In this guest column, plastic surgeon Daria Hamrah says that selfies are inherently unflattering, causing many women to mistakenly think they "need" to have their brows, nose, cheeks, or eyelids "fixed."

There are no solutions; only trade-offs.

The implication is that these women look terrific other than in their selfies and in my experience that is not the case. Previous images may simply have gifted them with careful light, posing, longer focal length, makeup, post adjustments etc.

Most people are not particularly flattered... let's say improved , through quick snaps in general. But we look the way we look. Obviously a wide angle lens at arms length ain't gonna help. If the women want to look good under those conditions then they may not be mistaken at all regarding having work done.

Truly attractive people tend to hold up fairly well in selfies. Then they get better.

I read about that a few months ago. Those Doc's are laughing all the way to the bank.

Interesting how social engineering works, and the outcome it has on trends. Some women go so far as to make their butts look bigger with implants.

And like any camera those alterations have pros and cons. In a decade, there will be a new trend and surgery, and you can bet, the marketeers will engineer that trend.

In the end its a win win win for everyone. The women will think they look better, the doctors and clinics will make money, and the rest of us can be entertained by looking at them for free.

The modifications will help them look more attractive in selfies, which for many people is reality. For those influencers who make their livelihood through selfies, there's quite possibly a robust return on investment.

The doc clearly doesn't comprehend that. Talk about paternalistic!

No it isn't. There's nothing in that piece that comes even close to suggesting it. For one thing, a plastic surgeon wrote it. Since when in the hell do they say all the women that enter their office look terrific?

A longer focal length isn't a gift. It is merely the right tool for shooting a photo at an appropriate subject-camera distance. I do like how you then intimate that selfies don't involve posing, makeup, or adjustments. I don't know how further from the truth one can reach.

They would be mistaken in having work done to cater to a perspective not viewed for more than a few minutes at most, while they spend hours a day interacting with people at a vastly different viewing distance and perspective.

Learning some proper post processing skills would be of much greater value...

Once you start cutting, slicing, sucking and filling yourself, you've entered a loosing battle. Just think 10 years ahead. And then another 10 year... etc.

Haven't seen much, that hasn't ended in a scary freak show.

MMV...
