Generic MB-D18 battery grip for the D850

Interesting. I haven't bothered updating my firmware because the few things Nikon said were fixed seemed inconsequential to me - but I'm not impressed if Nikon has screwed over the generic grip manufacturers by altering firmware.

I almost suspect that someone could win a lawsuit against Nikon for taking away functionality with a firmware 'upgrade.'

I was able to get 9 fps with the original firmware on my McoPlus and DSTE grips - WITHOUT having the small battery inside the camera.

So far between this thread and the one at FredMiranda I have yet to have anyone confirm they can get 9FPS with a generic grip when they have updated their FW for the camera.

If anyone with 9FPS working and on FW 1.01 could confirm this is possible that would be great.

Also need to see if it is the newer FW blocking 9FPS, is it only with aftermarket batteries in aftermarket grips OR does an OEM battery in an aftermarket grip work on the new FW.
A member at FM contacted Thom Hogan who published a report of the Vello working with some aftermarket En-El18s. Thom said his tests were with the latest 1.01 FW so that is one report now that it may not be a FW issue.

Thom's article in case anyone wants to read his aftermarket grip/battery testing: http://www.dslrbodies.com/cameras/the-d850-blog/vello-bg-n19.html

I have to correct something: the STDE battery combo does NOT give you 9fps, only 7. A generic 18 battery with the DSTE grip and battery chamber cover runs a splendid 9 FPS EVEN with FW 1.01!!!!

Forgot to mention: WITH FW 1.01 upgrade!!!!

Thanks for the info. Now we have a couple confirmations that the FW isn't blocking the 9FPS.

Another member on FM has the Vello and can't get 9FPS but is using a very old EN-EL18 clone from back in the D4 era. Same thing Thom Hogan found with some of his oldest clones. So newer EN-EL18 clones are needed but there are lots of ones out there confirmed to work. Although possibly the new FW is blocking more of these than we think and some earlier reports of some working were still on 1.0 FW??

I can confirm that the Bevik MH-26 charges the OEM Nikon EN-EL18b battery. Also I am getting 9fps with the Vello grip, OEM EN-EL18b battery and DSTE door. 9fps both with and without the OEM EN-EL15 battery in the camera. Camera firmware 1.0

As promised (if anyone reads this) I can now report from personal experience that all DSTE brand grip stuff works flawlessly with 9fps (EN-EL18 only) Btw, it’s an amazing sound to hear the camera shoot those 9fps, like a machine gun.

To fill the grip one has four options:

1. AA batteries (holder comes with the grip) no 9fps

2. EN-EL15(a) batteries (holder comes with the grip) no 9fps

3. EN-EL 18 (a or b): DSTE sells a battery with a battery compartiment cover attached to it. (Non separateable) That cover is also a charger and comes with a power cord and a car lighter cord. Gives you 9fps

4. EN-EL 18 (a or b): any generic or native Nikon battery will fit in, though one needs to buy a separate battery compartiment cover to keep the battery in place. I have a DSTE one, don’t know about other brands, though I suppose if they are properly copied they will do too. It is very easy to adapt the AA battery holder to function as cover. Just push an EN-EL18 in firmly, so that it slides into the contacts, measure the remaining space and cut the AA holder to size. And presto, there’s your DIY battery compartiment holder. Gives you 9fps

Although I would have preferred a magnesium alloy (like Nikon’s native grip) aftermarket grip, like I had for my D800 series, this one feels very sturdy and well made. No wiggling room between the camera and the grip, the look and feel are as one unit.

Last but not least: I could not find the battery/charger cover combo on Ebay or Amazon, but fortunately retailers in my country (NL) sold them. All the rest I purchased on Ebay in China and it arrived within two weeks.
I bought a DSTE grip, and a Nikon EN-EL 18 battery. It doesn't appear that I'm getting the 9 fps though. I did notice that under the settings for the MD-B18 that all were listed as AA batteries.

I feel like I must be missing something obvious. Ideas? TIA.

Thom Hogan noted that if you don't attach your grip VERY tightly, you might not get 9 fps. So try pushing hard upwards towards the camera in the area where the electronic connection attaches between the camera and the grip at the same time that you turn the screw plastic dial thingy to attach the grip. (and turn the dial/screw attachment tightly)

Err the obvious is you should have bought into a OEM grip instead of wasting that money on chinese junk, Sorry..

Thanks for your reply, but it's simply a cost-benefit analysis. I've used a similar grip (Meike) for my D500 with excellent results for over a year with excellent results. This is a different manufacturer and does indeed feel cheaper. The 4 to 5 times cost differential is up to the consumer.

No problem. There was speculation that the new firmware update might disable 9 fps with generic grips - but that was just trying to figure out why some people got 9 fps with the same generic grip, and other people didn't. I'm pretty sure the problem has been solved that it's just screwing the grip in far enough that the electrical contacts REALLY connect. (firmware version doesn't seem to make a difference - but many people were trying to figure out why)

I was able to get 9FPS with the following setup:

DSTE grip

DSTE endcap

Wasabi battery

I have the DSTE charger and it works fine.

I am on FW 1.01

I've been using my 3rd party grip with Wasabi battery like a bandit. 9 FPS and no issues whatsoever, except the buffer fills up fast on RAW.

Works and feels perfect. What a huge rip-off the OEM grip is. I've been using 3rd party grips since my D700 and no issues ever!

Hey, if people want to pay 400 bucks for a battery holder, more power to ya!

"if he would've simply bought a OEM grip from the start..."

Wow. You're a little clueless, aren't you. The whole POINT of this thread is that the Nikon grip has been IMPOSSIBLE to buy - ANYWHERE.

And it makes sense that you don't listen when someone like Thom Hogan speaks ....
