1Ds in UK for £3523 inc VAT

Yes better keep this one hush-hush, I've just put my order in. So it's fingers crossed. Perhaps we can keep each other updated on the progress of our orders?
They confirmed price and it is a 1DS. However they have 20 due in
on 15th October and have 22 orders and told me that they have been
notified this morning that the camera has been discontinued.
.....and those 22 orders will be "Phantom" ones, no one will
receive a camera as they'll all have been "Pre-ordered" beforehand,
Well, they will now that the "clever" people on here have been
ringing Dabs HQ and blurting out that the price is so low. Keeping
ones mouth shut was the key to this - I just hope you guys who
called up haven't blown it for me and the others on the order list.

And you can't Ring them ANYWAY - there is no phone number and they state on their website that they cannot be contacted by phone!

That is to me anyway one of their stranger business practices. Most companies just keep you hanging on their automated system till you give up. Except on the sales number of course.....

They were never going to ship any 1DS's at that price. It was clearly an error you could tell from the confused link on the site, which by the way has now been removed

I spotted a 20-35USM with a damaged front element on MXV's site for £9 !! so I was ringing about a focus screen anyway so told them that i'd have that knackered 20-35 for £9 as well - they of course said it was an error - they have the RIGHT to do this under the heading of E&OE (Errors and omissions exempt) - Mifsuds did the same pricing a mint boxed 100-400L at £350 , they'd got the price mixed up with a 100-300L which they hadn't put on the page ;-)

The big question is WHY Did Dabs lie to you when they said that they had 22 orders and the price was right? - why not just say that they'd made a mistake and put the 1D price up instead, as you say, there is NO WAY that they'll sell a 1DS for well under cost price and that those 22 orders are the 20 phantom ones to handily cover the amount received and two from this forum who won't see one..

I think that Dabs know what they pay for stuff, and unless a 22Mp 1DS-II is around the corner, the actual 1DS won't be £3500 for a long while yet

If you take a look about (eg Ffordes) you'll see that the 1D is now available brand new for £2200. Maybe the price has dropped on the 1Ds too but just not happened everywhere yet. Dabs are usually okay - you'd get your money back; indeed, they do not take the money until it is sent. David Atherton, the owner, seems a reasonable bloke - email him with your concern his email addtess was [email protected].

Just ordered a 1D. :)

I didn't say you did.

BTW, finding the Dabs phone number isn't that hard! Especially with the multiple directory enquiries we now have ;-)

The reason I rang to check the price was because I have fallen foul of a Dabs web site error once before and it took very long time and a great deal of effort to get my money back.

I wanted a 1DS at that price but due to my past experience there was no way I was placing an order on line for £3500 against an advert that had so many clear mistakes in it.

By the time I rang Dabs had already spotted the error which is why they wouldn't take my order over the phone and subsequently removed the item from their site.

As for you 'lucky ones' who got the order in early well only time will tell and I really hope you get the camera but in all honesty I don't think you have a cat in hells chance

Congrats, it still never ceases to amaze me after 4 months ! - you've no doubt seem all my 1D shots scattered around the Lens forum even with the cheapest of lenses ;-) - It really is one Hell of a camera way waY wAY WAY beyond it's "4-megapixel" sensor rating - a tool which IMO really is a lot more than the sum of it's parts :) Not perfect but then nothing is

Bravo! Full marks for having your eyes open and using your brain.

Next you'll be telling me that the other product they shipped to me at 3/4 price couldn't have been shipped!

No. You "get real". I'm not into ripping companies off and I'm not expecting Dabs to send the camera at that price but if they make a mistake, why point it out. If they charge a credit card for the amount, why point it out? If they send the item having done so, ... etc.

If it was the other way around I bet it wouldn't be so easy getting your money back.

Be greatful for these things and keep your mouth shut. That's my advice (but it's too late in this case...)

I'm now awaiting the "our information was wrong. do you still want to continue with the order at the correct price of £...." email.

Ive already posted this lower down in the thread but in case you missed it here are my reasons for ringing:

I am glad to hear that you got something at a bargain price but if you had been caught out like me in the past I am sure you would have done the same thing

Anthony

Damn I can't believe I missed this post. If I saw this in time I would have bought 5.

Still thinking about selling my 10D getting a 1D though - £2200 - £300 if you buy an EF lens (£80 for a 50 f1.8). Good deal. Not sure about the 4mp though - would love the 11mp of the 1Ds since it's the only SLR with large enough file sizes for Image libraries.
Just ordered a 1D. :)

Yep. 'tis possible. I'm sorry to hear you got caught out. However, I've ordered many things from Dabs and have had no problems (yet... maybe this is the first ;-)

I think this is one reason they removed the link - I can imagine they have had several thousand orders... at least.

I spotted the info on here within 2 hours, so wonder where I am on the list (if there is a list). My order is still there even tho' the link has gone.

Anyway, not to worry if it doesn't happen - in 18 months time even that price tag will look too much anyway!

dd (sure that Canon will release a new camera v.v.soon)

I'm all in favour of a bargain when you can get them.

I think its time to put this thread to bed.

No hard feelings I hope

Anthony

I saw the thread at about 7pm yesterday, and ordered one straight away, printed of my order confirmation and got my confirmation email later.

I was expecting a phone call or an email telling me they had messed up or were out of stock and were not getting them again, but I have not had any contact from them.

I went on the sight tonight to see the camera is not for sale anymore,so I checked the order tracking and all it says is "awaiting stock" if you click that it tells you "This means that we have either not ordered the item yet, or our supplier has not given a firm date. This status should change to a due date within two working days. "

I would guess if they didn't have mine on the list or know they are not going to supply it they would contact me,but they have not yet.

My order confirmation clearly states a EOS 1DS so if the 1D turns up it will go straight back,it's nice but I am not paying one 1 1/2 grand more than what warehouse express are selling it for.
If the camera never comes at least I have not lost any thing .
I will only have the disappointment of not getting one.

I will let you all know if it ever turns up.

Well,

I finally received the expected email telling me that Dabs got the price wrong. They are offering an alternative camera for only about £2.5k and provide a link to a page showing it.... but - guess what - the page offering this alternative does not work! Hmm, they are losing it big time in the Ecommerce quality stakes.

Ah well, so they will not be honouring my four orders, what a shame. I had my Ebay ad already written in my mind :-)

So I guess this means that a 1Ds price cut/replacement is not as imminent as the slashed price seemed to suggest.

Full mail ending this mini saga follows

Can't make use of it myself unfortunately but I just noticed that
Dabs (www.dabs.co.uk) are currently showing the 1Ds for £3523 inc
VAT with delivery in less than a week.

I suspect the first two digits are the wrong way round and I don't
know how long they'll be showing this price, but if your in the
market for a 1Ds anyway, there's at least a chance of a decent
saving.

If you give it a try, let us know via this thread how you get on.

You can bet that the alternative camera is a 1D at the usual Rip-OFF DABS Price - i fact they say that they 're doing you a favour but in fact are charging about £300 more than Warehouse express or Park - LOL ..

But then what do you expect from a Joke of a company who wants £50 more for the 300D Body than others are asking for the Kit !!

Oh no its just not that simple, its the page for the new 3D with FF & 12 MP for that price....just thought I would get in before the conspiracy theorists add this blank page to their list of 'evidence'.
