I see that BH have two brands of cover for the big Canon telephoto lenses. Reviews are variable. Any options other than Lens Coat ? Anyone happy with other brands ?

Yes, these guys. I have one for my DO2 and my 100-400mk2. Better than Lens Coat, if you ask me.

Lenscoat is just ok. Years ago, I bought them for my longer lenses like my (departed) 500 mm. It was great. Recently (last 2-3 years), I bought them for my 300 f/2.8 ii and 600 f4 ii and they are just ok. The material cuts aren't right, the windows aren't straight, etc. (yes, I bought the proper models for the lenses). Quality has definitely dropped off.

I had one for a 300 2.8 ll. Cuts were rough, uneven. Sent it back. Used to scuba dive with the police team. Never saw such poor fit on neoprene before. Have a 200mm as well. Haven’t found any cover for it. I do use lens coat for tripods and wimberley 200. They are fine.

I have a lenscoat for my Canon 300 f2.8 II. Fits pretty good, but getting the coat over the hood was hard to do, it was a very tight fit.

And it's over priced, too.

I bought some neoprene and made one myself that I am quite happy with.
How did you get the edges to join together?

Did you use duct tape?
40-odd years ago I used to do a lot of caving, and at that time a wetsuit worn under overalls was the standard kit. They never lasted long so I made them (and did the frequent repairs) myself. All the joints were glued, I don't think I ever stitched any of them.

Then 20 years ago I got into white water kayaking. I bought a couple of wetsuits for that but still had to do the occasional repair and once again glue was enough. There'a a brand in the UK called Black Witch, which is nothing short of miraculous. Duct tape was used for running repairs only.

However - I've never made a lens cover. We have a couple of manufacturers in the UK who make good products for less than Lenscoat prices, and IMHO it's worth the cost to save all the fiddling around needed to get a home-made one just right.

I made mine in about an hour. The are much simpler than a wetsuit. I hadn't thought of glue, I'll have to give that a try.
