I am in a unique position that I am starting over with my camera system.

I keep wavering between a 1DX MK III / 5D MK IV combo or going with 2 R bodies.

I honestly like the DSLR'S better. I have shot mirrorless in the past and find that after shooting a long wedding day my eyes are shot from the EVF. My concern is that if I invest $30,000 in an SLR system it won't be supported in 10 years.

I really just don't like the R bodies. The RF lenses look amazing though.

Shoot what you like and are comfortable with.

Tiny TV Screen finders really wipe out night vision. Make it difficult in dim venues and night photography.

As for mirrorless - still get excellent images from one of mine made in 1920's with the original bellows.

You can always change later and by then what is good now will be pennies on the used market.

I really like the new R system but I cannot stand the EVF. So I am waiting a few years to change. Seems like you are a pro so in that case just go with what works for you now.

This is my own totally useless opinion, but I feel these mirrorless bodies are still a generation or two away from full maturity. For one thing, I'm not satisfied with the current EVF technology.

For now, I'm perfectly happy with my 5D4 and might go for a 5D5 should such a body ever materialize. In about five years, when (again, my opinion) mirrorless is fully baked, I would then consider a switch or a supplement to my DSLR.

One challenge could be the weight-and-balance issue when you combine heavier EF lenses with a lighter, smaller R body. I would have no plans to dump a closetfull of a dozen EF lenses. We'll certainly never see an RF equivalent of the MP-E 65 speciality macro lens.

I sold my 5D4 recently and got the R. The 5D4 is a better camera. The new lenses I want are RF however, and the future ones will be RF as well.

I'm not the person to really answer the question because I'm 78 and am happy when I use my 5D4 for "special occasions or shooting something special" but I've gotten tired of lugging around all of that weight just for casual shooting. I little over a year ago I bought Sony RX100 VI's for my wife and I as walkarounds. 10.7 ounces each and makes great photos.

But in the meantime I've got more Canon DSLR equipment than my car is worth so I'm sticking with it--- especially at my age.

I’ll stay with DSLR for as long as Canon makes them. Waiting on the 5D V.

Yes tried the R, it was a pile of you know what, slow AF, more like a toy camera, DSLR all the way, you pay your money you takes your choice.

I have no hurry to consider migration to mirrorless, but this is simply because I only upgraded from 5D mk III to mk IV last year, so any personal future camera body upgrade considerations are probably something like 3-4 years in the future anyway.

2 R bodies? What do you shoot? Products and arcitechture and other slow stuff would be fine, I guess. But any action-ish stuff? Forget it. For that you'd need a Sony A9, probably. And even then struggle with the EVF lag.

I'd grab a 1DXmk3 (or mk2) in a heartbeat. And a 5DSR (or 5Dmk4/5) for the non-action stuff. In fact, I already did - I now own the 1DX2 and 5DSR since dumping my Sonys a couple of years ago. Not returning to ML anytime soon. Lots of ergonomics issues and speed issues to be solved first.

I'll swap over to mirrorless if and when when mirrorless is better at the task. No sign of that at present, but if the technology ever gets there, fine. I don't care whether my camera is an SLR, or mirrorless, or made out of pixie dust. I just want it to work the best way a camera can so that I can work the best way I can.

I learned from buying the D30 not to go into a new system too early. I paid over $2k for that D30, but should have waited for the next iteration. I paid too much and could have had better features for much less had I waited.

The R is well out of my budget, and although I've been tempted by the RP something is telling me to wait it out. I'd love to add a FF body to my gear, so I'll wait to see what Canon does with the RF system or maybe I'll pick up a 6D II next time there's another round of discounts.

No.

A few months ago my stuff got stolen so I had a clean slate. (and a empty studio) The only things I had left was one 5DmkIV an a 24-70LmkII. Anyway. I took a long look at Sony and I thought about rebuilding my EF collection. I decided to buy a R with RF50, RF85 and RF70-200 first. Mèn, did I get a surprise! I never used my 5DmkIV again. The files from the R are just as good but the RF lenses are much better than I was used to (My standard lenses were the EF 50L and EF 85L f/1.2 copies). Eye-af is nearly perfect... it makes the 5D look like something for another age.

The R is by no means perfect but this summer the EOS R5 will hit the market. It will be very expensive I'm sure. Could well be twice the price of a 5DmkIV by then. I'm in line for the 5R, it seems the future. For me, ymmv.

I just purchased a 6DII and LOVE it. I was looking at both the R and 6DII especially because I hear that dealers are starting to discount the R and the price is comparable. (I didn't find that though once you add RF lenses). I am glad I chose the 6Dii--the R is evolving and I am sure one day it will be a great camera, but it's not there yet. (I know too many people that ended up returning it). Plus when holding the R, it just didn't have a good feel--the grip felt skimpy.

If I am going to pay that much for the system--I want to feel the build quality (I guess mirrorless due to their lighter weight, just feel like "less camera" but I need to get over that.

The 6Dii checked all the boxes--excellent full-frame at a pretty good price.

With the new Fuji and Hasselblad war, older MF systems are plummeting in price and nice H5 or H6 systems are cheap to get.

To strengthen the feeling of a job done right, I even read the old (raving) reviews around 2015 - and feel like I really bought a 30k system for a fraction of the price. I just love early adapters, they make my addiction affordable.

If I were you, I'd wait till September - as many Canon products will be announced this year meaning price drops on some dslr gear and second-hand bargains.

Maybe buy a DSLR and an R now if you can't wait. I buy pairs of cameras at a time do I don't have to think about ergonomic differences.

Personally I'd rent a few bodies to try out if I was dropping that much cash on a system. Remember to budget for fast computer and lighting too.😊

I think Canon support gear up to 7 years after end of production.

I’ve just been through the same thought/decision process. I’ve been using SLRs for more years than I care to think about (with a brief excursion into medium format) and DSLRs since 2004.

I finally decided to go with a 5D4. So far I’m very happy with the decision.

However, I can see that with Mirrorless and hybrid mirrorless/DSLR developing over the next few years, I could see me reviewing the decision. Particularly as I age and the sheer weight of the 5D4 with battery grip and lenses may ‘encourage’ me to lighten up.

Currently I’m happier with the familiar, but I felt the same way about the film/digital move!

There's actually a thread about that very topic, asking if there will be a DSLR / mirrorless hybrid. There really can't be such a thing, as a DSLR will always require a mirror box. So even if you were to have a live-view finder to add on the hotshoe (as on the M6 II), there will still be a mirrorbox req'd for the OVF and therefore it won't be mirrorless at all.

So the question will really be if you can be ok with an EVF at some point. There's no question in my mind now that the DSLR will at some point stop getting updates.

I realize it’s a guessing game but do we feel that canon will eventually release a 5D5 or nah?
I’ve heard talk of later this year, but we’ll see. I hope so. I can’t stand the thought of getting stuck with only mirrorless choices.
