Greetings all!

Thank you for taking the time to read my first post, long time DP review reader and love the new team on their YouTube channel.

Short background. I’ve been a YouTube creator for ten years, making instructional guitar videos.

Very excitedly I’m making the leap into product photography, I’ve got a few jobs currently and for the rest of the year.

My current gear is a Sony A6300, sigma 30mm 1.4, 10-20mm f4, 50mm 1.8,

My question is for future product, concert and portrait photography (web, socials, brochures etc),

This year I can purchase one of the following a Sony A7iii or a Sony G Master 24mm 1.4, which one would you get?

Pat

How are you set for lighting, audio? Lighting will make a greater difference than any single camera or lens. Unless you are up on stage, a 24mm might not cut it for concerts. You really don’t seem to have any portrait lenses either. I would stick with the a6300, perhaps pick up the Sigma 56mm and some LED lights. What do you think?

You seem to be missing a short tele (85mm or so). which could be very useful for all the fields you mention.

I’m wanting to move into full frame in the next year I just thought the a7iii or a decent 24mm 1.4 would be a better move than more apsc glass?

Hey Jon!
Thanks for taking the time to reply,

I’ve got a 50mm already and all good for lighting and audio,

Just curious but why do you think the 24mm g master would be no good for concert photography? -or are you meaning on a crop sensor body-
It's all good! I just thought if you're going to be shooting concerts and and portraits, a longer lens would be useful.

When purchasing an A7iii - what lens would you use for it? I think you should have at lest 2-3 lenses for a camera to have good use of it.

So I would start with a few, nice FF lenses (85/1.8, 24/1.4, 1635GM ;-)) and buy the A7iii whe yo uare ready to switch.

Or buy the camera and get some nice vintage manual lenses which can be very nice for video. And a macro for your product shots.

I meant a FF 85mm or so.

I think a 24/1.4 lens might be the more useful addition given your low-light requirements (concert/social). Overall, changing to full frame will require an investment in lenses as your current ones will reduce the overall image size to that of APS-C anyways with the A7 series.

If you want to buy both the a7iii and the 24mm 1.4 but can only buy one this year, then it makes more sense to buy the 24mm 1.4, for 3 reasons:

1) it's very hard to find it, so if you can find it, then please purchase it, it also means it's very easy to resell it at full price

2) you might be satisfied with the results our your current camera, especially for low light, and won't really feel the need to upgrade the body so soon

3) the a7iii might get a discount next year, but the 24mm 1.4 probably won't drop in price

accept no substitute.

(because of the depth of field)

you already have the 50mm 1.8, which I presume is the FF compatible lens, so you'll be ready to go right out of the box.

but you'll want to spend a few more bux and get the FF 85mm 1.8 as well. Great lens, cheap price. and it does make a difference for portraits

I would recommend getting that instead of a kit lens, if you have to choose between one or the other.

At the moment I'm thinking the 85mm although would be brilliant on the a7iii might be too close for concert pit work, but I agree it would be best to have 2-3 lenses before switching

I would wait the rumored Sony A7Siii is circling. I would say if if you can get by with the lenses you have then a new camera.

If you can save longer I might consolidate the kit to a macro lens for product photography

A 24-70 mm 2.8 GM

However, since you are on the verge of full frame I would look at Nikon and Canon and Panasonic since they now come to the table with Sony for full frame mirrorless.

Be sure you have the accessories you need for what you do and the variety.

They are worth comparing now before you get deep into Sony.

Then decide if staying or switching is best.

I will say for product photography a specific macro lens 1:1 will be very valuable. It also depends on you working space

**

I would also really look at lighting or flash they will come in handy

I’m so happy I joined this forum such a wealth of knowledge and such helpful people, thank you Len!

At the moment I’m thinking you’re all right, an 85mm or 24mm FF would be great for concert, product and my video work. After that I’d look into a macro.

It’s a brilliant idea to wait until the a7siii comes out even if just to pick up a cheaper second hand a7iii, I might be able to pick up a second lens with the money I save.

Thank you all for your help!

Pat

Changing to a full frame body turns all your current lenses into wider lenses (I’m sure that you know this). Assuming these are all full frame lenses?

If they’re crop sensor lenses you’ll gain virtually nothing from the upgrade.

Not sure what the 24 GM would add that you haven’t already got covered for glass?

Perhaps the new full frame body out of those two options, otherwise I’d consider something longer in the glass department.

24/1.4 on APS-C and 85/1.8 on A7iii and you are ready to go 😉
