The last time I posted in DPR i was happy with a new Canon 5D4 and 100-400II. 24-70 2.8II too. Expensive stuff. I've not followed anything in DPR or a long time because I have been satisfied. What have I missed that is the latest and greatest in new gear?

Sad to say, your camera don't work any more. You'll need to get something without a reflex mirror.

Imagine being Rip Van Winkle, except you wake up years later to find out you didn't miss anything.

...loud, shutter vibrates to wake the dead, minimal MP and did I mention massive and heavy? The lenses are slow to focus, do not have 10 way stabilization and are massive and heavy.

New gear will solve all these issues. Every camera is light as a feather, 100MP, 20 FPS at full resolution with OI ( ocular implant ) focusing, f1.2 lenses which weigh nothing at all made from optiminium, have bokeh in spades and are optically flawless.

No need to beat a dead horse. If you are going to settle for your camera you might as well be shooting film . At least then the cool kids won't think you are a dinosaur.

Well, I just bought my 5D IV in March 2018, and I keep it positioned in the house for quick access, in case an interesting bird or animal makes an appearance outdoors. The lens normally affixed to my 5D IV? My EF 100-400L II IS, of course, which I have had since about August 2016. This combination remains second to none. :-)

Some say the D850 is a better camera. Well, I bought a D850 in July 2018, and it is a truly wonderful DSLR, but my Nikkor 80-400G lens has a lesser Maximum Magnification, and a much longer Minimum Focusing Distance, so the 5D IV + EF 100-400L II IS is what I keep at the ready, when at home, and what I normally take with me on walk-abouts in nearby natural areas. (My D850 is usually paired with my Nikkor 28/1.4E.)

I hear/read the EF 24-70/2.8L II remains as relevant as ever. I tend to prioritize fast 35mm prime lenses, so have kept my older 24-105L, and recently added an EF 35/1.4L II.

Yes, Nikon recently announced a Z mirror-deprived system, and Canon then announced an EOS R mirror-deprived camera sytem, but either would be a step-downward/backward from your 5D IV. Welcome back, and, relax, as your gear is still good to go. :-)

I wore a police badge and pistol, and made evidentiary images at night, incorporating elements of portrait, macro, still life, landscape, architecture, and PJ. (Retired January 2018.) I enjoy using Canon and Nikon gear.

Well, Canon is dead. It nearly died a little while ago because it didn't have a full frame mirrorless camera. Then it released one and was temporarily pulled back from the brink. But then people noticed it only had one card slot so now it is really dead.

Nikon is dead. See above.

It would have been easier if Canon and Nikon had actually merged and become Canikon before dying - would have saved a lot of wasted web traffic. But they didn't and now they're both dead anyway.

The entire compact camera market is dead.

Micro four-thirds is dead.

Olympus is dead. See above.

Panasonic is nearly dead. See above. But they are about to release a full frame mirrorless camera, so are about to be pulled back from the brink. But people will realise it only has one card slot, so it will be dead. Even if it has two card slots, people will find some other feature it is missing, like 18K video at 422 FPS, and fly into a moral outrage. It will then be dead.

Pentax is dead, but you already knew that.

Sony isn't dead, but it will soon enough get bored with making cameras, just as it got bored with Betamax VCRs and VAIO computers and discmen and minidiscs. Then it will be dead.

Leica and Hasselblad are still making cameras. They each sell one every second or third year when a Saudi prince or wealthy heiress gets interested in photography. They will never die.

Wow. A serious, considered, sensible and useful answer. Well done that man!

The biggest change is that I got a 5D Mark IV as well, and love it!

Nikon updated their D810 to D850, and it’s fantastic, 48mp with lots of dynamic range, but it won’t take Canon lenses, so...

Sony’s updated their full frame mirrorless twice.

Apparently, the Sony is a wonderful camera, except that it seems to transform some owners into remarkably obnoxious individuals who need to prove that they have a better camera. It’s quite odd. I don’t think any of them ever take photos of anything but cats, but they talk a lot about zebras.

Just a bit of trivia to brighten your day.

Zebra is singular and zebras is plural. And a collection of zebras is called a "zeal" or a "dazzle". https://www.google.com/search?q=wha...alled&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-1-ab

So perhaps it is safe to say these cameras have "dazzled" their owners. They certainly exhibit a lot of "zeal" for their equipment.

the good news is that Samsung might be making Full Frame sensors.

On second thought, that could also be bad news.

OK, Samsung is dead or soon will be.

There are only half as many threads on the use/non-use of UV filter.

A. C.

The m43 section is unbelievably noisy and they talk a lot more about other sensors than their own for some reason.

Hasselblad hasn't made a stellar wooden grip worth 5k in a while, too. The whole industry is still waiting with bated breath on that.

Relative to the competition, Canon's moving backwards.

Wait, that's not a change; it's more like the status quo.

My bad!

You are new and yet not unknown...

You missed a very important announcement from Pentax. In a last-ditch effort to keep their DSLR sales going amid the onslaught of full-frame mirrorless cameras, they are going to make adapters for all brands of lenses to fit their DSLRs and will include them for free with the purchase of any of their DSLRs. I understand the adapters will be offered in 43 different colors.

That is really silly ... I dont think there will be 43 colors.
