I've bought this great lens last week and after reading a lot about Macro photography, I think my next item could be a new flash.

Do you use a flash for macro with this lens and if yes which one?

I am thinking about a ring flash, or a more generic solution like a wireless godox system.

I've also seen, somebody used the original small flash combined with a with paper napkin :-)

Hi,

I son't have the 80mm but do shoot some macro. I use the small Godox TT350 and their X1T wireless commander for just about everything within its power range. To me, that's a more flexible solution than a ring flash. You can also add more flashes to your system if you expand later. Great value for money.

Ring flashes work well for even light distribution and getting in close. Sometimes that's exactly what's needed. At other times, that same even light distribution can be a curse. It tends to produce a rather flat (low contrast, direction-less) lighting. Natural subjects rarely look like that in the field - they're often illuminated by the sun, which is directional and typically somewhere overhead. They also produce circular catch-lights in eyes and sometimes off other reflective surfaces which can look unnatural. That's my take, but I guess it just comes down to what you prefer.

Be aware that the specs for the guide numbers of the current crop of small flashes like the nissin i40, Metz 40 and Godox TT350 are misleading. They rarely quote the GN with the ISO and lens FL at which the rating implied by the name is calculated. The rating is these days calculated at the maximum zoomed out FL and none of them are anywhere near 35 or 40 when used with a standard lens. They're even lower with a WA lens like a 16 or 23.

Hope that helps.

Cheers, Rod

I had the Nissin i40 but sold it because it did not do hss, wireless and wasn’t very effective in larger rooms.

maybe I should take a look at the godox one.

thx

Hi,

The Godox does HSS and wireless, but it won't give you any more power for large rooms.

Large room = large flash.

Cheers, Rod

Just adding a flash is only a part of the solution.

I own a ring light and avoid with it longer lenses due to working distances and light fall off.

A godox system will be better suited for macro given you mount the flash on a bracket and can play with angles. You don't need the most powerfull flash so a godox tt350 or two will give you most control over light and direction.

You can use small on flash softboxs that give bit larger and softer light source ( large nuff for macro).

The fastest macro solution and handheld for me is :

Wireless trigger on Fuji body and a slave flash on a 11" articulating arm mounted on the bottom tripod screw in thread.

You can however also get away for macro with powerfull ledlights like the LUME CUBEs.

Twan:

I am a loyal Godox fan. Have the pro trigger and 2 860's with the lithium battery. I use this set up for family portraits and special events. I will also be picking up the new 350 with a lithium battery for more smaller venues and group shots.

The trigger works flawlessly and the lithium batteries last forever. I have posted before on the benefits of Godox. You will not be disappointed. Sorry can't help you on ring flashes. I don't know anything about those as I personally do not need it.

Best of luck in your searches.

For shooting true macro checkout ring flash and LED lights which can be adjusted to provide modeling - for small subjects. There are also more expensive types of ring flash/LED to provide more light but if you're going that far then it's sensible to use (say) a 2 flash setup on which you can vary the light output and even spread the light. Godox appears to be the one to get but checkout others also You can buy a 3rd party low power ring flash - it doesn't need to be high power - very cheaply and perhaps get both types of flash unit.

Do you have a name of the arm so I can see what you mean?
This sort of thing: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Walimex-Flash-Macro-Bracket-System/dp/B0074ECUOE

or : https://www.amazon.co.uk/iwish-Univ...coding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=39QNWP2CVP77W21MBVMT

Adjust position and distance and power. You can use compact cheap low powered flash manual units - try old Sunpac units with a GN of f4 @ 15ft @ 100iso or similar. They'll cost not much more than pennies but they won't be ultra fast recycle.
