G9 Review - Gordon Laing

Awesome. Thanks for that update as I look forward to his reviews. I find them really helpful in making camera decisions.

Thanks for the heads up BB. Shaping up to be a darn nice camera.

I thought one of the outstandi g features of this camera was its ability to to run it from a portable power source via tge usb port. At 20.16 gordon states that this was incorrect. You can only recharge the battery via usb. Very dissapointing for time lapsers.

He is looking into that because the manual is quite clear that you can run the camera on usb power but you do need to have a battery in it and the battery must not be flat. He thinks that when he tried it the battery was flat which may well be why it didn’t, work for him.

That is a relief, this was a feature that would make me buy the camera.

Looks like you CAN power camera with external battery.

With all features from G9 in a range finder body. Hopefully Panasonic haven’t cut the GX single digit line.

Three things he said are a worry for me and may push me to wait on this until more people have reviewed it.

1) He said that during C-AF with DfD active, the viewfinder "wobbled" a lot and he could not tell if his shot was in focus. I don't find this happening with my Pen F, though I admit I usually use S-AF as the Pen's C-AF is pretty much useless.

2) He said that he measured the IBIS as 5 to 5.5 stops with Panasonic Dual IS lenses, but only 3 stops with a non-Panasonic lens. Now I do have a few Panasonic lenses (the Leica 8-18 and 12-60) which are my go to lenses, but I use the Olympus 75-300ii for a long tele and get 4 to 5 stops on the Pen. Do I need to spend the $1700 on the Leica 100-400 to get the better IBIS?

3) He wasn't really clear on if he thinks this is better at sports/action than the E-M1ii, which has the PDAF on chip. I tend to think that the Olympus would be a bit faster, but not necessarily any more accurate, but I did not get any real idea from him.

These are all issues that I would like to figure out before making a $1700 purchase...

yes wobbling off putting wonder if this is due to the no blackout showing previous frame at 20 FPS ,also my omd em1 mk2 often shows sharp images in viewfinder in c-af only to find when examined closely they are not sharp ,

he said 4 stops on the 75mm

That should be good news.

If for some reason the USB port does not allow long term external power for time lapses, looking at the bottom of the G9, it does have the circular cable passthrough door in the battery compartment. That little door on my G85 (which lacks USB power) allows the use of a power coupler that can be fed by a USB battery pack or AC adapter for time lapses, which works great too.

If the USB port can be used for external power, then the G9 will have two external power options: The USB port, or the more expensive power coupler through the battery compartment. If the USB port can't do it, then at least you can still use a power coupler. One way or another you will be covered for external power.

+1
I'm hooked on the rangefinder format. Even though I've spent the last 45 years shooting medium format or SLR. The RF format just feels more comfortable to me.

Digital / Mirrorless technology pretty much frees one from the SLR design. I suppose I've got kind of a big schnoz, so being able to shift it from the body makes for a better shooting experience,

But maybe things are getting a tad crowded in their lineup at this point. I really hope there's a GX9, and at this point I actually hope it doesn't get significantly smaller - ever since I realised that a large part of the reason it handles so well is actually partly an aspect of the size.
I wouldn't want a GX9 any smaller either. It's about the perfect size I think, and I've got fairly small hands for a bloke.
Yeah, I've come to admit this with some resignation.

The thing I still can't shake off in theory is the sensor vs size aspect: Stuff like e.g. the 15mm + GX8 = basically the same size as a Q, and a compact midrange DSLR + 50mm 1.8 = pretty much the same overall bulk and weight as GX8 + 42.5 1.7. But again, I've come to accept that decent handling comes at about this mass / size.

This is exactly my feeling as well, I can't explain exactly why.

The reps do know their products. Confirmation of USB charging with battery in the camera is shown in product manual.

Great news here. I commented on his first part 1 of 3, but cited Ben Fix's discussion with a Panasonic rep. See this video

I would take what the rep says with a grain of salt. They are paid to talk up the camera, not give an unbiased opinion. I appreciate people like Gordon Laing as they are independent and tell it like it is.
