*** New Wildlife Thread starts 1st December 2018 ***

Its amazing how they find their way around. Must have a GPS hidden in their feathers somewhere. Ha! That's a great sequence of images showing from when the penguin first appeared out of the surf, to its finding its way home.

By the way, the 3 pics is just a suggestion. On many occasions, like this, the story is better told using a larger series of images.

It has been a while, but coming back to browse through the forums led me to discover this interesting track. Thank you for this, Rodger1943!

The pictures below were shot with my trusted FZ200 + Olympus TCON-17 in a family-friendly natural area in Belgium (parking for bicycles, children playground, pub and restrooms available) with small groups of joggers, dog walkers and families kindly waving hello as they passed by.

#1 and #2 OOC jpeg + cropping and small adjustments in Picasa; #3 from raw using Silkypix.

Lovely images from your outing. My favourite is the first shot.

Great tit waiting for great spotted woodpecker to deliver walnuts. Great ones.

An interesting behavioural shot. Its interesting to observe these sort of interactions. Excellent image.

Well, it does not seem like much of an interaction: basically the great tit is just waiting for the leftovers. I've also seen a blue tit here, so apparently word gets around. I have not yet actually seen a woodpecker throwing out empty shells actively: somehow it seems to be mostly the tits who do the cleanup. Maybe a whole nut is too much to eat in one go? It would explain why I had a woodpecker drowsily hanging from the hammering place when I spotted it yesterday: it probably did so to prevent tits from taking the spoils before it was ready for a second helping.

I am still getting the hang of how to deal best with image processing using GNU/Linux. Using raw files, I have not yet created images better than the camera processed JPEGs. Frustrating. This one instead started from a camera JPEG (-2 noise reduction, +1 sharpening) but that leaves defocused or otherwise slow-changing areas too grainy for comfort, and the tit is out of focus. So the image is postprocessed with the GIMP's NL filter ("Non linear swiss army knife filter") in "Optimal estimation" mode which is great for leaving details alone while smoothing out spot noise in predominantly uniform areas.

The birds were very camera shy today. I was only able to catch a couple.

Pretty good results for "slim pickings", Jerry. I really like the first couple of shots of the titmouse? Great results in general.

Thanks Rodger. I am looking forward to seeing some shots from your new goodie.

Really nice captures, Jerry. Good compositions.

Question, when zoomed in I see artifacts, not that unlike i.zoom

Was Clearview zoom (or whatever it's called ) used? I believe its a form of digital zoom.

All of these images have these artifacts. Or perhaps these were all cropped quite a bit?

Not wanting to be picky, but i have a bad habit of zooming in to see the feather detail in just about every bird shot i see.

Doesn't take away from you or the really nice images, but I mention it, since i see it, and wish I didn't...just like some of my images.

When I under expose the FZ80 to get faster shutter speeds....often the noise creeps in..I can't help but see it ...and I don't like it.

Having the D3400 with it's excellent 24MP APS-C sensor doesn't help, as that can shoot at ISO 3200 and have less artifacts than my FZ80 at 800 :(

But I won't use my FZ80 at ISO 800...too noisy.

My State bird. Love seeing them. They can be timid though and spook easily.

This female stayed still long enough for me to get a nice profile portrait.

There are probably two possibilities. Yes, I might have had the CIZ turned on for these and secondly I added a little sharpening from FastStone.

Here's a couple SOOC shots for comparison. I hope you clicked on the ORIGINAL file, as the DPR displayed file has lots of smudging.

I also shot them through a double pane window as it was too cold to be outside today.

See if these have less artifacts.

Thanks for looking.

Great pictures of the cardinals.

We have some down here in Florida but I miss the ones we had in Ohio.

Superb results New_Raj. Love the first one because of all the details and the last one is a real standout with that red plumage. What's all that white stuff in the air?

jerry i wish you had said about the windows in the begining

that would have stopped me thinking these don't look that good to my eyes

Wow..excellent shots, New_Raj!!

Impressive detail, lovely colors...really impressive!!

Well done!

Keep them coming :)

I believe, like i.zoom that CIZ is the reason for what I see.

Always click ORIGINAL SIZE Jerry. Yes, otherwise DPreview does something when images are posted here.
I also shot them through a double pane window as it was too cold to be outside today.
Not the artifacts I am seeing. But could be the reason for the need to sharpen more in post.
See if these have less artifacts.
They do..but are on the soft side. I see why you sharpened them.

Still...excellent captures, Jerry!

You are the third person I brought this up to...in the last few weeks or month.

I mean no harm...no finger pointing...just want to make aware what I see.

Thought I posted about using i.zoom a while back, but can't find the thread .

Think i will start a new thread , based on using i.zoom....EZ Zoo...digital zoom...and just optical zoom...maybe give samples of each, too.

I just to show using it, most times, it becomes a double edge sword. It allows for more reach, but at the cost of detail and artifacts.

Not sure about the Sony RX series, but with the Panasonic, they give you a warning, before you go past optical zoom, into i.zoom (same for digital zoom). Nikon does something similar. Forgot if Canon does.

Funny, how they don't show the bar on top, when you use EX or EZ Zoom. No need for a warning to let the user know I.Q. might take a hit ?

Really Panasonic?

Oh....perhaps because EX (EZ ) Zoom feature doesn't deteriorate the I.Q. like the other ways to get more reach does.

I see. that's why I promote not using i.zoom...but instead to try and use EZ Zoom.
Thanks for looking.
Always welcome Jerry. Hope i didn't offend...i didn't mean to.

Seriously...so you seen it..but didn't ask.

bassy...your here a long time.

You know we all benefit from each other.

No one hear is mean,...no one here shows off...no one on this Forum thinks they arrived :)

We are all learning...but we are also a family...one who offers help.

How much help is : ' nice shot'

Or...to see something...but not say something.

Am I the only one taking risks, getting (*&$@@#$^^) for mentioning these things to others.

Maybe better to say something next time, bassy. Up to you.

But it makes me wonder why you commented what you felt, only after my post.

Perhaps not to offend?

Good reason...but sometimes the truth can set someone free. I know, not quite the best saying for this topic.

But, i'd rather someone told me my shortcomings, or show me the areas I need to improve, or even suggest a way to avoid, or just as I did, to nicely say what I see, in hope that it raises the level of the outcome of our cameras. Well, our pictures and enjoyment taking them.

I'm still working on that...and it takes a bit of work with the FZ80 :)

Adam T..many wont know who this is...but he was on my case...many times, showing me the flaws...telling me that ' the lens in that (Canon ) isn't sharp in the corners..don't pretend it is' ...that was perhaps in 2004. On my case now and again, correcting me.

Of curse he was an excellent photographer...inn the filed long time...i was pretty new to it all.

Taken back , at first, i then thought about it...and guess what...he was right!

Many times over the years!!

Couldn't see what he saw at first..but, for sure I am a better photographer...thanks to his , seemingly harsh comments on my photos...and my comments, my first 5 to 7 years as a learning photographer.

Thank you Adam T, wherever you are!!

Hope you take this the right way, bassy.....let's all still be nice...but also help and try to bring out the best in us.

Be gentle..but say what you feel/see.

who knows , it might help someone...like it did to me , years ago

It will still help, today, as I learn as I live
