Move away from FZ1000?

Jon and Bassy,

Thanks for your well written insights.

The price of the RX10MkIV will eventually go lower and will lose the "rip-off" (and similar) adjective(s).

If there will be no Pana equivalent soon, I expect many of FZ1000/FZ2000 users will jump the ship.
i'm not getting the rip-off label. I used to shoot sports with the 7DII. Did I consider the 1DX or 1DXII a rip-off because each cost three times the amount? Of course not. There are a lot of things in life I would like to have but believe they are priced too high to justify buying. Calling these items rip-offs is just sour grapes.

I believe that such adjectives like rip-off related to the Sony's RX10 lineup emerged because lots of people would never expect to be this type of camera, that is a bridge, so costly.

Also, the rip-off sounds probably too harsh. Maybe words like pricey, overpriced, dear, steep. high-priced should be used instead. ;)

“The FZ1000 was good for 80-90% of the photo ops there. The Canon was good for most of the rest, but even the Canon's approx. 900mm FL equivalents (with its 100-400 lens, 1.4X TC, and 1.5X crop factor) weren't enough for some shots.”

And that’s the problem with wildlife Bill. My Panasonic 100-400mm sometimes just isn’t enough. The only other factor is to up the megapixels and, I guess, that’s where some of the more recent dSLRs add something extra when combined with a long telephoto zoom. The RX will increase coverage of long reach situations but still may not be enough.

Whatever you decide, it does sound like, unless you buy well I advance, you could be struggling with the operation/handling of new kit while trying to grab the photo opportunities. Further, it seems that you should take the FZ1000 along too. The FZ1000 gives you short to medium cover, without needing to think about handling. The new kit to cover, perhaps, long to very long (by cropping). When shooting Puffins with the 100-400mm, it was very useful to have the 14-140mm, on another body, for closer opportunities.

Have a great trip.

noun. Sour grapes is the action of making something seem less important after finding out they can't have it.

i could afford to buy any of those cameras that you mentioned

no sour grape feelings or wanting on my part

"Rip-Off" my personal opinion

example

Sony A9 price

Let’s be clear – none of these cameras are cheap. That said, the Sony A9 is still cheaper than both the Nikon and Canon competitors. The body only retail price will be around £4,500 at launch, while the Nikon D5 can currently be picked up for around £5,099, and the Canon 1DX Mark II for around £4,799. You can also expect the A9 price to drop a little once it has been released. ...
FWIW ;-)

Here in USA currently at B&H:
Canon Mark IV (30.4MP): $2,799.00
Price includes:
▪ Canon LP-E6N Lithium-Ion Battery Pack (7.2V, 1865mAh)
▪ Canon BG-E20 Battery Grip for EOS 5D Mark IV
▪ SanDisk 64GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I Memory Card
▪ Ruggard Journey 44 DSLR Shoulder Bag (Black)

Canon 5DS R (50.6MP): $3,699.00

Sony A9 (24.2MP): $3,498.00

In "my" opinion the Nikon D5 and Canon EOS 1D X are specialty cameras with the HD build quality/ features that pro photogs want/ need.

Example the "Getty Images is bringing nearly a million dollars in cameras", lenses to the Rio Olympics" article HERE.

Someday when Sony has a proven track as Pro Canon and Pro Nikon cameras and same quantity of lens selection, they'll become more popular with the Pro photogs.

For Pros/ Advanced Amateurs when buying any ILC type camera they're not just buying a 'camera', they're buying into a 'system' that will provide a wide selection of lenses and camera accessories for their genre of shooting.

At this time Sony FF lenses are limited and cost as much or more than the equivalent Canon "L" lenses.

In the USA can save fair amount of money on Canon cameras and lenses by buying the Canon factory refurbished site; refurbished items come with Canon 1-yr. warranty.

Cheers,
Jon

Main point of my first post is cannot make a judgement on price alone, need to do a side-by-side specifications comparison.

Well "IMO" the Leica re-badge Panasonic cameras are overpriced just for the cosmetic changes and the "Leica" red dot.

Cheers,
Jon

"The FZ1000 true replacement is long overdo"

As stated on Panasonics Websites: The "true" replacement of the fz1000 "IS" the fz2500.2000, the next replacement will be for the fz2500.2000!!

I was told that using capital letters and multiple exclamation marks mean shouting. Do we communicate by shouting here on this forum?

Avian - I wasn't the person who brought up the use of capital letters and exclamation points. For what it's worth, most of the DPR forums (not all of them I've visited) are unusually civil, even when disagreements break out. Once in a while, there one or two individuals who draw themselves into a spitting match, usually through their sense of importance, and their view of their own (supposedly unusual) expertise. At the moment, there's a thread like that smoldering in the Nikon Coolpix forum. But that's unusual.

"Generally" yes; as with anything else it can be misused/ overused.

However words in caps can help emphasize main points of one's posts. Especially on this forum where (at least for) sometimes when a word in underlined and space between underlined word and following word not underlined is deleted conjoining the two words into one. When you go back to "Edit" post the space is there. :-|

Ever noticed in various documents key word(s) or paragraph(s) will be in all caps and/or all caps and bold.

Cheers,
Jon

You are right. It wasn't you. And it wasn't meant for you. Sorry.
