Aloha all!

Having bought & returned an RP and spent hours (dare I say days & days) pouring over forums, videos, specs etc. Like everyone else It came down to the Z6, A7III, and EOS R.

I knew I loved the form factor of Canon, the AF of the A7III (Just rented one), and the colors of Nikon. But after comparing all 3 and the various pros and cons with each, the Nikon seems to come out ahead.... plus every single pic I see with that f4 kit lens just looks stellar! IBIS is better, Build seems more solid, the EVF and touchscreen are levels above the Sony, yadda yadda yadda :) They all take amazing pics, but the Z system is what I think I should invest in.

So, what lenses would you recommend? I've owned a D200 and D5500, so Nikon FF is new territory for me. I shoot mostly landscape (Montana, Yellowstone, Glacier NP etc.), and low-light with my 6 (quick) children.

Looking for an inexpensive 200mm+ reach and a wide prime or zoom to compliment the 24-70 kit lens... any gems out there worth purchasing used? Curious how the FTZ adapter works with 3rd-Party as well.

Thank in advance for the help!

Z 14-30 f.4 S and 70-300 AF-P.

Together with 24-70 f/4, these three lenses form a great set.

I agree completely with that. That is pretty much my travel kit although I also take a D500 body if I am expecting to do any wildlife shooting.

I also am very, very happy with my 105mm Micro-Nikkor on the Z6.

I switched to Nikon when Sony began the move to mirrorless and began dropping the A mount.

I have a Z7 with 24-70 kit lens, the 14-30 and the 70-300 AFP with adapter. It all works great. I still have a full set of primes including macro lenses.

The AFP is a great lens until Nikon releases a Z mount telezoom.

Thanks everyone!

Do any of you have some sample photos taken with the 70-300 AF-P?

Are there different versions of that lens, if so which variant should I get?

... looks like there are some on sale in eBay for sub $200!? Is that the right lens!
Thanks again,

~C

Go to flickr and search for the combo.

There is a DX and a FX version of the AF-P 70-300. You need the FX version.
The sub 200 dollars might be a older 70-300..

I have the af-s FX 70-300 and i am thinking about selling to get the AF-P version too.

I went with the 14-30mm , 24-70 F4 and 50mm F/1.8 that 50mm is an absolute bargain considering how good it is . Same story with the 24-70mm as part of a kit it is a fantastic must buy.

Make sure you get the FX version. Retail is about $600.00

It's really a very good lens for the price. Much better than previous versions and a bargain even at full price.

Perfect! Thanks so much for taking the time to post the pics... sounds like a great lens.

Just looked on eBay, only one used :D.

How have you found the AF to work with the adapter?

I'm also curious how AF in general is performing on the Z6 sans the 3D... that was my favorite AF of any camera I'd used when I was using Nikon DSLRs.

Thanks again!

Almost every pic from the native Z mount S glass looks outstanding... Since I use Luminar & Affinity vs. Adobe products how difficult would the 14-30 be to correct?

Agree concerning the Kit... best of any MILC system I'm researching.

Thanks!

AF is accurate and seems fine to me. Without a native lens to compare it's kind of pointless to compare speeds but it works for me.

I have never used Luminar or Affinity so cannot help you there. Hopefully someone will respond that uses them . I did test a 14-30mm file on photo ninja with corrections disabled , looking at the results I don't think doing the fixes manually would be an issue

Any thoughts or experience using the AF-S 28-300 VR 3.5-5.6?

Thanks!

Curious how the FTZ adapter works with 3rd-Party as well.
It depends - a few 3rd Party lenses do not currently work with Z bodies. Some can be updated - and some cannot.

Apart from this they perform as they would on a DSLR.

I don't like adapters. That's jsut me. I sold my DF & D800 when I got my Z6.

Sold all of my F mount glass. Only own two Native Z lenses now. But I'll get more, in time.

It's the AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR

This thread has a lot of sample photos and quick reviews.

I turned off the VR on the 70-300 and wow, the view through the EVF is really wobbly. What a huge difference with VR on!

70-300 AF-P on the Z series?

Yeah, the 70-300, 24-70, 14-30 is a good set.

After following up on all your suggestions my list and order of acquisition is pretty much as follows.

  1. Nikkor Z 24-70mm F4
  2. Nikkor FX AFP 70-300
  3. Nikkor Z 50mm 1.8
  4. Nikkor Z 14-30mm F4
I'm curious of thoughts on the AFP 70-300 vs. the 70-200 (F4)?

The 70-200 seems to score quite a bit higher on DXO and I'm wondering if procuring that with a 1.7x Teleconverter might be a good solution?

Thanks for lending your thoughts!

I do not see DXOMark results for AF-P 70-300, only older versions are in their database AFAICT. On Thom Hogan's dslrbodies,.com you can read a review of AF-P 70-300 where he compares it with other Nikon zooms briefly. The only advantage of 70-200 f/4 seems to be the extra stop. I have both zooms and I prefer AF-P 70-300 on Z 7.
