DSLR the next rotary phone

Last year there was a brand new F-150 at the local dealer, no-frills, normally-aspirated 3.3L V-6 engine, extended cab, air conditioning, AND MANUAL CRANK WINDOWS. It sold very quickly. Two of us (me being one of them) said the manual crank windows were a deal-MAKER. The wifey agreed, but didn't want a truck 🙁.

I hear you.

TBH . . . for our primary car I would want power windows.

It is a blessing on our minivan being able to open up the rear most windows to vent out hot air.

Right now, I think our next 2 cars are going to be automatic transmission.

We are looking for a vehicle that can tow more than our minivan. (My wife dropped the idea of us getting a travel trailer). We are tossing around the ideas between a bigger SUV or a truck. But that's going to be automatic transmission and power windows.

And then my youngest is going to start learning to drive 4 years down the road. I am assuming that my oldest is going to want our current small car then to get to work. So I'm thinking that we will need to find another small automatic transmission car for our youngest to learn to drive on.

But . . . after that, I'm thinking of finding a cheap, used, manual transmission car for me to just scoot around town. LOL. And that is the car I wouldn't mind having crank windows on. Everything as manual as possible. But hopefully with at least air conditioning.

That's why I keep reading up on cars with manual transmissions and crank windows! LOL. :)

The current Nissan Versa base you can get manual transmission and crank windows. I think you can get AC on that without going to power windows.

There's a new 2021 Nissan Versa coming in. You can get manual transmission, but I don't know if it still has crank windows in the base model.

But I still have my turntable and a manual typewriter.

When the kids were younger, I pulled them out and let the kids try them out.
You can probably imagine how it went the first time I asked my kid to roll down the window in a car with roll-down windows.
+1

LOL.

That would be my kids, except I constantly complain about power windows to my kids.

So they are very familiar with crank windows! LOL! :)

I would always go on about how if power windows failed, they would be harder to fix.

I'd tell them of the time that one of the manual windows on our old car would get stuck. So one day I just pulled off the inside door panel and figured out it was a plastic guide that had cracked. So I fashioned a fix out of an eyelet hook and a piece of wood. That fix worked right through when we got rid of the car. It was a $2 fix. LOL.

I'm sure they would just shake their heads . . . until the window stopped working on our car with power windows.

It was snowing. We went through the drive-thru . . . so we rolled down the driver's side window. Ordered. Got our order. And as we were driving away . . . the window stopped working . . . in the down position! And it was snowing! LOL.

Had to drive home like that and put the car in the garage.

I'm sure there were a bunch of people shaking their heads as we drove home in the snow with the window open! LOL.

'never tracked down what the problem was. So, for the remainder of the life of the car (which wasn't much) we just didn't use that window. LOL. I even tried replacing the switch module. I was about to swap out the motor (if possible) with one of the other windows to see if it was the motor. But we got rid of it before then.

'thing is . . . Nissan used to sell a car here in Canada that had crank windows, right up until a couple of years ago.

The Nissan Micra.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Micra

We were in the Nissan dealership looking at cars (after someone totaled our minivan for us). We were looking at the new Nissan Rogue. But they had a Micra in the dealership. I knew about the manual windows . . . so I went to check it out.

The one in the dealership had crank windows, so I got my daughters to sit in the car and told them . . . back in my day . . . LOL.

I totally would love a manual transmission, crank window Micra just for myself to boot around it. Problem is . . . the cheap entry-level manual transmission, crank window version of the car does not come with AC. :( And to get AC, you have to add automatic transmission. :( And once you do that . . . I think the windows become power windows. :( To get manual transmission with AC, you have to go for the top-of-the-line Micra. But that has power windows.

To me, this makes no sense.

Why can't someone just make a basic car, but with AC. Nissan was so close!!! LOL.

LOL.
And don't get me started on explaining to the 20somethings I work how to start a car with a carburetor.

Got to admit I've had a car with a carburetor, but no manual choke. Not even my lawnmower makes me deal with a choke! LOL. :)
Yesterday i had to explain to my 9yo what a cassette tape is. Some day kids won't know what a CD is. Time is crazy.

LOL!
My grandmother was close to 100 when she passed.

She witnessed telephone, radio, motion picture, two world wars, television, the rise of photography and magazines like Life and Time and National Geographic, the electric guitar and rock n roll and the rise of the internet before she died.

Photography as we know it - 35mm - was only around for 100 years. 50 years of rangefinder dominance, 50 years of SLR dominance - give or take.

I wonder what will replace Mirrorless cameras, or is that the ultimate form before holograms take over?

Maybe they will just extract the memory right from our brains!

And to share the moment . . . they will transmit that memory to someone else's brain?

Sorta like Total Recall?

When I was 13 years old I dreamed of owning a Nikon F2AS, but it was way beyond what I could afford with the money I made delivering newspapers! (Another thing from the past the current generation can't relate to!)

Now, 40 years later I have my F2AS, a bunch of Nikkor glass, a few other film and digital bodies, plus various accessories.

Recently I was showing my F2AS to a younger person and I was explaining to them that one of the reasons I really like the camera is because it's completely mechanical with no electronics, and no need for a battery except to power the meter.

Their reaction: "COOL! How do you get the pictures from the camera on to Facebook?"

🙄🙄

Manual crank windows are fine, until you want to move anything but the drivers door window.
I don't think anyone is arguing that.

Just like, I don't think anyone is arguing that no one should have a camera that can't play Candy Crush Saga.

Thanks for the Red Green show clip. Great Canadian show. Brings back memories. I used to watch it all the time years ago. It was one of the cleanest shows on television and one of the funniest.
