WOW...did anyone else notice the huge amount of tog's that were covering the England/Croatia match?? The entire field was completely ringed elbow-to-elbow with cameramen. I don't recall ever seeing an event with that many photographers on the sidelines. They must have been passing out credentials for free in the park. I would think they would have put a limit on the amount of guys they let on the fields...had to be well into the hundreds.

Good match too :-)

As a Scotsman I appreciated every photo of an agonised England supporter :-) Joking aside I think that Gareth Southgate and the team had an excellent tournament and exceeded the expectations . Lot of young players in the squad , who are still to develop their game to its peak , i think this England squad will go far in the coming years.

Sadly the way things are going for the Scotland national team I think I have more chance of becoming head ballerino with the Bolshoi ballet { and I am a middle aged ,15st ,6"4"" , former rugby player :-) } , than they have of qualifying for a world cup :-(

I kept looking to see if any of them were field testing that Sony 400mm 2.8 but couldn't see an orange ring.

They were almost certainly turning people away. It is the World Cup - the most watched sporting event in the world.

England were lucky to have reached the semis playing half decent teams. Their media created a lot of hype around a very mediocre team.

They are nothing compared to the likes of Germany, Brazil, France, Italy and Netherlands. Even Belgium is better than them.

As a Tottenham supporter I had a bit of understandable enthusiasm for England, but while I agree they had a good tournament and there is a lot of potential for further development, the outcome on Wednesday was entirely deserved. There is no quit in that Croatian side and they turn it up to 11 for as long as needed.

Our keeper is still in it though. Go Hugo.

Photographic content: my dream sports shot would be of first class football: an image of a keeper diving at full extension, captured at the moment their body is parallel to the ground. Facial expression could be intense, funny, or both.

On paper, sure. But as they say, you don't play on paper. Gotta play the games and see what happens.

Not to mention the two that didn't even qualify for the tournament.

It doesn't matter, there's plenty of space around those ad boards. And the wall-to-wall media exposure is good for the world cup.

If you really think getting credentials is easy for the 2nd most important sports match in the world, why don't you try it?

What's watched by more?
I thought the leader board was

1. Summer Olympics

2. World Cup

3. Tour de France (also biggest annual sporting event)

But that might have been ranked by spectators present. Not tv audience. If I'm right it's stitch up. The olympics isn't one event

I can't find a source, if I'm wrong I'm wrong. This sort of supports me but misses out the Tour.

According to this the Tour is around 10 million but with no ticketing it's hard to know

I've heard people say thay can get a million on Alpe d'Huez

Not really understanding your logic there.

Italy and Netherlands didn't qualify in the first place

Germany didn't get out of the group stage, Brazil went out in the quarters.

Always amusing when someone tries to argue that the results don't actually count

Would have been my thought, too.
1. Summer Olympics
But to be fair, while thinking a bit more about it, the Olympics is a different kind of event with a multitude of different kinds of sports...
2. World Cup

3. Tour de France (also biggest annual sporting event)
...while these two are very, very, very large single sport events.

Comparing them is an iffy task.

Wait and see...
I hardly ever speak for anybody but myself. In the cases where I do mean to speak generally the statements are likely to be marked as such.

2nd most important match?

Which would be the most important match, assuming you mean match, thereby excluding the Olympics and other meet-ups, and not event? And by which criteria? It can’t be by simultaneous viewers...
