1D still amazes me

Are you referring to the minusG_plusR.TCD curve?
Yep.
If so, are you
sure that it's a bluish cast and not a green cast?
Actually, yes. I don't know if I should say "shadows" or rather "lower midtones" though. The files are lacking yellow. The red that was added is a rather "cold" red, not a warm, "orangy" red... not sure if that makes sense...
If you're
interested, try the below slightly revised curve and let me know if
it helps the cast in the shadow areas.

Thanks a bunch. I'll try it as soon as I find the time and report back here (maybe not this week though).

Thanks

Welcome back, Ned. I lurk here mostly since I have a lowly 10D. I wish I could afford a 1D. You and Adam T. and others make me envious. I've considered selling a couple of lenses to get one, but Adam says to wait to see what's next down the camera pike.

I've amassed a nice collection of lenses and some credit card balances, but several were gotten used at a savings. Welcome home.

It's not been too long ago that Diane mentioned to me how much she missed some of the veteran forum members and brought up your name.

Stefan,

I made what I think are further improvements to the previous curve to retain the original tonality so please try the following curve instead when you get a chance.

I've been using my 1D for motorsports photography since May, and I am quite impressed with how my keeper ratio has gone up. More importantly, I get incredibly sharp shots with details all the way through the shot if I have sufficient depth of field.

But, with respect to color....I have some questions. I shoot in JPEG-Large/Coarse, primarily to get enough shots on my cards, and Inotiice from time to time a slight greenish-yellowish cast to photos that I do not see on my D60. I find I have to do a bit more levels and curves work to get neutral images than I do with the D60.

I've heard that JPEGs shot with the 1D tend to do this, but RAW files look wonderful. What's everyone's experience.

Ned, your chopstick photo looks great on my newly hardware calibrated monitor. Was this shot in RAW and converted, and if so, what did you use for conversion?

Adam-T, Juli, DavidP, what's all your guy's experiences?

Yep, there is a Custom Curve to sure this By Antonio - Can't rememeber his surname (Laguna?) on this forum , he posted recently in another thread

I NEVER shoot JPG anymore with the 1D unless shooting commercial for webshops where it speeds the workload as it just doesn't realise the full potential of the camera - None of the DSLRs without an AA filter at all on the sensor have JPG mode (the Kodak DC520/560 Canon DC2000 6000, Sigma SD9 are RAW only) and the 1D has a VERY weak one - I don't know if this is why it responds to RAW Far better than the 10D or D60 (which makes very little if any difference detail wise when shot in RAW) but the 1D surely isn't at it's best in JPG mode. It also cures the Green problem..

Hi Stephen,

My chopstick sensor cleaner shot (supposed to be a little photo-joke that only a few seemed to get) was just a quick 'n dirty shot using my 1D, 28-70mm shot in JPEG Fine.

For 95% of my normal work which I always shoot in RAW mode, I use Chris Breeze's Downloader Pro & Breezebrowser for my conversions. I've been using Breeze for quite a few years and have been really happy with the results and the fantastic support & upgrades that he provides. (In my case) since the majority of my work is covering events, when I get home I'm more interested in a quick and efficient workflow to convert, proof and print the hundreds of images I typically shoot. Downloader & Breezebrowser works great for me in this regard and I should add that since my 1D images are usually dead-on colorwise I don't typically spend much time doing alot of post-processing.

Hope this is useful info.

Hi Juli,

Nice to be back and recognize a few old friends. Coming back to these forums was like returning to your local bar that you hadn't been to in a few years. You hardly recognize anybody, but the talk is about the same issues - only the model numbers have changed, LOL.

Very much so.

I also have BreezeBrowser which I like for reviewing images as an image viewer, but have just (yesterday) started taking some test pics in RAW.

I think I will use it for the time being as I have it. I, too, like it very much, and like the support Chris provides. BTW, for printing contact sheets, I haven't found anything faster!

Stephen,

I couldn't agree with you more about Breeze's contact sheet printing capabilities. I recently did a big and tiring 10 hour wedding in Napa Valley and had over 1,000 images I needed to produce proof sheets for. Setting up your parameters for printing contact sheets is a "breeze" and the contact sheets (all 80+ pages) printed out without a glitch.

Napa Valley?

Where do you live? Maybe we can hook and up shoot sometime.....or get together and chat about photography.

I live in Albany in the East Bay and am up there all the time. I grew up in and went to High School in St. Helena.

I concur. Totally!

Hey Stefan,

Thanks for the link on the greenish-cast discussion Rob Galbraith...very informative and helpful. And interesting reading, too!

Thanks for pointing me there!

Stephen.

Hi Antonio!

I finally got around to try the curves you made. Thanks a lot for them.

I liked MK. II the best, but still not quite there for my liking, so I took the liberty to modify it further (thanks for pointing me in the right direction - that Canon software really is sooooo awful).

I'm pretty pleased with the results, at least in matrix 3. I've uploaded a comparison with the 1Ds if you're interested, please find it here:

; (1.4 MB)

Some may say the 1Ds still looks warmer and more pleasing to the eye, that may be so, but looking out my window I can tell that the 1D rendition is actually more accurate. What I need to do now is create a custom curve for the 1Ds, too, to try and match them, or at least bring them a little closer.

I also tried "my" modified 1D curve yesterday in totally different weather (dark, rainy day) and it looked pretty good as well.

If you want to see what I did, here is the curve: http://www.stefan-schott.de/dpreview/amtlich.TCD

The crops were shot with the same lens within a few seconds of each other. And please, nobody say anything about the resolution, the 1Ds shots were downscaled considerably ;-)

OK, thanks for your help and let me know what you think.

Cheers
Stefan
