Favourite 4 compact travel legacy lenses for the A7 series

My set are a Zeiss ZM Distagon 35 F/1.4 - although not the smallest, its a great performer; a M-Hexanon 50 f/2, a tiny gem; and an Elmarit-M 90. If people are in the mix, I can use all three of these with a TecartPro focusing adapter, otherwise I just use a Novoflex M-FE adapter.

Do you use diopter filters on the 35 1.4?

If not, how is corner performance?

Coming back to your LTM kit, do you mind describing your favourite 3-4 lenses of those and what they qualities they have as a set in comparison to say your RF glass. Is it character/bokeh etc? They are still fairly compact so I am interested to know about this as a possible avenue...

In case you don't know it:

The entire site is a goldmine of information.

Thanks. I was actually just looking at that yesterday (great website and fellow Rokkor user) in that context and saw the review today of the 35-75 C/Y (which I saw from your comment you sold).. I don't use mine much except on holiday where I sometimes bring my RF645 or other film camera and I want a one lens solution on my A7.

Curious to know how the Leica Elmarit 24 Asph works with the A7 - do you have to post-process to get good results?
It works surprisingly well on my A7r which is far more picky than the A7, in this pic I added some contrast and boosted colour, there are no corrections applied.

The G45mm you mention looks insanely sharp but as I lean to more character lenses in the mid-range, in fact anything other than landscape (where I mainly shoot wide c. 15-24mm or long 85-100) I've never felt compelled to buy this one..
It performs very well in most all circumstances, landscape and street are where it shines.

Here a wide open shot to test WO sharpness and focus transition.

A Manual Focus Junky...
One photographers junk lens is an artists favorite tool.

####Where's my FF NEX-7 ?????
Firmware request:
-A button map for toggling the EVF & LCD
-Still waiting for the minimum shutter speed with auto ISO for my NEX-7 and A7r. I know it will never happen.
-Customize the display screen layout, I'd love to have both Histogram and level at the same time.
-More peaking options, being able to set peaking sensitivity and a threshold level.
-An RGB overlay on the histogram -An option to return the focus assist zoom to one button press
-An option to return to how the NEX-7 handled playback, ie. center button to zoom, then you could use the control dial to zoom in and out, then center button to exit the zoom mode.

Thank you for those - beautiful shots and I like the rendering. Do you use a diopter with that lens?

yes, an Optosigma 5m, edge ground by my optometrist to fit in a 49 mm filter mount - works brilliantly to flatten out the field curvature.

Thanks John - good to know! would love to see some more landscape shots taken with the 24mm (will give me something to aspire to when budget permits!)

Canon FD 24mm f2. Great lens and compact, one of the best wide angle lens s of the manual focus era.

Canon FD 50mm f1.4 Everybody loves it,i love it.

Vivitar(Kiron) 28mm f2 . My favourite lens in terms of character, great vintage/ somewhat filmic rendering. Surprisingly sharp wide open but just a bit glowy at f2,just like in those 80's music videos.

Canon FD 135mm f2.8 I love it for stealthier ,more discreet portrait shooting eventhough i prefer the fd 200mm f2.8 for that.

The Minolta 24/2.8 is a great lens! Also the C/Y 50/1.7, very compact and close to the modern Zony lenses.

I also have the Minolta 85/2 - if you like that the 135/2.8 is a no brainer. But the Contax/Zeiss 135/2.8 is better, but bigger and heavier.

How is the Minolta 35/1.4? I'm looking for a good 35/40mm lens from Minolta, the 35/2.8 I have is not close to the rest of the bunch.

I agree. the Minolta 24 2.8 was my favourite wide until the Batis came along. Minolta MD/MC do not have a 35mm 1.4. They had a 1.8 which was supposed to be quite good. The 1.4 I mentioned was the C/Y which is amazing. I have the C/Y 50mm 1.7 which as you say is very light so makes a good travel companion. Cheers

Ah, mixed that up.

Must have a look after the Contax/Zeiss but I remember it as quite expensive?

I will probably sell my Contax or Minolta lenses in the med. future and will complete the other set to keep one consistent set when I want to do a project with vintage flair/feel. Keep probably the Minolta set for that but would need at least a good 35mm and maybe a 50mm close to the C/Y 50/1.7.

Sensible move. I think the MC PG Rokkor 50mm 1.4 (which I have) is as sharp or almost as sharp as the C/y 1.7, better constructed and has as at least as good bokeh. It is a keeper. For 35mm, worth looking at the review of the 1.8 on rokkor files and elsewhere.

PS Yes the C/Y 35mm 1.4 is between $500-900 and if you can afford IMO it worth every penny but its not light or compact..

Thanks - will have a look after it!

I have the 58/1.4 which is kind of "dreamy" but less than the 1.2. Special purpose for me.

And a 50/2.8 which doesn't cut it.

Now I really looking forward to a nice 35/85 combi - that's all I need 80% of times to be honest 😉
