Appreciate any feedback.

I cant get my sb800 to work with my d850. It powers on. Camera recognizes it. Every time i take a picture flash goes off but its not recording in picture. I even stood in front of a mirror to capture flash bounce but nothing. In the manual it says the sb800 will work. I tested the sb800 on a different camera and works fine. I do realize its a older model but the manual says its compatible. I cant for the life of me understand how the cameras pictures dont pick up the flash. I tried manual, aperture and shutter setting. I can control the model light on camera and ill say again the flash goes off with each click. Can someone shed light on this.

Definitely a setting issue or maybe dirty contacts ?

My SB800 works with my D850

What are the flash settings on the camera? If "flash off" is set, it will not fire

Make sure the flash is pushed all the way into the hotshoe and locked. Sometimes it's a bit tight to get it all the way in. Other than that it'll be a setting on your D850.

It could be your D850, have you another flash to try out??

All of my SB800s work with the D850.

At first, they didn't work as well as I thought they would. But that was because I hadn't used them in a long time and needed to go through menus (which on these flashes, are not user friendly).

So things didn't work well until I hunkered down and went through the process.

One easy thing: at least one of my flashes was set to Remote. In that setting, it wouldn't flash unless there was something else set to Master (another CLS flash or a Commander unit).

Check your shutter speed.

Check you master/slave settings. If the camera is using the sb800 as a master with the master set to '––' it will preflash and appear to be working but will not light the subject.

I'm pretty sure you have your shutter speed too high. The SB 800 I think is one of the cheaper strobes (<$200) and those dont have HSS (High Speed Sync). So essentially you can't shoot over 1/250 I think.

It fires. I even set the shutter speed slow to try and blow out images. No flash pick up even with flash turned up +3 indoors at night. I also tried rear flash to see if the camera would pick up flash at the end of shutter nothing. The flash symbal is orange in view finder. Nikon said to hold down 2 buttons to reboot camera. Havent tried it yet.

The sb800 is HSS compatible but the camera would need to be set correctly (flash shutter speed synch). But that isn't the prob here. If the camera is not set to HSS then you still get a band of flash exposure across the frame as the curtain moves across - the faster the shutter speed the narrower the band as the gap between the two curtains is decreased. When the OP did a test shot in front of the mirror the flash would clearly show.

Update:

I think theres something wrong with the camera. Now it doesnt detect the flash when in hotshoe. Also when its attached to camera if i touch any buttons on flash head the flash fires( power button, mode button or sel button).

What would cause the flash to fire on hot shoe by just touching the button panel? Bad ground or hot shoe? Eeeh

I should note im not a first time shooter. I started with a fm10, n80, d70, f5, d700, d7100, d810 and now the d850. Flash worked flawlessly on all bodies without thought.

Well, i figured the flash im seeing is the preflash and not the actual flash. I put the flash on different body and it works. So the big question is whats keeping the sb800 from actually firing the flash?
