Will there be a Pentax K2 DSLR anytime soon?

I missed the boat on any of the K3’s and don’t much like the look of the KP. It looks like Pentax won’t be going mirrorless anytime soon so wondering if a new APS-C Camera is on the way. I’d really like an upgrade from My K5 and am looking at Sony if Pentax don’t release something soon.

They're currently working on the K-3II replacement. No one knows if it will be out by this year or the following or even later. There have been a few hints about it possibly coming out this year, but there is no definite date yet. I'd be thrilled if it did.

The big CP+ show in Japan is coming in about 22 days from now. We'll probably find out something then, but knowing Ricoh, they might remain silent about it if it's still not ready. It's far easier squeezing water out of a rock than squeezing info out of Ricoh. :-P

Yes I'm sure there will be a new aps-c flagship. But when? What will it be?

Iirc, cameras are not announced long ahead of when they'll become available (except for the much-anticipated K-1) on the market. Definitely wait for CP+. I would bet on this year rather than next year.

If you have a few film era lenses, and don't mind a jump up in size and weight, do consider the K1ii.

Since you used the word "soon," you should probably go ahead and buy the Sony.

I can't imagine what you (anyone) could dislike on the KP. Together with the Olympus Pen-F it is the most aesthetic camera ever made, and otherwise it a a typical Pentax camera, i.e. excellent :-) .

People who use KP not for its looks but for photography love are enjoying its super image quality and handling for two years now while you kept waiting for the phantom K3. successor.

Unless you are a sports/action shooter or dedicated to burst, do take another look at the KP. I am very fond of mine and credit it with my recommitment to Pentax.

Frankly, I had one foot out the Pentax door when I was thinking of upgrading from my K-5iis- both the K-3s and even the K-1 all seemed like more of the same, only bigger and heavier. They offered me potential for improved IQ, but absolutely nothing in terms of shooting experience except more size and weight.

The KP is something a little different. Great sensor, fine IQ in a compact solid body that's built like a tank. ( It is small but not light-- I like to say it squats in your hand like a little toad-- but it handles well. You always know where it is and where it is pointing.) And I find that the third control wheel does wonders for its shooting experience.

I'm thinking of myself as a Pentaxian again because of my KP.

Probably. The fact they just released a new premium grade APS-C lens indicates they intend to continue support for the format. It wouldn’t surprise me if the replacement is a mirrorless in a K3 style body.

I hoping for a real retro Pentax looking APSC camera before my trip to Europe in April, what are the chances?
Seriously, the KP is exactly what you are describing: a great aps-c retro-looking camera. What's not to like?

Get the wide angle too, you won't regret it!

Ya, you're right I was just thinking of it's replacement, with a jump in resolution or something, trying to skip the current generation, I have a k50, k01 already. I have a 12-24mm that I'll be using on that trip a lot I think.

Hopefully there will be a K-3 replacement sometime in the foreseeable future. I wouldn't rule out the KP though. I didn't particularly like its looks or the concept either. Nevertheless when the price fell to below $700 for "Black Friday" & Ricoh's 12 Days of Christmas sale this year I couldn't resist. Its actually a very nicely designed camera, it handles well & produces very nice photos. While I don't really consider it a replacement for my K-3, I do like it I bought it mainly for the "pixel shift" feature & better low light performance. I'll probably buy the K-3 replacement the year after it comes out though.

That thought had occured to me as well. But with the K-3vNext probably coming out in 2019, I'd feel really silly to have waited for it all this long, and then bought a KP just months before the dream appeared.

OTOH, ias long as the new 'flagship APS-C comes out this year, I'm in a can't lose position. If it's everything I want, I get it; if it's not, I can always buy a KP. Win either way. And if it's something totally unexpected (an APS-C flagship MILC), then I still have good options.

I'm pretty optimistic at this point. We'll see what information CP+ brings...

K3II has undisputably superior grip, ergonomics, deeper buffer, 2 cards support and so forth. But KP is good in some ways; for kids.

Deeper buffer, yes. Since I got the KP I rarely use my K-3 because of the image quality.

At the time of the introduction of the KP, all Pentax really had to do was put the KP's sensor/image quality into an upgraded K3# body... we would all have been happy then... but no, Pentax just had to come up with something that was always going to divide the customer base...

Hi, 21William... I'm a LONG time Pentax user since my original Honeywell Pentax Spotmatic F that I ordered from a JAFCO catalog in the 70's. I still enjoy my K5-IIs yet, just this past Christmas Eve, I dipped my toe into the SONY pool. It was difficult as I almost felt like I was cheating on my Pentax gear but, the nagging thought of being a "Fan Boy" (which, in all honesty, I'd become) compelled me to give SONY a shot. The Pentax ergonomics are better and I didn't expect that they would be the same on the Sony going into it. They're not although, if I want an accessory, a lens or practically anything else, I won't have to fret that I might be dead before - or if - that item is released by Pentax. At times I think "Should I sell the SONY and just by a K1 MK2?" Heck, I could buy TWO with what I spent on the SONY body and lens. My thing is... getting over the "Old Dog, New Tricks" learning curve. In short, I'll never get rid of my Pentax gear as it's all good stuff and, it almost felt good that I was able to step out and try something new. Of course, Richo's lethargy over the years pushed me in that direction. :-)

Once they introduced the KP, there was no single camera that could be considered the "best" APS-C. The K-3ii was better in some ways, the KP was better in others. This was very unfortunate.

I think it's a mistake to say we would have all been happy with a K-3iii though. I certainly would have been, but there are far too many who would have considered it too little of an upgrade to bother.
