I've been birding for 20 years, and about 7 years ago started carrying a Leica V-Lux 4 as a fast/light camera mainly for record shots. It's a decent solution if the light's good and the bird sits still for the 15 seconds it takes to zoom and auto-focus, but for anything moving, forget it. So I finally decided to up my game and settled on the 7D mk ii with 100-400 IS ii combo (a combo I'm confident is right for me). I went ahead and bought the 7D mk ii, paying close to full price (cause, well, that's basically the price everywhere). Now looking for best deal on the lens.

The 7D has just arrived and is now sitting in my closet...in the box...unopened. Why? Cause I just caught up on rumors of the Mark iii! My question is: if the mk iii is coming out this summer, is now really the time I want to go with the mk ii? Either option is certain to blow my mind coming from my V-Lux, but since I've waited 7 years I can wait another 6 months, at least to get a better deal on a clearance mk ii if not to avoid buying soon-to-be-outdated tech. If time is not of the essence, should I keep the mk ii or should I wait a bit to see what develops?

It's impossible to say. The 7D3 could be announced tomorrow, or it could be next year. It could be the best upgrade ever and a new classic, or it could be just an unexciting incremental upgrade. Either way it is sure to be a lot more expensive.

See:

Why not have it both ways? Buy a used 7D2 now, buy a new 7D3 later if it turns out to be the winner we are hoping for. The value of the used 7D2 will plummet once the 7D3 is released but if you find a really good used price now it won't be too big of a loss to sell it later. The Fred Miranda Buy and Sell Forum is a good place to get great, well cared for used stuff.

How about sending back full price body and get a refurbished from Canon? If you're worried about best deal cost-wise get an 80D. I just bought a while ago a 7D2 refurbed and glad I did

Yes I thought of this.

Somewhat tangential question: why the substantial ($500) price differential between 7D2's with WiFi adapter kit and without, when the standalone WiFi adapter can be purchased for only $40? Since all 7D2s started being packaged with WiFi kit about a year ago, i assume these 7D2s without the WiFi are older cameras, but other than than I'm really confused at the big price difference.

Consider the source: some never heard of vendor selling through Amazon. They are apparently charging whatever they think they can get away with. I would only buy from recognized places like B&H, Adorama, Hunts, Roberts, and Amazon Prime (not third party places) in the US.

so you are spending a lot of money on the 100-400 IS II and looking to saves pennies on the body..it is actally amazing..

if you need the camera then just use it and enjoy it..there will be always a newer camera comming out...who says it will come out in 6 months..actually some say in 3 months..but i personally think it will come out next year...but why waiting?

More like hundreds. The 7D III will come out at close to or maybe slightly higher than the 7D II was when it was released, which IIRC was around $1,800. Current price for a new 7D II is around $1,500 and refurbs are even lower.

I agree that always waiting for the latest & greatest could lead to just waiting...and waiting.

I don't think spending a lot on a lens has anything to do with wanting to save on the body. And I'm assuming it would indeed be hundreds once the Mark iii is released.

I too agree that "always" waiting is pretty stupid, but this is a specific instance, I've got specific circumstances, and I certainly don't "need" the camera. I assume most would agree that, if an announcement on the 7Diii was 90% certain within 3 months, then it would kind of be a no brainer to wait. So people are really opining that the likelihood of an announcement on the 7Diii within the next 3 or so months is substantially less than 90%. And most others on this forum have much more experience on these "rumors" so I will defer to you on that.

All of that said, I'm leaning toward keeping the 7Dii and just enjoying it...

If it is an either/or situation, I would certainly pay top dollar for the lens, and cut corners on the camera, rather than the other way around. That 100-400 will still be state of the art after you have gone through the next 3 generations of sensors.

CanonRumors posted (Jan 11th) that they are not convinced an EOS 7D Mark III is coming in 2018. I guess only Canon knows.

Does Canon announce new releases always on trade shows (CES, Photokina, etc)?

Ya know we heard the SAME rumors from the same sites for 3 years, 36 months, 1095 days) before we saw the 7DII. So yea WAIT and WAIT and WAIT. year after year, its only time you could be using the 7DII and the 7DII is very very worth the upgrade over the 7D. The refurb is a great idea :)

Ya know what they say about a bird in the hand.

Scenario 1: If your creative juice is flowing daily and you're absolutely convinced Canon is the path to follow, pair that 7D Mark II body with that EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens and start shooting. Get a battery grip, too.

Scenario 2: If you worry about getting a better deal -- dollarwise and gearwise -- and you have not at all invested in Canon lenses, I kindly suggest you look at the current market offerings. Look at the Nikon D500 and the Sony a9. And, yes, other manufacturers make and sell excellent lenses, too.

That's awesome :)

IMO...if it is a 7DMKII then you will be set for the rest of your life...it`s sort of like a German 88mm...non plus ultra...all depends what the specs tell us for the new 7D MKIII

I think the hupla is fantasy, because digital cameras have reached their peak...

Good luck and may your decision make you happy

Greetings from Berlin

Matthias
