gannets galore

Much better, thank you! It's good to see what people can do - I hadn't thought of even trying this 😊

Hi Mark_A, and thank you 😊

I gave up on the 80-400 in the end. I could only afford it second-hand, and I got two 'not-sharp' ones - I guess there was a reason they were returned very little used......

So I went for the 200-500, with the 1.4tc, and I really like it.

Excellent! I think I favor #1 but all are great!

Great, glad you got a set up that works.

Makes me wonder though as I am / was thinking of upgrading my AF 80-400 to an AFS 80-400 but your experience with them makes me wonder if that would be a wise move.

I think a 1.4 TC for my 200-500 will be my next purchase.

Of course I'll have to get approval from the budget committee chair...but my wife is a keen photographer too!

Great shots

They get very good reviews - as I said, I think I was fishing in a self-selected 'there's something wrong with this lens' pool.

It would have suited me very well, if had worked out. Though I do now have some extra reach, which is good.

thank you :-)

thank you :-)

Thank you 😊 Yes, am really liking it - though I must find a way to pad the tripod for carting it from one spot to another - my right shoulder can tell that’s what I’ve been doing!
I haven't had time to write a proper note regarding your gannets - they are indeed special images, jawdropping. You can be proud of them.

Tripod pads for each leg - I use these, in the U.S. at any big retailer, i.e. walmart, hardware stores, cheap - they usually come 4 to a package - already split down the middle just slip them over the legs. If you ever bird/photograph from a vehicle - a small piece covers right over the edge of the window for a handy camera stabilizer. Here is example from Amazon U.S.

They stay put solidly on the tripod legs. Provide nice padding, and your tripod won't get scratched up in brushy areas.

Thank you - both for the very kind words on the gannet photos, and the help with padding my tripod - looks like a good idea. Whilst I seem to be acquiring extra padding myself as I get older, none of it is on top of my shoulders........;-)

Interesting. I can see some 80-400 AFS for sale with a warranty. About £950, might risk it at some point.

I have heard good things of the 200-500 also. Haven't seen any used though.

I don't have to take a decision quickly though so there is time to think.

Interesting.. as I age, I'm getting thinner. Unfortunately, the area affected is limited to the top of my head. ;)
