Ive the MacBook Pro mid 2014 build purchased 2016 and past several months its been over heating.

Anyone else experience this?

Maybe im pushing it too hard with large files?

Cheers

A little more detail on ‘overheating’...

actual temperatures? iStat will tell you what they are.

area getting hot?

fan speeds?

Cpu usage when hot?

I think it's a norm. My 2015 15" can start the fans whirling even though only Firefox is open with 1 tab & that is just google search. LOL!

But 1 thing I learn from the forums, don't put a protective cover over it. Many users I read mentioned that the thermal design of apple laptops sucks, the aluminum body actually acts as a heat sink to dissipate heat. So if you put on a cover, you are actually shortening the lifespan.

Better to be safe than sorry, I don't put one on mine. :-)

same as what silentstorm mentioned.

maybe it is the norm?

just seems to be heading up and the fan cranking for simple task such as using the web whereas before I would edit large files.

May be just dust clogging the fans. The thing I would be concerned about is any sign the battery is getting too hot.

Mine was brand new, no fans to clog. It's an erratic behavior. Sometimes it just whirl up for nothing intensive & sometimes I can just watch 1hr of u-tube videos w/o a sound.

I don't look into it too much as a problem. As long as the laptop doesn't crash or stall, I let it do it's thing.

Edit: Come to think of it, maybe the laptop is doing some kind of indexing or virus scanning in the background. Or could be apps searching for updates. I wouldn't worry about it if the temp doesn't get too hot.

Spotlight indexing can make it work quite hard.

It has been looked by a Mac tech at the local apple store.

I guess Ill just see if it continues to behave the same and get it in the Mac store again just before warranty expires.

Thanks all.

Cheers

If by overheating you mean the fans come on, and if you go into Activity Monitor you see a browser using a lot of CPU... What has been happening is that some websites have been using our computers for bitcoin mining... Other websites are simply poorly done and have processes or ads going crazy (nouvelobs.com never fails to do this, for instance). Security add ons like uBlock Origin and Disconnect have helped me get them under control with Firefox.

So it's not so much the macbook randomly overheating as specific websites playing havoc with computers in general. As has been mentioned, there are apps like istats that tell you the actual temperature.

Open the activity monitor and look at the processes causing CPU load.

I had a 15inch Macbook pro from around that era, It often overheated with lightroom and even just watching youtube could get the temp upto 105C according to SMC Fan Control app. I took it into apple a few times and they were clueless, said its not an issue and I should swap from lightroom to Aperture as it's better. I ended up selling on and getting a later version with the same spec, this one had no problems. I later heard from a friend of mine who had the exact model that there was a recall on the model I had and they'd swapped his.

I have a spring 2013 macbook pro and it overheats regularly. I push it with adobe Lightroom going from file to file. When it gets too hot, I let it cool for a minute or two. I use Istat pro which shows the temps of CPU and GPU. I think the fan starts about 150 degrees and I've had the temps up to190 or so.

I doubt I have dust inside but have not had the laptop checked.

So you have been working since 2013 in a filtered cleanroom? ;)

I do not have that problem with my 2016 15" MBP. Mostly browser and LR Classic running at the same time so I may not be working it as hard as you do. I have my catalog and pictures on an external drive too.

1. Open it and clean the dust out of it, especially the fan area.

2. Do not block the exhaust ports when operating...find out where they are.

3. Use Macs Fan Control to control the temperature of the computer.

Not sure if you got the problem fixed. But I to was having an overheating problem. Mine was getting hot enough I didn't want it sitting on my lap and to the point where I turned it off for fear of really messing something up.

As someone already suggested I opened the activity monitor(previously had no clue what this was) and was amazed and at what I saw. I had several programs(no clue what they were) running at 200% or higher. I closed those and you could feel the temp start to drop and return to a normal operating temp. I monitor it regularly now.

Not sure if it will help you but I figured I'd share. Hope you get it fixed.

My 2013 MBP fan was running all the time at one point and constant spinning wheels and sluggish lightroom performance.

I took it into genius bar, they checked the list of running processes and that was ok. Then they took it to bits and cleaned out all the ports and fans - it was full of dust. They also cleaned keyboard, outer shell and screen. Since that visit it has been running silent and lightroom is running smooth again. They charged me nothing. Excellent service by Apple.

I just took my macbook in for dust removal. The tech said there was some on the exhaust vents but not crazy. After the cleaning, it still heats up very quickly when processing photos with Lightroom.

I have a 2007 17" MBP and in the first instance, the battery overheated so much that it expanded and I only noticed there was a problem when the touch pad stopped working because the battery was pressing on it from behind. They replaced the battery free of charge.

A couple of years later it happened again. This time they would net replace it for free and it cost me £100. It continued to run hot.

This laptop will now not run CC so I have bought a new 13" MBP and it runs quite cool.
