Hi All

Old Nikon Shooter here.

Will Nikon's 1st mirrorless be a D850 in Mirrorless clothing I hope so.

Or will it be a entry level?

Will have to be a good camera to compete with Sony I can't wait to see it.

Anyone else intrested?

Just posted a few of my old Nikon shots at the link below.

Been sorting out my old photos and files.

Cheers

Rob

Just imagine they launch both together (DX and FX)...

Much better… because all old lenses will work, with sophisticated help.
Anyone else intrested?
at least one person :-) .

Hi Robert
Thanks Stan

Liked your answers.
I am only 100% sure about 1 part of my answer, which might as well be "nice shots" or "at least one person" ;-) , another part is what I expect.
Cheers

Rob.
Kindest regards,

Stany

I wouldn't be surprised if they followed Sony and had a D850 like model and a D750 like one.

Perhaps the biggest unknown will be what kind of lens lineup they go with. Personally I think that Nikon could learn something from Canon's success with the EOS M relative to the Sony E mount. The latter was far more established but was generally geared to poor quality budget lenses and expensive upgrades, Canon didn't have any like the lens range but by offering food quality cheaply they overcame this.

I think Nikon could have some success with this at FF, offer for example a 24-60mmish variable aperture zoom with good performance and a 35mm F/2 prime on release and you've already targeted two key weaknesses of Sony.

You could argue getting the basic lenses right on mirrorless is actually more important than with DSLR's because its not just price but also size that holds off people from upgrades. If people are having to buy a massive 24-70mm F/2.8 zoom to get good quality in that range its going to defeat the point of any size saving.

Because it (obviously) won't have a mirrorbox and will have a different lens mount, it probably will look more like other MILCs and less like a DSLR. There are speculative mockups over on nikonrumors.com.

Any idea how many times this same old thread gets recycled?

I hope it doesn't look like this :-)

I think they will aim the first salvo at neutralising the A7iii which appears to be rocking the boat at the moment.

I'm very curious about it too

Yes I'm interested, not so much to buy one outright, but to see how Nikon (and Canon) will approach mirrorless on a more serious scale. Both have been in mirrorless, Canon with their M line, and Nikon with the Nikon 1, but both companies appeared to do so with very little enthusiasm or appetite for it.
I am quite sold on mirrorless after having used it for several years now alongside my DSLR's and actually much prefer using it over a DSLR accept for a few things:
  • AF performance not up to DSLR standards
  • Responsiveness (start-up time, wake from sleep, etc.) not quite at DSLR level
  • Some EVF lag (less bothersome to me as I don't shoot sport very often)
  • Battery life not as good, although Sony appears to have bridged that gap
Whether you like mirrorless or not, it is going to be very interesting to see how this whole saga develops. Almost time to get the popcorn, grab a seat, and watch this fight!

Been wondering this myself. I was kind of thinking, the only way I'd go Nikon ML would be if they came out with a D850 model. The D850 is just about everything I need in a camera, but I wish it could be a little lighter. I'd love a ML D850 that's about the weight of the D7500.

Nikon should probably take their best-selling models (D850, D750, D500) and make ML versions of them, and maybe throw in a reasonably-priced DX model. That's a pretty tall order, though! So, we'll see. They must be getting close to an announcement?

This hits the nail on the head for me. I have shot for a few years with a GX8 with some nice Voigtlander primes and Olympus zooms. I really like the viewfinder. And I really like the smaller size. But when the camera goes to sleep, it's very slow to wake up, at least in comparison to a Nikon DSLR. It's slow to wake from sleeping out of shooting mode, but if it goes to sleep while viewing an image on the display, it's doubly-bad...have to wake it once, which gets you back to the image you were viewing, then you have to wake it again (half-press shutter) to get back to shoot mode. And it doesn't seem sensitive enough. I'd like just a little nuzzle of the shutter release button to cause wake-up, but sometimes it seems to not respond, even to a fairly strong press.

The biggest problem, for me, with mirrorless is that I miss the SLR way - press the shutter release and an image happens <50ms later.

When the new Nikon FX film-less mirrorless cameras arrive at the local Nikon Pro dealer. I will eagerly board my horseless carriage, and travel along mudless, gravelless roads, to see this marvel of engineering. Hopefully, the journey will be a stressless, incidentless trip, on a rainless day.

If I find that the new Nikon FX filmless, mirrorless camera is entry-level, the visit will be joyless.
