I'm cynincal - suggestion for Phil Askey

but nobody goes to those forums....at least I haven't....ever...since joining this site.

I suppose we could tag "img" to the title line for those who are annoyed by such posts. As a sort of, long term resident here I have found that the brief cordiality we've enjoyed which began a fiew weeks ago is very welcome. I have begun to build mental images of my colleagues here and added them to my "digital family." This forum is sort of like a pub where you meet to discuss our favorite topics and renew discussions with old friends. This summer has been horrible with the obnoxious, negative, boasting diatribes and unending promotion of competitors' products.

We all drift off-topic occasionally; like wel do during meetings when the topic under discussion is not interesting to us. I also suppose the OP might have phrased his annoyance more discretely. I have to admit I was fascinated with Yves' children. All beautiful. Yves you are blessed.

The thing is many people post a picture here in the NSLRTF to
discuss a technique and some technical aspects of their Nikon
gears. It becomes a small community here and people get to know
each other better making it more propice for such posting.
For any of you who regularly peruse other manufacturer forums, do
you see the same thing there?
I propose a forum dedicated for all those sappy photographs of
family members, especially children, and cats.

Honestly, there's only so much I can take of children and cats.

Hi Shadco, just wanted to say I love your signature "What piano should I buy if I want to play like Mozart?"
I hope this doesn't start a piano brands war! :-).

Geeze it only took you 4 days to get that way too.

You could try raising the level by example.

the kids take after their mother :-).

At least that is what I always heard about mine......

Rich, interesting point on how things have gotten a bit "friendlier" in the past few weeks. Now, if a few of my less-favorite folks could find a new place to inhabit....

You mean the one whose intiials are G.B.? or the one whose name rhymes with Ferrarri? Have to be careful; they might search for references in the text body.

I just got to thinking these first pics and looked up my first pic with the D100. Here is the second one that I took. In the first one he had his eyes shut. This one was hand held. A thghter crop would have been better.

Happy shooting
Dwayne

You are right. I should not have said that about a picture of someone I don't know.

I'm not trying to excuse myself in any way but I guess I (wrongly) felt I could said what I said because of the emoticon you added at the end of the subject of your posting.
Again, no offense was intended. I apologize profusely.

I can't stand all those useless pictures either.
I particularly dislike posts by some people who take they very
first images with their brand new camera, and the subject is
usually something completely uninteresting or something in their
backyard, and then they expect people in this forum to comment or
make suggestions on how to improve theyr "style"!
How dumb is that??

Every night I'm on here. I just love the community and love cameras. It's great to see the pictures and try and learn and expand. And some of the pictures posted are very inspirational. Yves, Ron, Steven, and many others post great shots - I wish to acquire the skill that they possess.

Kind regards

I paid over $4k for one that has more experience capturing my little girl's image that anything else! But your comments will be especially appreciated by those who don't have either pets or children and don't understand the experience. Quite sad, actually.

Tom
All that I am saying is that cats and babies have their place and
shouldn't dominate a SLR forum.

We don't buy $2000 cameras to take pics of our cat and babies.

Me thinks when you buy a camera whatever the price, you can take pic's of whatever you want to. Is a cat pic any better/worse than a picture of a tree in a forest or a sunset?

sheese.....just relax and enjoy

The kid pictures were actually interesting to people other than the photographer/parent.

Lots of pap, not so much substance in most of those photos.

No harm done. You're a gentleman.

...sounds like a new list to me! :-)

We currently have:
  • Cats
  • Babies
I'll add:
  • Moon photos (!)
Anyone else?

Also, I am sure there are others like me who enjoy seeing photos taken by Nikon cameras and learning from the different techniques used by the photographer. If photos were posted only in the Samples and Galleries forum, we would have to wade through tons of photos to find the ones from Nikon cameras.

I enjoy seeing your photos Yves and have learned something from many of them. Keep posting them!

Atlanta-Mike
But yes you are right. They should be posted in the Sample and
gallery forum.

The thing is many people post a picture here in the NSLRTF to

Maybe I am just an ecumenical sort of person, but I am not bothered by kid or pet pictures. There is a learning opportunity attached to everyone. Who among us has not swooned over the beautiful color and clarity of the images of Yves P.'s daughter, with that perfectly sharp face but totally smooth skin. A beautiful child, yes, but a great technique worthy of emulation as well.

Whenever Ron Reznick posts an image, it is viewed by hundreds of forum denizens. There is almost always something to learn from Ron's images, and Ron's sharing and commentary.

I also learn about lenses when I see others' posted images. I don't need to go to a local camera store to decide if the new 700-200mm VR lens is sharp or if it has good bokeh. I have already seen it here. So what if the sharp image with good bokeh was a cat. In fact, cats and dogs are a good test of sharpness and image processing technique, among other things, because of their fur.

I occasionally post images. Seldom of pets (our dog is homely, looking like a cross between an Australian Sheep dog and a raccoon), but often of other animals and kids. I have considered posting these images on the galleries and images forum, but I am looking for comments from people I "know" through this forum, and from people who can make camera-specific and lens-specific comments and suggestions. This is particularly useful for the D100 because of its unique attributes and quirks.

Finally, a lot of accomplished amateur and skilled pro photographers are known to haunt this forum. When they comment on my images, I almost always come away with useful pointers that are attuned to Nikon equipment and software (including Capture 3.5.2). I don't think I would benefit as much from learning how I might have taken the picture using a Sony 717.

So, send in the cats. . . . and dogs . . . and squirrels. . . .and anyone Yves or Ron or many of the other fine image makers choose to shoot. I even like BCNHs and GBHs. Ron's ethereal GBH shot is still my favorite of all time on this forum.

Just my opinion.
The kid pictures were actually interesting to people other than the

I quite agree, and those certainly fall in the area of "learning technique". Having attended a worshop with Ron, and having him comment on a couple of images taken at the same venue, certainly help me. I hope others learn as well.

Now, to my question. It is late, i am tire, what the heck is GBH and GCNH? Wait a minute, is GBH Great Blue Heron by chance?
Just my opinion.
