The reason I started toning (selenium) was to mitigate the warm blacks in the fiber-based papers - particularly Kodak papers. Oriental Seagull is wonderful paper but a bit warm but it's much better than Kodak. I finally settled on a Bromine paper call Brilliant which produced a print on the cool side of neutral.Excellent as always Truman. I noted your explanation about the selenium tone - as you'll have seen I usually use a warm tone reduced to about 25% - it began as a search for the warm blacks I used to get from fiber-based papers and I've got into the habit.

I normally would tone Seagull but often didn't need to tone Brilliant.
However, it really depends on the subject. I tend to be drawn to subjects that I feel look better rendered cool. The warmth or coolness of a print is yet again simply one more tool in expression.
