Using a 24-105. AF turned on and steady shot turned on on the lens. Steady shot is greyed out in the menu and also in the functions. The symbol shows on the LCD screen but it is flashing with an exclamation mark. No steady shot symbol shows in the EVF. Can anyone suggest what is happening?

It the lens has a Steady Shot switch (like the 24-105) you can only control it with the lens, not on the camera.

Tried a different lens. 35mm 2.8. Got a message saying the lens wasn't recognized. No focussing functions worked.

Then put back the 24-105. Now everything is working??? Any idea what happened? Is this likely to be an intermittent fault that should be checked? I assume that some contact point somewhere went AWOL. Does this often happen with the A7R3? I have just got the camera after an A7R2 and it never happened on the A7R2.

Thanks, but I tried it with both the Camera steady shot switch on and off and it made no difference. Something was wrong as the steady shot symbol on the screen was flashing with an exclamation mark.

Maybe the lens wasn't mounted correctly? Humidity (airco) maybe.

I would make sure the lens and camera contacts are clean. If all else fails a camera reset may work. In many cases resetting the camera seems to work wonders with Sony.

It is looking like a contact issue to me as well. I have never tried cleaning the contact points. Any issues in doing it that I should know first?

I had the same problem and sent the lens back to Sony for a repair.

I had problems with my NEX5N getting bricked during a firmware update after two years. Today the camera no longer works. Then I had problems with my A7 lens camera connection, so reliability is always a concern of mine.

I would be inclined to send it to Sony if the warranty is still good.

Careful inspection and a firm wipe with a lint free cloth (of the lens contacts as well as the camera contact pins) has worked for me in the past.

I would steer away from solvents. A very light dab of isopropyl alcohol on the cloth might be ok, but I would not go further than that. If there is an issue, you'll likely be able to see it under a good light.

I think I had a similar problem when my equipment was new. If the camera and lens are new, the fittings are probably tight. Don’t turn the lens slowly when mounting it; instead give it a smart turn so that it locks fully in place. If not new, dirt on the mount surfaces could be the cause as others have said.

I will do a careful clean of the points as recommended. Yes, the lens was new, I will take considerable care in future to use a very positive turn when changing lenses. When the issue first happened, I did try tightening the lock on screen action a little but all felt OK and the problem remained.

The issue hasn't repeated. While I am grateful for that, it has left me nervous. Maybe the issue might return and maybe it wouldn't correct? I have a couple of trips to do where the camera will be critical.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts.
