I'm a long time Nikon user and looking for a camera that is more silent them my DSLR D800. Anyone knows how loud the Z6 is?

I’ll speak to the Z7, but the Z6 should be the same. I can’t quantify it for you, but it’s definitely quieter than the D800 in flapping mirror mode. Turn on EFCS. The silent shutter is just that, but can’t be used in all circumstances.

Hey Jim, what do you mean by "but can’t be used in all circumstances."?

Thanks

For example, I don't believe the silent shutter will allow you to use flash.

I don't know about the Z6 but the Z7 is a LOT quieter than the D800. The D800 always grabbed the attention of people but the Z7 is hardly noticed. Also, if you want to be absolutely stealth then you can use the electronic shutter, which is totally silent.

Here is a video I made just today, the Z7 is triggered many times. Note that the camera is on a large wooden table in a room with a lot of glass and stone floor, but if I would have had it in my hands you would have problems hearing it unless you are very near.

Surprisingly quiet. It's the most quiet Nikon I've ever used, D700, D750, D800 included.

I'm taking a break from shooting a rehearsal with both my D800 and new Z6 right now. The Z is much, much quieter. Really a pleasure. I'm shooting EFCS, not silent.

...it is also a different pitch, not so dominating and attention grabbing as the D800. I guess the sound of the Z6 is the same as the sound of the Z7, after all, they have likely the same body and the same shutter mechanism.

I'm happy with the sound of the Z7. It's much quieter than a D800 and even quieter than a D810. I'm sure the Z6 is the same.

You should hear the Fuji X-H1 (or not hear). Now that is a quiet shutter. There's almost no reason to have a silent shooting mode unless you are really in a "must have total silence" situation.

Extremely quiet. I just got mine today. Much quieter than my D750. In normal mode it's even quieter than the D750 in quiet mode.

It might be quieter than my OM-D E-M1 Mark 1 too.

With electronic front curtain enabled it becomes even more quiet. :-)

Hi,

Just wondering, I am a bit confused now.

I see "EFCS enabled" and "silent mode" mentioned. Are these 2 separate solutions for silent shooting, or 2 different names for the same camera settings ?

Silent mode is 100% electronic shutter and all sounds are off (AF, touch controls and I don't know what else).

EFCS is electronic front curtain, so the second curtain is mechanical, and the other sounds are also on if you have it on in the menu. EFCS is enabled in d5. I think the default is OFF, so you have to set it ON if you want to use it.

Mechanical shutter is as the name says, 100% mechanical and all sounds are enabled.

EFCS is disabled if you enable silent mode.

Adding on to what Olyflyer wrote - EFCS reduces shutter vibrations and adds to getting pin sharp images, BUT - it only works up to 1/2000th shutter speed and does not allow you to go faster. For that you'll need to revert to the mechanical shutter. A pity that Nikon did not make this transition automatic.

Thanks for your response olyfleyer !

I looked it up in the Z7 reference manual.

p65 : silent photography : to enable the electronic shutter and eliminate the noise and vibration caused by operation of the mechanical shutter.

p233 : silent photography : select ON to reduce vibrations when shooting landscapes and other static subjects. Use of a tripod is recommended. Flash and long exposure noise reduction are disabled, as are EFCS and beep speaker, regardless of the options selected for custom setting d5 ( EFCS ) and for Beep options in the setup menu.

p258 : custom setting d5 : EFSC enable to reduce blur caused by the mechanical shutter.

To sum up, and some more questions … :

- there are 2 shutter systems ( how do these 2 shutter systems work together ? ),
  1. mechanical ( as in slr's )
  2. electronic ( how does this electronic shutter exactly works ? ).
- when silent photography and EFCS are both disabled :
only the mechanical shutter is active ?
- when silent photography is enabled ( EFCS setting d5 is not relevant ) :
only the electronic shutter is active ( mechanical shutter stays permanently open and does not close ) ?
- when silent photography is disabled :
  1. EFCS disabled : start capturing light on the sensor starts with opening the mechanical shutter. When does the opening of the electronic shutter occur ?
  2. EFCS enabled : start capturing light when starting the electronic shutter. When does the opening of the mechanical shutter occur ?
Thanks in advance for your responses !

Thank you JacquesC !

If shutterspeed is 1/2000 sec or faster , there is no need to use EFCS to prevent blur caused by the mechanical shutter. So yes there could be an automatic transition.

If I enable "silent photography" the vibration of the mechanical shutter is also reduced, the shutterspeed is then not limited to 1/2000 sec ( because EFCS is disabled in this mode ) , but then there is a risk to have IQ degradation in the final picture under certain lighting conditions or when panning or with moving subjects ( see p 65 in the reference manual ).

With electronic shutter the mechanical shutter does not operate at all and you should have zero vibration from that. I still have to experiment a bit more with it to see the extent of banding under artificial light, up till now it looks like my Fuji X-T2 was more resistant to banding with its electronic shutter, but I don't have it anymore so cannot really compare.

One of the reasons why I got attracted to mirrorless cameras was the electronic shutter - ideal for shooting when shutter noise is an issue. But I discovered with my X-T2 that I hardly had to revert to that because its mechanical shutter was very quiet (the X-H1 is exceptionally quiet!) and was therefore very happy when I discovered that the Nikon is almost as quiet - I simply love the subdued sound. On a recent trip in Europe I lost several photo opportunities with my D750 where I did not want to disturb the peace with a clunking shutter, that will not happen again with the Z !

Hi,

Thank you JacquesC.

Silent shooting is one of the main reasons I will step into the nikon ML ff system ( also ibis , better IQ , … , acceptable size and weight ).

I am glad to hear that the mechanical shutter of the Z6/7 is very quiet !
