New 2D to replace 1D

The 1Ds is not in the same league as the 1D when it comes to sports and PJ photography. The 1D and the 1Ds occupy very different niches.
David:

You must realize that your 1D was the #1 camera up until a year
ago. Since then the top spot is called 1Ds.

I have been predicting the 1D replacement along these lines for
some time and got booed, but it makes sense.

John

I think of the 1D and 1Ds as Canon's TWO top of the line cameras. Each does what the other can't.

Until they truly have ONE camera that "reigns supreme", I think they'll continue to call two of their digital bodies -1 series. Even if both aren't full-frame.

I guess we'll see!
I'm just saying use a 1 series body and call it a 2D. That's leave
out the confusion people have about "which is the top of the line
camera?" You might be right though, perhaps 1 series just means
the body, but marketing never works like that so you never hear
those words out of Canon's mouth (that I can recall).

Maybe it's some sort of strange plan to have similar names for competing products? (Nikon D2H and the putative Canon 2D?)

Maybe the term '3D' has too many other connotations that might confuse the public? Would it be really stupid for someone to think that a camera named '3D' would be expected to take 3-dimensional, holographic pictures?

Only Canon's marketing department knows for sure...
Good source informs the new replacement for the current 1D will be
the 2D, however this is all the information they would tell me.
Unsure about any other camera spec's.

You've said this before and I don't agree. I'm sure there are many people using the 1Ds in the studio, but there are plenty using it for all kinds of other things - travel, weddings, interiors, exteriors - maybe not fast action stuff, but pretty much everything else!

If Canon intended it for the studio only, why use the weather-sealed body anyway?

Cheers
It'd be silly to make a cheaper camera with the 8FPS where the
weather sealing IS REALLY NEEDED, not in a studio camera like the
1DS..

Because the only other option was to use the D60 body? ... the 1-series body was there and needed minimal alteration to take the full frame Sensor/viewfinder mask as the mirror box is full size on the 1D anyway (the viewfinder is masked out) - less in the way of R&D and the camera gets to benefit from all the other important thngs a 1-series offers such as the rotary magnet shutter, extensive customisation, large LCD, 3-LCD setup, operational controls etc etc etc

I suppose it was bad wording to call it a "Studio" camera but I bet that's where most of the Pro bought ones are and you won't find many in the hands of PJs in their normal line of work and I bet that not many have had their weathersealing put to the test either..

for canon to combine the 1D and 1Ds features into a single body.

Now on the other hand, Canon as position itself to maybe get two sell in stead of one for thos photog's that need both feature sets for different types of shoots.

just a thought.

"I heard from a store sales person, that heard from a Canon rep, that Canon will release a 1DS at PMA in February. The "S" is for "studio". The camera will have the same build as the 1D and most likely have a 6 MP sensor (probably CCD) and a slower frame rate. It will be priced about the same as the 1D."

Hehe, close, but no banana!

They got the megapixels WAY wrong, too.

And the CCD vs CMOS.

Ken,

I'm curious why you feel the need for WA technology in Canon Pro Cameras?

Canon has already demonstrated that the 1D is the fastest writing camera on the market, even faster than the Nikons that support WA.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but who needs WA support when Canon can do it better already without having to pay for the liscensing to brand something with WA technology. Canon hates using "outside" technology and having to brand their cameras with it. (Think THX certification. Many have better technology but getting THX cert. requires releasing your patents - who wants to do that?)

Andrew
... if somebody says that a 2D will REPLACE the 1D, I'll call them
a fool ... but I could be wrong ... they may just be ignorant!
All I want in the new 1D is a clean ISO 12800, 72 frame buffer (two
rolls of film worth!) and ten frames per second at six megapixels.
And WA capable firmware.
Don't care about 1.3x or FF ... either way.
Ken

on a per-pixel price it was about right! LOL!
