTW, I have no difficulty at all seeing the blurriness in the shot taken at 1/5. Thanks.

Like others, my first hunch would also be experimenting with shutter mode. Though, that also does not make sense if 1/5 is affected and 1/2 or 1/13 aren't. I am assuming this is consistent enough to repeatedly reproduce

If you can make this happen at will, try Elec 1st curtain shutter first and go from there

  1. What was the lens used?
  2. Has no one else had or tried to duplicate this problem while using a tripod?
  3. What settings at 1/5 made the blurred image on your [other posters] R5 or R6?

If you suspect the IBIS, then why not turn it off and repeat the steps to see the results?

As he said: "At first I thought it was because IBIS was active so I disabled it. No change. Manual focus with the AF switch off and still I get a blurry image that is unusable."

The person who started the attached thread tested shutter speeds slower than 1/5s with the R5, using a tripod and manual focus, and obtained sharp shots.

All three examples used the Canon 11-24. It would be interesting to see if it happens with another lens.

I have an R5 and the 11-24 so I'll try it this weekend to see what happens.

That is really weird. Is it only at exactly 1/5 second? So are 1/4 and 1/6 just as sharp as 1/2 and 1/13, or is there a gradual fall-off of sharpness as you approach 1/5? Does this show up with other setups too, like different tripods, the camera just sitting on a table, handheld with IBIS (you should be able to handhold effectively slower than 1/5 at 13mm with IBIS)? Perhaps there's some kind of sympathetic vibration set up at that exact shutter speed with that tripod? I just did a quick test of my R with RF 35 F1.8 handheld at 1/2, 1/5, and 1/13, and there's no difference in sharpness (the IS on the 35 is plenty good enough to hand hold down to 1/2)

Thank you for shooting these. I'm at work but it would be interesting to see if the 1/5 sec blur was reproducible on a different camera. Actually, it would be good to try to bracket the shot like the OP.

I've taken 1000s of shots with the r5 and the same 11 - 24 lens (no IS on this lens). Many were at 1/5 sec, and I have never noticed a problem. I use a tripod, 2sec delay, fully mechanical shutter, and don't turn IBIS off in the camera. Hard to say what is causing the OPs blurry example. Curious.

Example:

1/5th sec.
1/5th sec.

Thanks for all the responses.
This problem occurs with all my lenses native and adapted.
IBIS and IS off on IS lenses etc.

I am increasingly convinced that the problem lies with the camera not locking down the sensor. I did get the problem at other speeds but that was when it first showed up and I thought that having IBIS active was the problem. With IBIS off the problem only seems to be at 1/5 second .

I will be sending off to Canon on Monday.
