CIC 203 Black and White

Go out and take some photos and process them into B&W images (and with all shades of grey).
Or be bold and brave and set your cameras to monochrome and shoot that way.
This is a challenge for you to learn to try different settings for your conversions to black and white.

The Eligible Gallery: is for images captured with any camera, any brand, but during the Challenge period. https://pbase.com/cichallenge/cic203_eligible

The Exhibition Gallery: is for images taken any time with any camera. https://pbase.com/cichallenge/cic203_exhibition

All other rules outlined in the Official Challenge FAQ apply. Challenge FAQ can be found here: http://www.pbase.com/cichallenge/faq

Actually should always shoot in color as it has more information in the file esp in Raw! You will get a better B&W out of it!

Thanks. I always shoot in RAW. Most of us know that it is better to shoot in color and then convert, but we are sometimes looking for a new challenge. If I can find the right scene, I may try to shoot it both ways: RAW, and a OOC B&W, and then compare them.

On a related note, thanks for looking at the post. Are you interested in joining us for this challenge. It is all in fun, and we are a pretty loose group. No big prizes - but the winner gets to choose the next topic which we keep (mostly) general.

After thinking about this some more, I have converted my camera options to always shoot raw and monochrome jpegs.

I'll then compare them. I am guessing I will like my processed raws better, but since I can also process the jpegs as well, I might as well try it.

I'm not really interested- I belong to a very large camera club and spend most of my time there and teaching- however thanks for the offer!!

Ron - I see where you are in Green Valley. You must be referring to the Green Valley Photo Club.

I am in GV also, but live in Quail Creek. I'm VP of our QC club, but we are only about 75 members now, far less than yours.

....I was unaware of this, (though I do shoot raw, I did think of shooting monochrome...and now probably will not)

Best Wishes, Traveller (did some casual shooting today...we'll see)

Traveller,

My 90 D allows me to shoot RAW and Jpeg at the same time. So I set it up that way with the jpeg being a monchrome.

I put such a shot in pending, and you can see that my straight OOC B&W shot is not half bad without any post processing on it.

This is really going to be a challenge for me. Not only is it hard to get out an photograph, but also my favorite topics don't always lend themselves to B&W. But I'm going to try to get something anyway.

This is and old picture from 2012 that I did a B&W conversion on to see how it would come out:

It is a challenge for me as well, which is why I chose it.

"I don't see in B&W" is a phrase I have used. Some good photographers can.

I was always told that B&W is all about texture, contrast , and lighting.

We will see.

There are couple of "come to me" photos that I'm waiting to take. Hopefully they will be as good in B&W as I am anticipating. In the meantime, there are deer in the yard to shoot.

Two pictures uploaded:

Exhibition: https://pbase.com/cichallenge/image/170572358

Another picture of Pemaquid Light at dawn to see how that translates to B&W. I was up in time for a beautiful picture of dawn but by the time my wife woke up and we had breakfast, it had clouded over and it rained all day. A real black and white day.

Eligible: https://pbase.com/cichallenge/image/170572389

This picture of the Nashua River was taken looking upriver and into the sun; I was using the tree on the right to block the sun.

Right now it is not too hard to visualize how things will look in black an white. As Winter turns to Mud; the country side is pretty gray already.

Nice shots.

I left my comments on the photos.
