I wrote to Fuji about the F700 and how i felt that the firmware was lacking in important spots.

i would suggest that anyone else who has concerns or who owns one and wants improvements do the same, perhaps someone is there who will listen.

I received the following courteous reply back very promptly from Fuji

David, what exactly did you write so I can echo some of yoru comments so that they realize there's a trend?

Also it's quite possible that even when there's a trend they won't admit it. But this was better than getting no reply that's for sure.

Here it is although possibly not the most coherent comments ;). I submitted this via the fuji USA website.

Product: FinePix F700

Operating System:

Serial Number:

Question / Comment: I am an owner of the F700 camera and while I am very impressed by the mechanical features and ergonomics of the camera, the firmware is sadly lacking as compared with similar cameras.

As the first camera to showcase the new SR CCD i find this very frustrating and in all honesty could not recommend this camera highly to anyone unless the firmware is upgraded.

I refer you to the review of the http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilmf700/ of which I am in major agreement.

Principally I ask:

Why no fine jpeg compression option?

The preview mode does not display any technical information and needs a histogram. There are very limited settings for controlling the saturation, sharpness, contrast. The new minolta g400 seems to have the right approach with five settings for the above and even five settings for each color channel.

Most perplexing to me is that there is now way to specify the combining of the SR sensor output. There should be away of doing this from fully off to fully on. Better yet, there should be a mode where each sensor output is captured into a separate JPEG.

I understand that there is a new raw conversion program that might be released in the near future that might address some of these issues?

However, shooting in raw mode reduces the functionality of this camera immensely.

Sincerely,

David Purdy

I added my feedback as well. Here is the link I used: http://www.fujifilm.com/JSP/fuji/epartners/MailTo.jsp?returnTo=ContactUs.jsp&contact=CONTACT_US_DETAIL_464160

The price is right, the hardware is right, they just need a couple software tweaks and it will be perfect (well OK, if it were the size of the SD10 and used SD memory it would really be perfect.)

Just wrote Fuji my own letter.

I asked for a firmware that:
  1. 1. provides jpeg compression levels for all resolutions
  2. 2. provides with a "contrast -1, +0 , +1" setting
  3. 3. provides with a "saturation -1 , + 0, +1" setting.
  • Raist

please ask for the this too:

1. support for 512 mb and 1 gb xd-cards
2. improvement of the sharpening algorithm
3. maximum shutterspeed of 8 seconds
4. on-screen guide when you use manual focus
5. indeed exposure information at playback

6. adding an extra menu at the F-button, where you can choose the amount of R-photodiode, like 100 % till 400 %
7. 6mp fine mode
8. FREE improved raw converter (48 bit TIFF)

You should probably write them yourself. Basically the more that write to Fuji the better.

I picked only what I picked becuase I think it would make the biggest difference while being (hopefully) a relatively easy upgrade.

As far as I know, the F700 already supports 512 megs XD's, and the 1 gigabyte XD is not out yet anywhere.

I am currently using theh 512mb xd card. I suspect that it already suports everything up to 8 gb
2. improvement of the sharpening algorithm
5 levels instead of 3?
3. maximum shutterspeed of 8 seconds
nice
4. on-screen guide when you use manual focus
5. indeed exposure information at playback
absolutely!
6. adding an extra menu at the F-button, where you can choose the
amount of R-photodiode, like 100 % till 400 %
I have been looking at some of the split images of the S and R and i think what you want to do it specify where the R begins to cut in and the amount of opacity.
7. 6mp fine mode
fine jpeg is a must!
8. FREE improved raw converter (48 bit TIFF)
that saves two files one for each photo diode set

Instead of saturation and contrast how about setting the adjustment for the luminosity curve at the 25% 50% and 75% spots and be able to adjust them by +- 10% (curve adjustment)

Or better yet, be able to adjust the each color channel at those same spots by +- 10% so you can adjust the curves.

How about being able to this for each Sensor and save as a file on the xD card? The curves could be defined on the computer and downloaded, all you would need is an entry/button to load the files onto the camera?

no just a more sophisticated one, so you don't have to use the soft-setting to get more resolution

nice

No just one image of course.

Mainly,I requested a firmware fix for:
-the single compression level
-the noise reduction destoying fine detail
I also requested a setting that provides two jpegs, one from each diode

That sounds pretty good.. Hmm I am just tyring to go for the "minimalist approach that hopefully can be firmware upgradable."

I was thinking, that probably we should agree on the standard minimums that seem like "they wouldn't be a big deal" to do on the firmware (they all could be in practice though), and create a formal petition to FujiFilm using the online petition website.

Excuse me for intruding here, since I don't even own an F700, and hence don't stand to benefit from firmware updates. I just want to say that in order to increase the chances of getting any kind of positive response from Fujifilm, it may be important to distinguish what can be done in firmware and what would have to be implemented in hardware. Otherwise, Fuji might prematurely dismiss the potential for adapting existing hardware controls to do the job. And that in turn could snowball into an overall dismissal of requests for "unreasonable" improvements.

As I read over this thread, it seemed to me that some of the items on people's wish lists might call for physical changes in the camera. For instance, curves adjustments might be implemented in software, but unless there's a knob to turn or a button to push or a slider to slide, nothing's going to happen.

Maybe those who have put these items on their wish lists have thought through how the user interface could be implemented with the existing controls on the camera. All I can say is that as a reader, and ex-software designer, I'd have liked to see some further elaboration of the requirements and a sketch of the elements of high-level design.

I had some witty comments but lost it ;). I agree that changes that require new hardware won't be implemented, on the other hand, if the only changes are just minor they might be viewed as only that, minor and not implemented.

First off, I do quite a bit of hardware/software design.

So, let me state how I would implement things in my world ;)

JPEG compression settings (add fine) - hit f button and add new menu for compression (it already displays a menu for resolution, iso, and affects) use software from S7000 or S602 for compression)

Noise reduction change - more difficult, as it appears that the code is consistent throughout the fuji range? At least the artifacts that are claimed to be a result of noise reduciton are...

Show shot information in preview mode - hit display button to cycle on off - use code from s602 - icons and text font is already built in to display the information while shooting. (lets put that histogram from the S7000 in there too)

Manual focus assits - use code from s602 or at least a simple distance bar like the A70

Produce two separate jpeg images, one for the S and one for the R sensor. Apparently the camera already produces two images - that can be seen in the raw data. Menu - hitting the shooting button on top already enables the selection of fast first five - bracketing - final five - continuos (in auto) add one more entry to enable this feature on this menu.

In what is called preview mode - the picture stays on the screen until enter or cancel is pushed - enable the down button to add a voice memo - as it is, the only way to add a voice memo is to go to play mode

Saturation - contrast brightness or RGB curve control - i am sure i could dream up a way to display this under the menu button control -

More control over sharpenning - add another couple of entries into the existing menu.

I kind of like the idea of being able to download a curve for each color channel onto the flash card from a computer (no clutter from additional menus). There is already a MISC directory on the flash card. Put a file in there names curves.rgb and the camera will read it at startup.

You could shoot a grayscale card (included of course) upload that picture into your computer and use it to generate a curve (using the fuji provided software) to give you better color representation in a given light - imagine you could even profile for the output device, say a Fuji printer? Now there is an interesting way for a company to make some money (our camera is optimized for our printers, or maybe it should be the other way around?)

Combining the S-R and having settings. I am not sure how to do this yet but I do know after viewing the two images that you just don't want to blindy put in in the less sensitive diodes, for one, if the Marf program is to be believed, more noisy.

The really interesting thing i noticed was that the normal CCD image from the Marf program looked very nice, much like a Canon picture (i understood there was some white balancing going on???). It was exposed very nicely (histogram) with none of the contrasty problems as mentioned in the dpreview, review. Of course some of the highlights were blown out (like my Canaon Elf would do) so I took the other image, normalized it to the same range, built a mask for the highlights and put that into the normal image and it looked pretty good. Not perfect but a very nice image.

By contrast, the TIFF image from the raw converter looked terrible. It had all kinds of highlight problems which i suspect was a result of adding too much of the low sensitivity diodes.

Anyway, i am just throwing out some ideas. Do I think that Fuji will put my curves idea into the F700? Nope. Do I think that they will change the firmware at all, probabaly not. On the other hand, if we don't ask, I am almost certain they will not and there is always the next camera!

David

They should take a 7000 for each of their software developer and shove it up their #%$&#^. And then maybe the next camera will have less compression. I hope Fuji will look at the reviews and forums like this. I still feel like the 7000 could have been a great camera. Smaller is not always better.
As I read over this thread, it seemed to me that some of the items
on people's wish lists might call for physical changes in the
camera. For instance, curves adjustments might be implemented in
software, but unless there's a knob to turn or a button to push or
a slider to slide, nothing's going to happen.

Maybe those who have put these items on their wish lists have
thought through how the user interface could be implemented with
the existing controls on the camera. All I can say is that as a
reader, and ex-software designer, I'd have liked to see some
further elaboration of the requirements and a sketch of the
elements of high-level design.

I will sound stupid for saying this, but do we even know if Fuji designed the camera to allow for firmware upgrading in the field (consumers PC's)?

I do not know enough about the design of processors inside today's digital cameras. I do know a chip (processor) needs to be designed to allow for firmware upgrades without a hardware change.

Maybe this is now considered commonplace. I just don't know enough about camera firmware upgrading.

David314,

Why did you buy this camera. You have read the review, played with the camera in the shop, and also had your chance to return it or exchange it. I do not think that you complain is fair. I have purchased a s400 after reading Phil's review. The s400 does not have record mode histogram and has no manual mode. Now, should I ask Canon to update the camera firmware? Your and my cameras are obsolete the next day after release. Fuji and Canon work on a new F800 an Canon s500 (or something like that). They may use our camera software as a starting point and change it but they want to sell the new camera and not update the old ones. This method works for them. The s400 is my seventh camera. With upgrades I would not waste so much money and would not finance the new development. No one would work for free.

If the camera is so bad we should not buy it and Fuji would feel it quick. However, I do like the camera but purchased the next in my list (s400) just because of $599 (F700)+ $100 (or so for xD memory) and $50 (or so for the second battery) and PLUS TAX. It would total to over $800. I do not think that $800 is a very attractive price for a three Mega pixel compact with 2.8 - 4.9 lens. It is prohibitive price. Instead I have purchased the s400 for $399, battery $11, CF memory from my Fuji 602 and plus tax. The total was $445 or about half the F700 price. Actually I could buy two S400 for $800. It was the only reason I have skipped on F700. I like the F700 camera very much. The s400 is a compromise that saved me $400.
