I got lost in the excitement of the G9 announcement and paid almost no attention to the new lens announcement with a 1.4x teleconverter included. After I finally read the lens announcement this morning, I saw the teleconverter was a separate piece of equipment and not part of the lens, as Canon did with one of its lenses, I think. I looked at B&H and saw that indeed the DMW-TC14 1.4x Teleconverter is a item to be ordered separately from the 200 mm. I immediately got excited for this teleconverter and imagined it on other pany lenses. But as I read through the write-up, it appears that this teleconverter only works on the new 200 mm lens. Do I have that correct? And if so, why would Panasonic make a teleconverter that only works on one lens?

Yes.

It is physically impossible to use it with other lenses, because it protrudes and requires the lens to have space to accommodate it.
And if so, why would Panasonic make a teleconverter that only works on one lens?
Yes they would. They did it for just one lens.

But then, there could be more compatible lenses coming in the future.

Thanks so much!

Not sure where you're getting that idea???

The TC comes with the 200mm F2.8 as a bundle, but it can also be bought separately - let's say you drop your tc somewhere and need another one - so a good and customer friendly thing (but costs some cash anyway)

There is (or will be) a 2xTC coming. Also only for 200 F2.8 lens so far.

Yes, at this point they only work with the 200mm F2.8. Maybe also with the Oly 40-150F2.8 and 300mm F4, but nobody has confirmed that yet.

Panasonic may have some plans to release some other long lenses later? Anyway, the 200mm F2,8 competes directly against the Oly 300mm F4 and TC14 with these converters: TC14x making a 280mm F4 and TC2x a 400mm F5.6 - pretty close what you have with 300mm F4 and the Oly TC14, making a 420mm F5.6.

Reviews and early adopters will tell the IQ and other aspects soon - and I believe it is a very good lens. What will happen with the TC2x... The 300mm F4 seem to work fine with the TC. But, if that 2x could be added to the Oly 300mm...

It seems reasonable Panny will eventually make more TC-compatible lenses, which will all need physical space behind the rear element for the protruding TC front element plus the extra pair of contacts.

Looming question alert: Cross-compatibility between Oly and Panny lenses and TCs. Both use what appear to be the same connector schemes but the Panny TCs seems to have a small lump that may prevent mounting on an Oly lens. We shall see.

Cheers,

Rick

It would be nice if Pany designed teleconverters to go with their current lenses, such as the 100-400. It would be great to have a tc for that, like I do for my Canon 100-400.

Agreed. The 4/3 TCs work with any 4/3 lens in theory since they all fit across the whole lineups. The short M4/3 registration distance probably makes this impossible as it seems all three TCs protrude in front of the mount and few lenses have the space to accommodate them.

I have to believe Panny has plans for their two TCs beyond just the 200. Time will tell.

Cheers,

Rick

What the heck are you on about ?? Did you read the post at all. Gees.

Danny.

My Tamron 150-600 came with a 1.4x Teleconvertor that at the time only worked with that lens. It now works with other Tamron lenses (Not that I have any of those). However I guess a converter has to start somewhere. So this is not such a big deal.

Chill out. You are analysing things far too deep. It's only a hobby for most of us.

As a side note, the PL50-200 should be out relatively soon. It is f/4 at the long end so it might also accommodate the new TC.

I disagree. The lens would be far too slow with even the1.4x converter. Something like f7 even at the 100mm end. Lenses in the f2.8 to f4 range would lend themselves well to teleconveters. Anything above that in m43 would be pointless.

I did a little mental excercise calculating what other lenses FL and F number would be with a 1.4X TC.

I came up with only a few interesting combinations:
  • 35-100 /2.8 --> 50-140 F/4
  • 25/1.4 --> 35 F/2
The rest are rather pointless, either too slow or the FL range is already covered by a decent lens that is not too expensive.

I have been wondering if the 1.4X will operate on the Leica DG 50-200mm f/2.8-4.0, as a 70-280mm f/4.0-5.6. It could be a nifty setup.

no way is the 1.4 t/c going to work with the 100-400mm and by the looks of it not compatible with oly t/c compatible lenses the panasonic t/c has a extra pin which kind of means it will work with just the 200mm f2.8 at the moment but great news for future lenses for m43 perhaps the 50-200mm will accommodate the t/c ,
