I expected the DS to deliver more blurry background than the standard version of the lens but am surprised to see that the bokeh balls are so much more rounded with the DS as well. That definitely makes it an important consideration...
From what I understand an apodization filter, in effect, sort of reduces the aperture, as it's like a concentric ND filter, hence the T stop difference, and hence why the effect of vignetting is reduced, as it's like shooting this f1.2 lens at around f2 or so in that regard - you can see that the bokeh balls in the centre are quite a bit smaller than the regular version.
You can still see deformation from vignetting in some parts of the sample provided (lower right for example), so it appears that the filter isn't quite strong enough to fully obscure the edge of the lens.
