Are there any totally free pbase type galleries?

I totally agree with the others re PBase. Things have improved a great deal over the past couple of months, probably due to the fact that Slug is now charging. You can't run a business on air! $23 is real cheap - about three lens caps. I sell more of my images on PBase than anywhere else. The exposure (excuse the pun) is far more than I would ever get on a personal website.

Cheers

IT may SEEM like it costs more, but it doesn't. You have already
mentioned 2 upgrades and you just got your camera. Lucky your
dealer let you trade up lenses for the difference in cost. It
doesn't make sense to buy a cheap lens unless it's the lens you
want.
I was sooo far over budget I didn't have a choice but to get the tamron 24-135 in the first purchase. Plus, I needed the wider angle than the canon which was the 28-135. I think the tamron was defective b/c it made alot of noise and it was back focusing anyway. The canon focuses beautifully and lightning fast by comparison. I jsut couldn't push the $ any higher that day. After 2 weeks of digesting it all, I realized I had no choice but to swap it for the canon. plus I needed the IS to let me hand hold at lower shutter speeds.
expensive (lots of people swear by Tamron and Tokina 19-35) but I
wouldn't buy a lens that I didn't plan to keep for a while.
I'm desperate. I need it now for shooting hubbys construction jobs. To go to a better lens is a $500 difference. There's just no way I could do it now.
If you know you're going to upgrade, just get the right lens the
first time instead. You do the math. I believe you' re better in
the long run.
No can do. Hubby needs a rest! LOL!

Thanks,
Lonnit
I think though, despite all the above, I will be spending on the
gallery!

Warmly,
Lonnit
Pbase is cheap and very good for what they offer. The money we pay
is for the expertise that we do not have. Bite the bullett and pay
for a year of hassle free uploading.

Whoa! Back up a minute! You sell your shots on pbase? I've not wandered around there except for uploading my shots for the challange so I wasnt' aware of other services. You say you sell your shots there? How does that work?

Pbase doesn't handle financial transactions, but it does get people to look at your pictures.

One feature of pbase that you might not be aware of is that it maintains a page of recently updated galleries. A lot of people watch this page and check out galleries with interesting titles. Whenever I create a new pbase gallery, it gets hundreds of hits even before I tell anybody about it.

Since I have posted a gallery entitled "Price List", I have had several requests for both prints and CDs. Folk contact me through my email address and it goes on from there. One PBaser has set up a PayPal system on PBase but that is way beyond my IT knowledge. It is certainly looking a lot more professional than it has in the past, possibly due to the fact that money is being put into the site.

Ahhh.. so then they purchase thru a link to webstore or email the photographer.

When I'm at the point where I can sell I'll just link the gallery to my website and set up another storefront that can handle the sales. I already have an on-line biz so that's no big deal.

Yes, $ thrown at things can tend to do that! LOL!

It's late so I didnt' have time to do anything but load in some pix. But here they are. The ones from Manhasset I took today. I was very happy with them considering I'm only 3 weeks into this new photography hobby. :) Feel free to post any comments. I can only learn by critique!
I hope you enjoy it.

Give "Gallery" a look. It is freeware and is PHP based.

http://gallery.sourceforge.net

PHP (or more accurately mod_php) with Apache is easy to setup and works well (even on Windows), but IIS could work with PHP via CGI. Higher performance can be obtained via FastCGI, but it may not be that simple to setup (it took me awhile to get that to work well).

I'd like to start a gallery. I was going to do it on my domain but
I'd prefer a pbase type one where people can enter comments. I
can't build one of those myself. Pbase only offers it free for 30
days and then you can't add to it, plus they may remove it. ARe
there any free ones out there?

Thanks,
Lonnit

I want a Canon 1Ds, but can only afford a Canon A70.

I hate those sites with pop-up ads. I'm a big pbase fan. The fee for a year is very reasonable, about $23 if I recall correctly.

Hi Lonnit!

You are prolific! The enthusiasm is wonderful. I see you've gone pbase and that seems to be a good site.

However, if you're looking to sell your photos in the future, you might want to consider something like http://www.photoreflect.com which is free.

Putting stuff up is completely free and you can setup your packages for sale as you like and even include a batch of remote labs to do the print work or setup packages for local print. You can setup discounts, shipping options, etc. You can also setup your own logo for the site and create your own watermark which will be put over the images on the site.

All the setup and photo editing, package editing, etc. is done with a remote client you download called PhotoReflect Publisher. It's basically a watered down version of their premiere pro packages that are $750.00 a pop available at http://www.expressdigital.com and which seem VERY full featured. You can download them for trial runs. Windows only.

All this is free but they take fees for anything you sell. They also take fees to process payments since they receive the funds and cut you checks every two weeks. The fee if you're doing under $20,000/year is 18%. While this may seem high, if you don't want to build your own site taking the time to create it, secure it and setup payment processing, etc. it's not bad. Especially since you can put up as much as you want. If you aren't selling, you aren't paying.

Just thought you might be interested in this for the future. It's not for everyone, but it seems to be working for a batch of photographers.

I guess the best of both worlds would be Pbase with a photo-store add-on system for X bucks. Maybe that's the way Pbase is going but I don't know.

Good luck and keep on shootin'!

Hi Lonnit!

You are prolific!
LOL! I believe I've become an addict!

How could anyone NOT be enthusiastic with a 10d in their hands and the incredible people in this forum to guide them!
pbase and that seems to be a good site.
I sacrificed actual sleep last night to get those shots up. There's no info accompanying them yet except titles. And those may even change. LOL!

It sounds great if one doesn't have access to an online storefront. Fortunately I do and it's not such a big deal for me to set it up, but I will check this out and keep it in mind. :) Thanks.

apart from a slight problem with the thumbnails, it's ok for me. Click on the photo link below and click the "next" button to view more. I am going to remove the pics with the missing thumbs and hope that by re-submitting them, repair their database.

PS. Have you given up shooting car door mirrors then ?

I like the bird/feeder shot - looks like it should be a poster with some text on it!

LOL! Far to controversial! LOL! ;) Instead I shoot my butt in the bathroom mirror - nobody seems to mind that!!!!!!!!!! LOL!

as for what you're doing wrong? Nothing as far as I can see, you have a great eye for a picture. You look for the unusual whereas I tend to stick to the traditional. I really must be more radical in my approach. The great tit on the bird feeder is one of those shot's you get while shooting but don't realise that it's ok until you see them at home. It is one of my faves along with one of my swan shots on pbase. (eoslensman)

Thanks for the nice comment too. Now try and get your butt in a car mirror, I'd really like to see that. ;-)
