Would you buy an M5 right now?

I was looking into getting another body and was set on the M50 as it fits my 12.000 EGP (670$), but I strangely found a reputable seller selling the M5 + 14-45mm for the same 12.000.

I hear the M5 mark II is coming soon, so would you just wait it out if you have no "urgent" need for it?

Does an M5 represent a step up from my M50 in anyway?

I don't find the 4K on it useful in anyway and the tilt screen is preferred for me as it's usable as a vintage waist-level-OVF, which I CAN do on my M50 (and R) but having the viewfinder on a different axis compared to the lens makes the whole experience disorienting.

How more rugged is the body is it noticeable in the hand? Less plasticy and R like?

Is the EVF any faster in framerate or less blackout or larger?

I really can't find HANDS-ON comparison on how they FEEL side by side, and I put feel of the camera even before image quality!

Thanks.

I have the same dilemma, there are two reputable dentists nearby and both willing to extract all my teeth. One has modern plastic equipment and NUM the other, older metal pliers and and a bottle of whiskey. I can't make up my mind. It seems no-one these days can make a decision for themselves by themselves.

waiting has generally been my friend ... that said I've held both the M5 & M50 (not side by side, but different times) and the M50 is currently on my short list. If the M5 were on my short list and I believed that a Mark 2 was imminent I would probably wait for the M5 Mk II.

FWIW, I currently have an original M plus an M2 w/several M lenses but my favorite body is still my full frame 6D. I enjoy having an M to compliment my full frame.

M5 + kitlens is here also about the same price or even less than a M50 body only.

It's not yes. It's not no. The answer is both yes and no.

I bought an M100 for that. Only 185 euro after cash back, while it includes an OEM battery which can be used with my M50...... OEM battery = 40 euro.

If autofocus is critical to you just go with the M50. If not..... well, just try it in a camera shop, or order with a good return policy. The things you ask are hard to measure, and in the end it is all about your own experience.

The M50 is much newer, but arguably a lower model. As such, "better" is a term that can be applied to different aspects of both cameras. Size-wise and build-wise, they're almost the same. I actually liked the feel of the M50 slightly more (edit: I mean the materials, whereas the grip is just slightly more pronounced on the M5), but not in any significant way. Also, I believe that the EVFs are the same.

The processor in the M50 is newer and, as such, it has faster AF. By most accounts the difference is not huge. The M50 also adds a silent shutter mode, which some find invaluable.

The M5 has 4x as many control dials, though I don't find all of them to be that useful (specifically, the "Dual Function" dial is hard for me to reach or turn in one direction, plus is feels a little less solid.) The M50 requires a bit more button pushing. Basically, press the button for what you want to change, then change it with the one control dial. I would prefer one more dial on than M50, but people seem to get used to it.

I bought the M5 for the controls and because I got it like new for just under $400. I've thought about switching, but figure that I'll wait until the M5 II (if one comes out) to be out long enough for the prices to fall.

I bought an M5 back in september and i love it, its a great camera specially for stills. I love the way it feels in my hands and its probably the best designed body Canon has produced (in my experience) in this range of cameras. I can take portraits, take the camera to my eye and change everything without removing it.

The M50 might have some new additions, such as 4k, 720/120p and faster AF. But i would still buy the M5 over it today.

Without any need of an additional camera, I would not buy any camera.

Yes, in terms of its controllability and external material. But not substantially.

Basically, same here about 4K and tilting LCD. But sometimes I miss flip-out LCD, especially for selfie.

Do not compare R with any M. Even M5 feels plastic.

M50's EVF is a little bit better than M5 in terms of color or contrast.

IMHO, what matters is what you need.

I love my M5 and would not trade or sell it at this time. The M5 and 32mm lens combo is exceptional. That being said, if I did not own one, I would wait for version II. Canon listens to users comments and makes changes accordingly. In my experience, which is considerable,, the next iteration of their cameras is always better.

1. OK, notwithstanding that I need another camera like a hole in the head:

a. If the M5 is at a fantastic price (for me that is) - and price tends to rule in the end - there's no reason why I wouldn't get one. I've often done this - that is, I find some out of this world deals in which it would be very hard to say "no." to a particular camera.

b. Regardless if there's a replacement on the horizon, features aside, you will not see any differences in IQ levels. The M5 is a superb photographic instrument as evidenced by all those who use it. Other than some improved features and perhaps a few more MP's, you'd be hard pressed to see the differences in IQ quality.

c. In the end, I don't need an M5 because of the other (even if they are older) EOS M bodies I have - but again, if that M5 were being sold at a shut-out sale at prices below $400 USD or so, I may look at it.

I bought an M5 with no lens at the end of October. Included a bag and memory card for $575 from B&H. I thought that was a great deal considering that this body was about $1K a year ago.

The question you need to ask yourself is do you need the latest and greatest? Or do you not care? Only you can answer that.

I don't need the latest and greatest. And am a huge fan of saving money however :) .

The M5 addressed 2 of the biggest issues with the M's - autofocus speed and a built in EVF. Having used nothing but a smartphone for the last year I have come to realize that it wasn't as important as I thought. Go figure ;) ....

All the M's have very nice image quality and the M5 is no different. Though if you are expecting a huge jump in image quality you are going to be disappointed. I don't see it but some probably do.

BTW - the M5 is not metal. Some people keep saying it is but its not. Its plastic but its very solid so its not a big deal. None of the M's are as well made as the original M which was the proverbial brick.

If you don't need the latest and greatest - why not
