Hi,
I son't have the 80mm but do shoot some macro. I use the small Godox TT350 and their X1T wireless commander for just about everything within its power range. To me, that's a more flexible solution than a ring flash. You can also add more flashes to your system if you expand later. Great value for money.
Ring flashes work well for even light distribution and getting in close. Sometimes that's exactly what's needed. At other times, that same even light distribution can be a curse. It tends to produce a rather flat (low contrast, direction-less) lighting. Natural subjects rarely look like that in the field - they're often illuminated by the sun, which is directional and typically somewhere overhead. They also produce circular catch-lights in eyes and sometimes off other reflective surfaces which can look unnatural. That's my take, but I guess it just comes down to what you prefer.
Be aware that the specs for the guide numbers of the current crop of small flashes like the nissin i40, Metz 40 and Godox TT350 are misleading. They rarely quote the GN with the ISO and lens FL at which the rating implied by the name is calculated. The rating is these days calculated at the maximum zoomed out FL and none of them are anywhere near 35 or 40 when used with a standard lens. They're even lower with a WA lens like a 16 or 23.
Hope that helps.
Cheers, Rod
