EM1X is the best seller in Japan

Surprised how weak Canon is, it usually holds a 2-3 spots on the top 10 list. And Fuji is no show, that's not new though.
Not enough man bun wearing hipsters in Japan to support Fuji 🤣
That cannot be right all the Samurai movies I have seen have loads of man buns in them :-)

It is even vintage and man do those hipster chaps love vintage :-)

Those man buns served a purpose and they had better hygiene 🙃

I think some of us said "we need 6-12 months to see."

It's easy to have pent up demand or initial demand for a product just released. Just ask Nintendo and the Wii U. Or Olympus and the 4/3rds E-5.

It is new on the market.

Come back in three months and if still the best seller then Olympus has a real winner on their hands and has cancelled the production of all their other models :)

This is an outstanding niche model and cannot be the stuff of mainstream users - but for those that need a camera just like this then there is no other alternative .... No wonder it is selling well.
Its normal....? Every new camera dominate the most watched list on DPR until another new models is released......EM1X was the same......

What is really unique in this special case is after HUGE negative propaganda on this MFT forum and loyal Olympus posters bullied just for being optimistic and excited. And now this really positive report.....this is incredible news. I really appreciate your positive joy with the Olympus community Tom, great stuff!!!!
I think the problem here is not one of optimism, but of factual errors. For example, not all cameras follow the pattern on dpreview that you described (not that it matters much at dpreview).
Just imagine what will happen when the new EM5 MKIII is launched........ Should we expect record breaking sales?
If it's done right, maybe? That's what I am actually hoping- that they do it right so they can have that.

On the other hand, on Kakaku.com, where most people buy cameras in Japan because you get the best price, the EM-1X is ranked number 40 based on sales in the past week (the ranking is updated weekly)

I would argue that Yodobashi's data is intended to promote the camera. The idea that this enormous and expensive beast is outselling standard, cheaper and much smaller ILCs that cost $300 or $400 as well as cheaper fullframe cameras frequently selected by pros and aspiring enthusiasts is just ridiculous.

Or not. You are entitled to a wild guess.

Yes, my wild guess that it is number 40 on kakaku.com, which represents hundreds of stores and sellers.

Yodobashi does $6.5 billion USD/yr sales vs. Kakaku's $420million/yr. They're are in different categories.

EM-1X doesn't even show up in Amazon Japan's sales ranking. I scrolled down to number 100 then gave up. The top 20 is dominated by cheap Canon and Nikon DSLR kits.

On the other hand, Yodobashi is an electronic store, and cameras would only make up a small percentage of their overall sales. Having used kakaku for a number of years, I'm fairly sure camera sales make up a much larger percentage of their sales than Yodobashi.

Also, Kakaku.com is a comparison shopping website linking to hundreds of individual sellers and stores, so I'm not sure all its sales would show up in the figures you're citing.

Don't tell me I have to move to Japan now. I can't even speak Japanese.

What about somewhere like Canada, what are the figures like for there ..... aww hang on, that gets a bit cold in winter.

Ahhhh, how about Hawaii or Fiji, what are the figures for the camera there?

Come to think of it, what if I don't have to buy one, yeah I might just stay here thanks.

Danny.

Different clienteles. Yodobashi has 20+ large stores in Japan. The Shinjuku store is like a mecca for visitors. And Kakaku is not just for cameras, you can get a rice cooker there just as you'd with camera. https://kakaku.com/search_results/rice%20cooker/?act=Suggest&lid=ksearch_suggest_top

A bit unexpected but here it is, according to the Yodobashi sales data, even beating out a6400 released on the same day.
Wait till the buyers find out it has no creative dial... they will be returning the em1x (and the a6400) in droves.

If it didn't have a built on battery grip Would you(everybody) be calling the X a "Niche Model". It seems if there is anything Bigger coming out including the 1.2 lenses but not so much the telephoto lenses People seem to be Screaming in the streets.....

When did the EM-1X come out and when was it widely available? Seems like a wild guess.

Yodobashi is the fourth largest camera seller in Japan. They have 23 stores. And you have looked at a snapshot of their sales during the introduction of a new and unique camera.

Does this means the camera is a raging success? Or does it simply mean "Yodobashi sold a lot of them when they were first available for sale?" And what does this say about sales in other stores in Japan, or in Europe, or in the Americas?

I'd love it if the E-M1X was a raging success, but you cannot leap to that conclusion based on one chain of stores in one specific nation, for one very brief time period. Especially when it is only the "fourth largest seller" in that nation.

People constantly dismiss the Amazon Best Sellers list as being unreliable. And I tend to agree that it is a poor way to judge global sales. But even in Japan Amazon sells ten times more cameras than Yodobashi does.

In every format the very top bodies are logically niche products , by cost , size and utility the appeal of the E-M1X is for a very small group, even here on a forum dedicated to m43. The F/1.2 lenses again cater for a niche market. Take a look for example at the best selling m43 mount lenses from B&H, you need to do a lot of scrolling down to find any F/1.2 lenses.

I have no more interest in the E-M1X than I would in say the Sony a9 as the only areas where they offer performance above other bodies are of no interest to me personally. I do not need crazy fast fps or battery grips built-in or otherwise . The bottom line other than trick features which are of limited utility the E-M1x does not offer any benefit in image quality that is not already available in multiple other m43 smaller lighter cheaper cameras. Same Story with the Sony A9 away from its feature set it offers me personally nothing I value over much cheaper bodies
