*** New Wildlife Thread starts 1st December 2018 ***

Superb results New_Raj. Love the first one because of all the details and the last one is a real standout with that red plumage. What's all that white stuff in the air?
Haha, thanks Rodger. You'll be seeing more of that white stuff in subsequent posts of mine because it's starting to look like a "Winter Wonderland" here. :-)

Also, welcome to the RX10Miv club, looking forward to your posts.

Wow..excellent shots, New_Raj!!

Impressive detail, lovely colors...really impressive!!

Well done!

Keep them coming :)

Thanks for the nice comment and encouragement ANAYV. I will stop back with some more shots soon.

The birds were very camera shy today. I was only able to catch a couple.

Really nice captures, Jerry. Good compositions.

Question, when zoomed in I see artifacts, not that unlike i.zoom

Was Clearview zoom (or whatever it's called ) used? I believe its a form of digital zoom.

All of these images have these artifacts. Or perhaps these were all cropped quite a bit?

Not wanting to be picky, but i have a bad habit of zooming in to see the feather detail in just about every bird shot i see.

Doesn't take away from you or the really nice images, but I mention it, since i see it, and wish I didn't...just like some of my images.

When I under expose the FZ80 to get faster shutter speeds....often the noise creeps in..I can't help but see it ...and I don't like it.

Having the D3400 with it's excellent 24MP APS-C sensor doesn't help, as that can shoot at ISO 3200 and have less artifacts than my FZ80 at 800 :(

But I won't use my FZ80 at ISO 800...too noisy.

Help

:)

There are probably two possibilities. Yes, I might have had the CIZ turned on for these and secondly I added a little sharpening from FastStone.
I believe, like i.zoom that CIZ is the reason for what I see.
Here's a couple SOOC shots for comparison. I hope you clicked on the ORIGINAL file, as the DPR displayed file has lots of smudging.
Always click ORIGINAL SIZE Jerry. Yes, otherwise DPreview does something when images are posted here.
I also shot them through a double pane window as it was too cold to be outside today.
Not the artifacts I am seeing. But could be the reason for the need to sharpen more in post.
See if these have less artifacts.
They do..but are on the soft side. I see why you sharpened them.

Still...excellent captures, Jerry!

You are the third person I brought this up to...in the last few weeks or month.

I mean no harm...no finger pointing...just want to make aware what I see.

Thought I posted about using i.zoom a while back, but can't find the thread .

Think i will start a new thread , based on using i.zoom....EZ Zoo...digital zoom...and just optical zoom...maybe give samples of each, too.

I just to show using it, most times, it becomes a double edge sword. It allows for more reach, but at the cost of detail and artifacts.

Not sure about the Sony RX series, but with the Panasonic, they give you a warning, before you go past optical zoom, into i.zoom (same for digital zoom). Nikon does something similar. Forgot if Canon does.

Funny, how they don't show the bar on top, when you use EX or EZ Zoom. No need for a warning to let the user know I.Q. might take a hit ?

Really Panasonic?

Oh....perhaps because EX (EZ ) Zoom feature doesn't deteriorate the I.Q. like the other ways to get more reach does.

I see. that's why I promote not using i.zoom...but instead to try and use EZ Zoom.
Thanks for looking.
Always welcome Jerry. Hope i didn't offend...i didn't mean to.

Again, nice shots and good poses, Jerry!

Superb, especially that first one.

This woodpecker stocked feeding place is a gold mine. It's somewhat sobering that after a 600mm range and a 1.7x converter (so 1020mm?) and a 12MP shoot, the crop leaves me with 1.2MP. But at least it is obvious that it is somewhat windy.

In #2, I really like the contrast between the sharp, colourful bird and the defocused, neutral yet eventful background. Very nice!

Great image considering the focal length. Its handy to have a great spot like that. I wish there was something like that here.

Glad to hear this Jerry. Not everyone receives CC the same, I found out.

Folk like you and Rodger remind me why i love this forum!

I'm keeping my FZ80, just so i can stay here :)

We all have a long way to go, Jerry.

Time, patience, practice...sometimes we get lucky, too!

I do ..many times :)

Ever learning...

Thanks Didier. I do like the defocused snowflakes but if I get a chance for a shot like this again I may go for a higher SS and more DOF to capture some snowflakes in focus.

Wish you well, bassy...relax..refresh...enjoy the Holiday (if you celebrate ) ..but make sure you come back.

Yes, hope he is well. I forgot you've been around here a long time, bassy.

Cool.

Let us know what you think of the SX70.

I have a feeling the results are going to be similar as the FZ80;

Good features, control and speedy operation (though AF ..we'll see).

Good ergonomics, good lens range...perhaps even a good lens.

But I think it will fail in I.Q.....mainly due to the new 20MP sensor.

Those who experienced the SX50 and it's excellent 12MP 1/2.3" sensor..will wish Canon had put that sensor inside the SX70.

Just my thoughts
