Canon 6D--repair or replace?

I have a Canon 6D about 5 years old. The LCD screen has failed , and it costs $500 USD to fix, vs about $900 - 1000 to buy a new one. Canon's report says "Camera requires main pcb assembly replacement because of power problems"; I guess pcb = printed circuit board??

Any recommendations on whether this is worth repairing? The shutter count is around 14,000.

[Earlier I posted this in the wrong forum...there doesn't seem to be a way to remove it there.]

If it's $500 to fix, you can by a mint used 6D for $600-675 all day long. Definitely do not spend that kind of money.. sell it for parts (I am assuming everything else still works on it.. which I am guessing you'd end up getting $300-400 for).

I suppose you could also take a stab at fixing it yourself, if you are comfortable with some disassembly. It might be something as simple as a ribbon cable that might need to be reinserted.

Myself I'd go with option one. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Thanks, txsizzler. So if I can sell it for parts for $300, and buy a very good used one for $650, then my net cost is $350 and I'm saving $150.

Of course, that must be weighed against not knowing for sure that the used one is "very good" as claimed, what it's been through, etc., whereas for my own I know exactly how it's been treated.

I have to figure out if that's worth $150.

Check out the Buy and Sell section on FM Forums. Look for a reputable seller on there with good feedback. You are almost for certain to get what is listed in their ad, in the exact condition specified.

I have a similar dilemna. My old 6D LCD is cracked. Still works fine. This is not my main camera anymore, and rarely gets used. I feel like it might be a great hand-me-down to one of my kids, but kinda feel like I should have the screen repaired first. Hate the idea of spending $$ to get it repaired - but it really has been an awesome camera!

I try to be careful with my money. While I don't like hard rules for this sort of thing, I'm wary when repairs cost more than half of the replacement cost. Five hundred to repair a 6D would be a deal-breaker for me. On the other hand, 14K shots is nothing for this body. tough call.

Buy a more recent camera model, mirror or mirrorless, 6D is old tech ...

6D is still pretty great. Hell, my 5D can still do wonders with photos. Your argument is ripe full of holes and pathetic.

You're probably not going to find a camera with better picture quality for the $500 to fix his existing 6D. Now if he can go all the way up to ~$1300, the EOS RP probably has better image quality and is more modern.

Thanks to all for the helpful comments. I decided to go ahead with the Canon repair, pricey as it is. It seems like the best option for me, but it's clear that other choices are very valid for other people.

if you sent it in to Canon Repair they should have offered you an alternative to an Upgrade if you didn't want to fix it under their special Upgrade program .. new cameras and lenses get 15% discount off retail... Refurbished get 10% off .. if you are in the US here's the tel # for that Canon program 1-866-443-8002.. all you need is your Repair #

my Canon 6DMkII sure beats using that ol' Petri 7s 35mm back in 1967 in RVN
