I'm in the market for 100-400 lens for mostly wildlife. I owned Canon 100-400 II but sold it a couple of years ago.

I'm not serious about paying $2k for 100-400 II so those are my options.

Good condition Canon v1 is about same as new Sigma/Tamron.

Any thought?

Thanks in advance.

I have 6D and 80D.

make sure you get a 'good' copy of the 100-400 (not one from the 90's)

I had the Canon 100-400L v.1 for about 6 years. Took great photos. I purchased the Sigma 100-400 last summer. I found the Sigma to be a bit sharper at 400. I also like the customization available through the dock.

If the Sigma did not meet my expectations, I would have bit the bullet and purchased the Canon 100-400L v. II. But, Sigma is 1/3 of the price.

One thing , Sigma is f/5-6.3, Canon is f/4.5-5.6. I do miss the wider aperture of the Canon sometimes.

Both images taken with Sigma.

Why not 90s? Do you mean it is too old?

Pulled a trigger for Sig 100-400 C when Adorama had it on sale with USB dock a couple of weeks ago.

Yesterday, I tried briefly with M5, 80D.

No issue with M5.

AFMA +4 at 100mm with 80D.

That's all.

IQ is much better than expected.

AF speed is acceptable.

IS(OS) is not as good as Canon's but working .

It's 1/3 price of Canon 100-400 II.

Great deal.

No tripod collar.

Zoom ring location is uncomfortable.

Maybe, I got a good copy, but...

I'm happy!! Period!!

if the Tamron performs almost as good as Canon but 1/3 the price then it's a winner
