The subject came up on another thread. I'm in the midst of photographing gear for sales. Thought I'd share a few fun size compare shots. These are full resolution so have fun zooming in. Converted from RAW saved JPG7. Shot with a99II+70-200G2 1/3ss f16.

E and A 85/1.4's

Guess which one is most fun to use.

A99m2 probably, unless you enjoy the nostalgia of the Minolta. Curious as to why you have the Velcro on the side and top of the a99m2? Hold down the flash?

Personally I don't see the difference. Yes there might have been difference in the beginning and the size argument would have been valid, but with current gen of f2.8 e-mount lenses that difference is almost gone. Yes technologically mirrorless is making leaps every other day; but if the same R&D was pushed behind A-mount things would have favored it. A99ii is a living proof of a very good camera with limited R&D behind it; that could have been the best only if it got the same attention as A7riii or A9.

Hi,

I made simply size comparison of my dream camera A55 FF vs the only actual FF Sony A-mount camera A99II.

Weight:

A55FF: 500 g

A99II: 849 g

I do not compare with lenses because they would be the same on both cameras.

I know it's very unlikely to happen. This is just what I would like to have and why I follow all the discussions about the new ML cameras.

As you can see the A55 was almost the same size as A7III so why not an A55FF :-)

I have fun to use the A58. The handling is still better than A7 series. But I also find that the A77 body size is the sweet spot for me. Not too little, nor too huge and handling is just excellent with or without the grip. For this very reason the A99ii fits me perfectly.

I am wondering how tiny hands one must have, to feel that little soap-dish's grip comfortable.

For me even the 99ii s ergonomics is only acceptable with the battery grip attached. No i have not touched one, but as it is the same size as the a77II with grip, i will stick to my a99 as long as it lasts.

Wow, if A99ii is not okay for your hands ... You're very unlucky I'd say... My hands are tall (I'm almost 2 meters high) but not on the bold side neither.

But if you're not comfy with A77ii/A99ii + grip, then you're totally screwed with MILC. I suppose that even the new Nikon, that I welcome for its bigger size, won't fit you neither :(

If only sensor manufacturing wasn't supply constrained 10-15 years ago. Imagine if Minolta, being a latecomer to DSLRs, would forgo APS-c and built a system exclusively on full frame, possibly Canon 16 megapixel sensor of EOS 1DsII for 7D and 9D and a previous generation 11 megapixel sensor for a 5D.

I know I would have done that if I had a billion dollars and a time machine :D

Should have said okayish about the a77II/99II.

So that will be my next step im sure, but the a99 with its grip is extreme comfortable for me, never touched anything close to its perfection. :)

Thats my a99 with its grip, and my swine-herd hand:)

Indeed.

OTOH I think the real plus of this grip is the 3 batteries.

It’s not about the hand size but as a traveler and hiker I prefer small and light camera. Do you think I am the only one (last one) in A-mount camp?
If you want little body, I think you're totally ready to switch to e-mount.

The size and handling of those MILC is exactly the reason why I'm not switching.

You might be one of the last.

Up until recently I used my A55 for travel and hiking, and thought it was great. However, this year I bought an RX100III (used, but excellent condition) instead to carry on a family trip overseas. I tested the heck out of that camera for months before the trip, and it became clear that it is capable of the same image quality as my A55 + 18-55 SAM II. Look at this example:

The interesting thing, though, is that the RX100III is the same size as just the battery charger for the A55. It literally fits into my shirt pocket. The other compact camera in our family is the similar sized HX90V, which has a 24-720mm equivalent lens. That one is great for well-lit scenes requiring a long zoom reach, and it has built-in GPS. As a result, I don't have much reason to carry the A55 around anymore.

For photo projects in or near my home I continue to enjoy my A77 and a bunch of A-mount lenses. The size and weight are no problem at all for those purposes.

Whereabouts in the UK was that shot?

This means almost nothing, using different length lenses per body.

Compare each with the same "length" lens. Since between Sony, Tamron, Sigma, Minolta and any other adaptable lenses, any given focal length can be in various different lens lengths. Probably too many to test.
