6Dmkii Problems - Expecting the Worst!

After having a few errors with worn contacts on my 5Dmkiii I decided it was not worth risking yesterday's wedding without a second back up. So picked up a brand new 6Dmkii as a temporary but suitable fill in.

Although I had a good couple of hours to test it out on Friday I started spotting some shapes appearing on just some images taken with the sigma 50mm. A quick google led me here to discover that the lens correction was not playing ball with sigma I soon turned all off and all sorted....

I was pretty impressed with the camera so ended up shooting most of the wedding on it.

I have now sat down to a couple of thousand RAW files and having updated PS and LR to recognise the files I am met with what may well be a nightmare!

Every file has two lines of oddly coloured pixels in the same places on every one images regardless of what lens. Please can someone put me out of my misery and tell me this is not a sensor issue and just a software thing.......

You ill notice the line through the E and then another vertical near the right. While it is not that visible full view, on many it's through faces and much more noticeable.

Any thoughts? Do I have a PS marathon ahead of me?

Link seem broke or file missing...but from your description, a hardware/sensor issue needing replacement

Link here.

A canon response was along a similar line and said just send it back. Which would be the end of it if I had no need for a camera tomorrow and hadn't just shot a day's shoot of damaged image!

Looks like I am headed in to grab a 5dmkiv this afternoon and stick with what I know!

In the meantime, use Canon's DPP.

The RAW files show a dimmer column containing B and G pixels. This can be fixed by a custom MATLAB code easily.

You may want to post this to the PST forum. There are few people there which could write a code to fix it. I am not sure that they would want to do it but you can try.

Odds are this is a manufacturing defect that somehow got through quality control checks. There is no indication this is an issue with the 6D MarkII, nor is there any guarantee that a 5D MarkIV might not have a similar problem, as small as the odds may be. Why not ask the retailer to exchange the 6D Mark II for a new 6D Mark II?

Thanks for the replies.

So there may be a method that does not involve many many hours of cloning and PS work. That is a glimmer of hope! What is the PST forum you mentioned?

+1 It won't fix yesterday's images, but it would be much quicker than sending it back to Canon for repair.

Ended up returning and swapping for 5Dmkiv, having used 5D bodies for years it made sense to stick with what I knew, albeit more cash. Just feels so much more like what I am used to and buttons all where my fingers are expecting them to be!

Plus it's all my local shop keeps in stock and two shoots this morning to get to.

Now to solve the image issue!

Can't help you with the image issue, but I returned my 6D ii for exchange 2 weeks ago because of a similar line across the image but landscape mode. Mine only appeared against dark backgrounds. I posted a similar thread here then.

So there is definitely some issues with (probably) the sensors.

Hi Colin

Landscape mode? Is that one of the intelligent automatic modes on the 6d2? How is it accessible...I tried finding your link?

I'd be interested in taking a look. I'll download your test image and get back to you.

No, sorry. I just meant the line went across the frame parallel to the longest side (yours is parallel to the shortest side - portrait mode).

That sucks. Oh dear, looks like we are going to hear a lot more about this.

Okay, a convolution filter in Gimp removes the line easily and it's completely scriptable. You'd just need to convert the CR2 to TIFF first, because Gimp can't read CR2s natively and ufraw doesn't support the 6DMkII yet.

Good tip for an older camera, but why would anyone want to live with a defect like this on a brand new camera (presumably under warranty or exchange period) and have to edit every photo for years to come ?
