What are everyone's thought on buying a laptop with a 1tb hard drive vs one with a 256gb solid state drive? The two laptops are identical in specs but I have the choice getting it with a hdd vs ssd, the ssd costs $100 more. I will be mainly using adobe Lightroom for photo editing. Specs- as us amd-a9, 8gb ram, 1080p full hd display. Is the ssd worth the extra $100? I don't need the extra storage, I can always buy an external hard drive. Will the ssd make the laptop run faster? Thoughts? Thanks!

SSD, without question. If you find you need more space, buy and extra 1TB for $60 or 4TB for $100 later on. An internal SSD will be at least five times faster than the HDD. Operating systems are being optimized for solid state media, as it will be the standard in the very near future.

SSD, without question. If you find you need more space, buy and extra 1TB for $60 or 4TB for $100 later on. An internal SSD will be at least five times faster than the HDD. Operating systems are being optimized for solid sate of media, as it will be the standard in the very near future.

Also:

HDD is the most unreliable failure-prone part of a laptop. SSD has no moving parts -- very reliable.

SSD consumes less power (= battery life).

I agree with all your responders below. SSD is a no brainer. Every tablet and mobile phone out there uses this technology. The only reason mechanical HDDs are still used in laptops is they are cheaper per MB than SSDs but the extra speed is worth it. I build all my own desktops and use an SSD (usually 256GB) for the OS and a variety of HDDs for storage. If there's a choice of HDD or SSD in a portable device, go for the SSD everytime.

Yes.

Generally speaking, the most cost-effective and high performance solution for people with the need for a lot of storage is to buy an SSD sized to hold the OS and all your programs and use that for the system drive, and to buy a hard drive for bulk storage. Therefore it's a good idea to look for a laptop that has room for both.

SSD, no question. Years ago I swapped out the HD for a SSD in a new laptop for the first time. The improvement blew me away. I'll never own a computer without a SSD ever again. I immediately put a 1 TB SSD in my desktop and never looked back.

A SSD is faster, quieter, cooler, uses less power and is more resistant to impact. 'nuf said.
 
The SSD will give you a faster and smoother work flow. You can always get an external drive to backup and store your data on it. I use a 4TB external drive even though I have a 1TB SSD drive on the laptop.
 
Go for the SSD which is far faster. Work out the costs. It may be cheaper to buy the laptop with the HDD & buy the SSD separately. Then swap the HDD for a SSD and put the HDD in a cheap SATA/USB caddy to use as an external backup drive.

I was able to find an Acer notebook with near identical specs. to the Asus mentioned, but it included a 128Gb SSD and a 2Tb HDD. I'm intending to use the Acer for Office applications and the Web, and I feel that that it might be a bit slow for really satisfactory LR performance.

SSD is much faster but remember to use a backup on a mechanic HD like 3½".

SSD as USB or SD memory can die one day and if they do it is 100%.

A mechanic HD will die in an other way- first boot sector and later the rest.

If the boot-sector is dead you still can use it as you can boot on another disk.

No, SSD does not make laptop run faster. If you are planning to sleep your laptop then not in use it would not make any difference if you have HD or SSD because waking up from the sleep is a lot faster than booting. Also, software load faster after initial run. That said if you are going to shut down your laptop all the time and especially carrying your laptop in the bag get SSD. A lot safer. Regardless what you decide get max amount of memory because it helps with the speed. Your software will not have to page to the HD/SSD if there is enough memory.

That's usually the case but my boot ssd failed after two years. HDD still going strong.

HDD access time: 9 to 12 mSec.

Open the Resource Monitor, click on the Disk tab and see all of the "Processes with Disk Activity".

Running all the time, regardless of how much memory you have and how fast your processor is.

Chris, we already discussed this before ad nauseum. It doesn't matter how fast SSD is if it is only used for a very short period of time. Every month I clone my laptop's SSD to a HD and run my laptop from HD for about a week. This HD came with the laptop and I insert it in to external usb adapter to clone. Then I put it in to my laptop. I see absolutely no difference in performance. I never shutdown my laptop (sleep mode) and most of the time I carry it in my backpack on the job to be able to process pictures after the shoot and send them to my stock company. So no matter what anyone say I know in real life SSD does not speed up any computer.
