Looking to upgrade my original Digital Rebel

i wanted to ask for your advice. I used to follow this forum religiously...20 years ago. :). I have been shooting with the original Digital Rebel with a max ISO of 1600. I shoot in Raw and process with Camera Raw and Photoshop. I would like to upgrade my camera with larger files, higher ISO and less noise at those higher ISO levels. I like to take indoor basketball pictures of my kids. I want to stick with Canon so that I do not have to purchase new lenses and flash, etc... I would appreciate any feedback or if you could point me to a relevant thread. Thank you!

Check out the newest Rebel, the T7i. It has all the improvements Canon gave to the Rebel line over all those years.

canon eos refurbished store for sure

$600 for the T7i, $50 more gets you the 18-55 stm

You're in luck. The current Rebels are way better and also cheaper. "Rebel" is now a line rather than a single model. The "i" models are the good ones, the non "i" are more stripped down, and the SL are the extra tiny ones. The T7i is the best current rebel, the T6 the cheapest, and the SL2 the smallest, what's your priority?

I second the suggestion of the Canon store refurbished models, you can save quite a lot and get a new camera. And one thing people don't always know about refurbs is that refurbs cameras are each individually tested while only the occasional camera from the assembly line is individually tested. So your chances of getting a DOA or defective refurb are nearly zero.

One bit of advice: kit lenses of today are vastly superior to the kit lenses of the time when you bought your Rebel. If you normally use the kit lens, I would urge you to consider replacing it with a current one. Also the current ones have silent focusing and IS, your old lens will be audible in video.
Also, prepare to be amazed once you get your new camera.

Another great option is the 77D (same guts as the T7i, but with a top LCD, AF-On button, and a Quick Control dial on the back). It's been selling for less than the T7i for the past several months...

I'm seeing them as the same price, but still, the 77D is a clear and nice upgrade from the T7i so even at the same price that's a much better deal.

I've had a 77d for about 18 months now, like it very much. It has much of what the 80d has, in a smaller "Rebel-sized" package.

But the new EOS RP looks so nice, and is priced so competitively, that if the OP has "the funding", I'd be looking at that !

(thinking about either an EOS RP or EOS R, myself...)

Well for indoor basketball (or any other action shooting) I would still recommend a DSLR. The EVF refresh rates just aren’t there yet (too much lag). Canon would need something like Sony’s A9 sensor TBH.

For general shooting though that RP sure does look good!
